Application And Implications Of Rule-Based Pruning Of Apple Trees, Jacob B. Franzen
Open Access Theses
Labor is one of the largest operating costs associated with tree fruit production in the United States. Pruning and harvest can easily eclipse over a quarter of an orchard's operating budget. Additionally, labor sources are becoming increasingly difficult to find while worker pay keeps going up. As a result, it appears that labor costs will continue to rise for the foreseeable future. Work on developing mechanized alternatives to pruning is seen as one of the key areas to reduce an orchard's dependence on human labor. The objective of this study was to test a set of simplified pruning rules (RUL), …

Growth Parameters Of 'Golden Delicious' Apple Trees (Malus X Domestica Borkh), Biying Shi
Open Access Theses
High yield and high quality of tree fruit result from appropriate orchard design and management practices. This requires an accurate knowledge of vegetative growth, branching, and flowering processes of fruit trees. Tree development knowledge is the fundamental information necessary to build functional-structural tree models, which have various applications in agriculture. To build such models, information is needed on the distributions of growth parameters, not merely means as are often reported. The objective of this study was to quantitatively analyze shoot development and examine the correlations between fruit quality and light distribution in apple trees. This study was conducted in 2014, …

Jurnal Kultivasi

Tan spot and Stagonospora nodorum blotch (SNB), often occurring together, are two economically significant diseases of wheat in the Northern Great Plains of the United States. They are caused by the fungi Pyrenophora tritici-repentis and Parastagonospora nodorum, respectively, both of which produce multiple necrotrophic effectors (NE) to cause disease. In this work, 120 hard red winter wheat (HRWW) cultivars or elite lines, mostly from the United States, were evaluated in the greenhouse for their reactions to the two diseases as well as NE produced by the two pathogens. One P. nodorum isolate (Sn4) and four Pyrenophora tritici-repentis isolates (Pti2, …

Evaluation Of Disinfectants To Prevent Mechanical Transmission Of Viruses And A Viroid In Greenhouse Tomato Production, Rugang Li, Fulya Baysal-Gurel, Zaid Abdo, Sally A. Miller, Kai-Shu Ling
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Background
In recent years, a number of serious disease outbreaks caused by viruses and viroids on greenhouse tomatoes in North America have resulted in significant economic losses to growers. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of commercial disinfectants against mechanical transmission of these pathogens, and to select disinfectants with broad spectrum reactivity to control general virus and viroid diseases in greenhouse tomato production.
Methods
A total of 16 disinfectants were evaluated against Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV), Potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd), Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV), and Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). The efficacy of each disinfectant to …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are ~21 nucleotide (nt), endogenous RNAs that regulate gene expression in plants. Increasing evidence suggests that miRNAs play an important role in species-specific development in plants. However, the detailed miRNA profile divergence has not been performed among tomato species. In this study, the small RNA (sRNA) profiles of Solanum lycopersicum cultivar 9706 and Solanum habrochaites species PI 134417 were obtained by deep sequencing. Sixty-three known miRNA families were identified from these two species, of which 39 were common. Further miRNA profile comparison showed that 24 known non-conserved miRNA families were species-specific between these two tomato species. In addition, …

Horticulture research reports
The Carnarvon Horticulture District is located along the fertile delta of the Gascoyne River. This irrigated area is one of the most productive in Western Australia for horticulture, producing a wide variety of fruit and vegetable crops including but not limited to bananas, table grapes, mangoes, melons, tomatoes, capsicums & green beans. The majority of Carnarvon's vegetable production occurs during the winter months where sunlight & temperature in Carnarvon is favourable for vegetable production.
This report shows detailed statistics for the horticultural produce of Carnarvon in 2014.

Review Of A Garden Of Marvels: How We Discovered That Flowers Have Sex, Leaves Eat Air, And Other Secrets Of Plants, By Ruth Kassinger, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.
Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications
Until I read Kassinger’s book I clearly did not have the historical perspective necessary to appreciate the incredible lives of plants and how botanists have come to their present understandings of same. Kassinger, a gardener by avocation, cut out most of the jargon, defined terms that she does use, and wrote simple and compelling tales of the histories of discoveries about the various parts of plants and how those parts work together for the benefit of the plant and, ultimately, for our benefit.
[This] is a book that any gardener or other interested person with a modest background in plant …

The Effects Of Slow-Release Aluminum Sulfate On Bloom Color Of Hydrangea Macrophylla, Patrick James Edziak
Horticulture and Crop Science
Hydrangea macrophylla is a common greenhouse crop typically produced for the late winter and spring holidays. Most varieties are capable of producing either pink or blue flowers depending on aluminum content and pH of the growing medium. The goal of this experiment was to examine the effects of new controlled-release aluminum sulfate products on bloom color. This new product was applied as a topdress and a pre-plant incorporated mix using two different manufacturer recommended rates. Results were directly compared with those produced using a traditional water-soluble aluminum sulfate drench application. Controlled release aluminum sulfate was found to be at least …
