Lempoyang (Zingiber zerumbet Smith.) is an important plant which has been propagated because of its medicinal values. Lempoyang is widely used as a folk medicine in Asian countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, India and Taiwan. Zerumbone, a cyclic sesqueterpene found to be the major and main bioactive compound that gives great potential in medicinal purposes especially in the treatment of chronic diseases based on recent reports. Impact Of Soil Drought Stress On Photochemical Efficiency Of Photosystem Ii And Antioxidant Enzyme Activities Of Phaseolus Vulgaris Cultivars, Rabi̇ye Terzi̇, Aykut Sağlam, Ni̇hal Kutlu, Hati̇ce Nar, Asim Kadioğlu

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars (cvs) (Göynük 98, Karacaşehir 90, Şehirali 90, ES 855, and Yunus 90) were subjected to drought stress in order to assess the levels of drought tolerance through the analysis of growth parameters, leaf water potential (\psi_{leaf}), stomatal conductance (g_s), chlorophyll (chl) content, and lipid peroxidation. Significant differences were recorded among cultivars in most traits. Yunus 90 was identified as the most tolerant, and Karacaşehir 90 was the most sensitive. Furthermore, the changes in antioxidant enzyme activities, H_2O_2 content, and Photosystem II were investigated under drought stress, where Antioxidant enzyme activities increased while H_2O_2 contents …

High Frequency Plant Production Via Shoot Organogenesis And Somatic Embryogenesis From Callus In Tylophora Indica, An Endangered Plant Species, Aastha Sahai, Anwar Shahzad, Mohammad Anis

An efficient and reproducible protocol has been developed for the in vitro production of an endangered medicinal climber Tylophora indica (Burm.f.) Merr. via leaf explants. Different types of calli produced on benzyladenine (BA) and thidiazuron (TDZ) supplemented Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium were selected for shoot induction and somatic embryogenesis studies. Calli when transferred from BA (5 µM) and TDZ (2.5 µM) to MS medium containing BA (5 µM) resulted in high frequency shoot induction (26.8 ± 0.97 shoots/culture) along with somatic embryogenesis (10.20 ± 0.37 embryoids/culture) up to 3 subculture passages. Enhanced Adventitious Shoot Regeneration From Aerial Stem Explants Of Ginger Using Tdz And Its Histological Studies, Adinkudikuyyal Lincy, Bhaskaran Sasikumar

A protocol for direct plantlet regeneration from aerial stem explants of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) has been developed. Adventitious shoots and roots were regenerated from in planta aerial stem explants of 2 ginger varieties viz. var. 'Jamaica' and var. 'Varada'. Maximum shoot and root regeneration were observed in the cultures containing TDZ and IBA (1:1; 1:0.1 mg L-1) in both varieties. Cultures containing TDZ alone showed poor shoot and root formation. The Genotoxic Potential Of Two Heavy Metals In Inbred Lines Of Maize (Zea Mays L.), Girjesh Kumar, Prashant Kumar Rai

The genotoxic effects of 2 heavy metals (mercury chloride and cadmium chloride) on the gametic cells of 6 inbred lines of maize were tested in terms of cytological abnormalities. Meiosis was normal under control conditions. During the treatments with mercury and cadmium there was a concentration-dependent increase in meiotic abnormalities in all the inbred lines. A wide spectrum of chromosomal aberrations in the treated sets was stickiness, followed by laggards, bridges, scattering, precocious movement, fragments, etc. Maximum chromosomal anomalies were observed in inbred line CM-142 in both the treatment sets of heavy metals. Scorzonera ketzkhovelii Grossh. (Asteraceae) was recently collected from Yusufeli, Artvin (north-east Anatolia) and it has been reported as a new species record for the flora of Turkey. It is described and illustrated. In addition, its karyological features and pollen morphology are given.

The Lower Cheliff plain is among the largest salted soils in north-western Algeria. In order to establish the relationships between the main soil factors and plant species in this stressed ecosystem, 133 relevés related to soil and vegetation were realized. Soil variables measured included electrical conductivity and calcium carbonate. The 133 relevés were arranged in clusters using k-means classification. The similarity analysis used to examine the variation in vegetation assemblage structure showed significant differences in taxonomical composition among groups of relevés. A New Subspecies Of Stachys Cretica (Section Eriostomum, Lamiaceae) From Turkey, Ekrem Akçi̇çek

Stachys cretica L. subsp. kutahyensis Akçiçek subsp. nova is described as a new subspecies from West Anatolia, Turkey. It is related to Stachys cretica L. subsp. vacillans Rech. f. and Stachys cretica L. subsp. anatolica Rech. f., from which it differs in stem, leaf, and flower characters. Diagnostic characters, description, detailed illustrations, and taxonomic comments of the new subspecies are given. The geographical distribution of the subspecies is mapped. IUCN threat category and observations on the population are noted.

As an initial part of a revisional study based on the genus Salvia L. (Lamiaceae), extensive field studies, herbarium and literature surveys, and multivariate analysis have been conducted on the basis of the Salvia euphratica sensu lato (S. cerino-pruinosa, S. euphratica, S. leiocalycina, and S. pseudeuphratica) and its closely related species (S. kronenburgii and S. sericeo-tomentosa) in order to understand their taxonomic status. This study was conducted to investigate foliar nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics, nitrogen and phosphorus resorption, and some leaf traits (i.e. SLA=specific leaf area) in some coastal salt marsh plants located in northern Turkey. The study area is located on the east bank of the Kızılırmak River in the central Black Sea Region. There were statistically significant differences among months (from June to October) in terms of SLA in all species except for Artemisia santonicum. Macrofungi specimens were collected from different localities in Derebucak district (Konya province) between 2005 and 2007, particularly during the autumn and spring. As a result 134 species were identified. Thirteen of them belong to Ascomycota, and the other 121 belong to the division Basidiomycota. According to the present literature about the macrofungi of Turkey, 6 taxa are new records for Turkey. These are Lachnellula calyciformis (Willd.) Dharne of the division Ascomycota, and Hebeloma stenocystis J.Favre, Cortinarius calochrous var. coniferarum (M.M.Moser) Nezdojm., Cortinarius cupreorufus Brandrud, Inocybe ayeri Furrer-Ziogas, and Calocera pallidospathulata D.A.Reid of the division Basidiomycota.

To help in the clarification of the taxonomic status of Elymus L. and related genera Agropyron Gaertn., Leymus Hochst., Hordelymus (Jess.) Harz, and Brachypodium P.Beauv., the sequence diversity in the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA was studied. ITS data of 64 Triticeae accessions including 40 Elymus, 12 Agropyron, 7 Leymus, and 4 Hordelymus, and 1 Brachypodium as an out-group were analysed. The molecular diversity statistics indicated that the most diverse genus is Elymus among the studied genera. Invasive plant species are widely recognized as a major threat to biodiversity and ecosystem stability. Wetland ecosystems tend to be much more susceptible to invasions because of their location on the landscape where water, nutrients, and the impacts of disturbances accumulate.
