Biomass Yield Of Switchgrass Cultivars Under High- Versus Low-Input Conditions, Michael D. Casler, Sergio Sosa, Lindsey Hoffman, Hilary Mayton, Calvin Ernst, Paul R. Adler, Arvid R. Boe, Stacy A. Bonos

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is undergoing development as a biomass crop to support conversion of cellulosic biomass to energy. To avoid the competition of biomass with food or feed crops, most commercialization proposals suggest that switchgrass should be grown exclusively on marginal lands that are not fit for food or feed production. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential for cultivar x environment interactions that would affect the methods and approaches for breeding and evaluating switchgrass cultivars, including both upland and lowland types, for high-input versus low-input types of environments. Biomass yield was measured on 14 cultivars …

Assessing Anther Extrusion And Its Effect On Us Hard Winter Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Hybrid Seed Production, Nicholas Garst 2017 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Assessing Anther Extrusion And Its Effect On Us Hard Winter Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Hybrid Seed Production, Nicholas Garst

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The promise of higher grain yields as a result of the development and production of hybrid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) has not been fully realized primarily due to the high cost of seed production. Anther extrusion is a key trait that improves pollen availability, and thus, is expected to enhance hybrid wheat seed production yields. Hard winter wheat germplasm adapted to the US Great Plains was visually assessed for anther extrusion in the field and greenhouse environments. Significant genotypic differences were detected and high broad-sense heritability was calculated (ranging from 0.62 to 0.85) for anther extrusion in the field. …

Volunteer Corn (Zea Mays) Interference In Dry Edible Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris), Gustavo M. Sbatella, Andrew R. Kniss, Emmanuel C. Omondi, Robert G. Wilson

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Volunteer corn can affect dry bean by reducing yields; expanding the life cycle of insects, mites, and pathogens; interfering with harvest; and contaminating bean seed. Field studies were conducted at Lingle, WY, and Scottsbluff, NE, to determine the relationship between volunteer corn density and dry bean yield, establish the proper time of volunteer corn removal, and determine whether dry bean yield was affected by the method used to remove volunteer corn. Volunteer corn reduced dry bean yields, as recorded in other crops. Growing conditions for each location were different, as indicated by the accumulated growing degree days (GDD): Lingle 2008 …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Soya bean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is sought after for both its oil and protein components. Genetic approaches to add value to either component are ongoing efforts in soya bean breeding and molecular biology programmes. The former is the primary vegetable oil consumed in the world. Hence, its primary usage is in direct human consumption. As a means to increase its utility in feed applications, thereby expanding the market of soya bean coproducts, we investigated the simultaneous displacement of marine ingredients in aquafeeds with soya bean-based protein and a high Omega-3 fatty acid soya bean oil, enriched with alpha-linolenic …

Arkansas Soybean Research Studies 2015, Jeremy Ross

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

Arkansas is the leading soybean-producing state in the mid-southern United States. Arkansas ranked 10th in soybean production in 2015 when compared to the other soybean-producing states in the U.S. The state represents 4.0% of the total U.S. soybean production and 3.7% of the total acres planted to soybean in 2015. The 2015 state soybean average was 49 bushels per acres, 0.5 bushel per acres less than the state record soybean yield set in 2014 (Table 1). The top five soybean-producing counties in 2015 were Mississippi, Desha, Poinsett, Phillips, and Arkansas Counties. These five counties accounted for 35% of soybean production …

Effect Of Phytosanitary Irradiation On The Quality Of Two Varieties Of Pummelos (Citrus Maxima (Burm.) Merr.), A. Jain, J. Ornelas-Paz, D. Obenland, K. Rodriguez (Friscia), Anuradha Prakash 2017 Chapman University

Effect Of Phytosanitary Irradiation On The Quality Of Two Varieties Of Pummelos (Citrus Maxima (Burm.) Merr.), A. Jain, J. Ornelas-Paz, D. Obenland, K. Rodriguez (Friscia), Anuradha Prakash

Food Science Faculty Articles and Research

Phytosanitary treatments prevent the introduction of pests such as fruit flies into pest free zones, and are often required for international trade. Irradiation is increasingly being considered as an alternative to cold and chemical phytosanitary treatments, such as methyl bromide. In this study, the effect of low dose gamma irradiation on the post-harvest quality of two varieties of pummelos (Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.), an emerging crop of interest in the US was evaluated. Two varieties of pummelos grown in California were irradiated at the phytosanitary target dose of 150 Gy and a higher dose of 1000 Gy to exaggerate …

Corn Residue Use By Livestock In The United States, Marty R. Schmer, Rachael M. Brown, Virginia L. Jin, Robert B. Mitchell, Daren D. Redfearn

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Corn (Zea mays L.) residue grazing or harvest provides a simple and economical practice to integrate crops and livestock, but limited information is available on how widespread corn residue utilization is practiced by US producers. In 2010, the USDA Economic Research Service surveyed producers from 19 states on corn grain and residue management practices. Total corn residue grazed or harvested was 4.87 million ha. Approximately 4.06 million ha was grazed by 11.7 million livestock (primarily cattle) in 2010. The majority of grazed corn residue occurred in Nebraska (1.91 million ha), Iowa (385,000 ha), South Dakota (361,000 ha), and Kansas …

A Comprehensive Image-Based Phenomic Analysis Reveals The Complex Genetic Architecture Of Shoot Growth Dynamics In Rice (Oryza Sativa), Malachy T. Campbell, Qian Du, Kan Liu, Chris J. Brien, Bettina Berger, Chi Zhang, Harkamal Walia 2017 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

A Comprehensive Image-Based Phenomic Analysis Reveals The Complex Genetic Architecture Of Shoot Growth Dynamics In Rice (Oryza Sativa), Malachy T. Campbell, Qian Du, Kan Liu, Chris J. Brien, Bettina Berger, Chi Zhang, Harkamal Walia

Agronomy & Horticulture -- Faculty Publications

Early vigor is an important trait for many rice (Oryza sativa L.)- growing environments. However, genetic characterization and improvement for early vigor is hindered by the temporal nature of the trait and strong genotype × environment effects. We explored the genetic architecture of shoot growth dynamics during the early and active tillering stages by applying a functional modeling and genomewide association (GWAS) mapping approach on a diversity panel of ~360 rice accessions. Multiple loci with small effects on shoot growth trajectory were identified, indicating a complex polygenic architecture. Natural variation for shoot growth dynamics was assessed in a subset …

Evaluating Adaptions Of Soft Red Winter Wheat In Eastern Region Of Usa, Dilmini Alahakoon, Anne Fennell, Jixiang Wu 2017 South Dakota State University

Evaluating Adaptions Of Soft Red Winter Wheat In Eastern Region Of Usa, Dilmini Alahakoon, Anne Fennell, Jixiang Wu

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Identification of winter wheat genotypes that are highly adapted to a wide range of environmental conditions is one of the most important wheat research objectives. Multienvironment trials (METs) under diverse environments is a commonly used practice to evaluate mean performance and yield stability. However, locations used and genotypes planted may vary from year to year which may cause yield stability analysis to be statistically challenging. In this study, we evaluated yield trial data containing 117 eastern soft red winter wheat genotypes that were grown in 35 locations in eastern production areas and four growing seasons (2012/2013 to 2015/2016). We used …

Carbon Stocks In Shade Coffee: Strategies For Enhancing Carbon Storage In Smallholder Systems In Jinotega, Nicaragua, Vanessa Katheryn Kichline 2017 Bard College

Carbon Stocks In Shade Coffee: Strategies For Enhancing Carbon Storage In Smallholder Systems In Jinotega, Nicaragua, Vanessa Katheryn Kichline

Bard Center for Environmental Policy

Climate change has recently shifted focus to adaptation and mitigation strategies in coffee production. Shade coffee systems, already widely recognized for their contribution to biodiversity and soil conservation, are now drawing attention for their role in carbon storage. Researchers have generally assumed that high carbon storage must come at the expense of reduced crop yields, implying that farmers must choose between sustainability and profit. This study uses field inventories of 70 farms in Jinotega, Nicaragua to estimate this tradeoff in smallholder shade coffee systems. Field inventories were used to develop three typologies representing different shade management strategies in use in …
