Biomass Partitioning In Grasses Subjected To Defoliation, M Gutman, I Noy-Meir, D Pluda, S Rothman

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Containerized plants of Perennial wild barley (Hordeum bulbosum) grown from corms and of Wild emmer wheat (Tritium diccocoides) grown from seeds, were grown in environmental conditions comparable to those encountered under field conditions. Both species were subjected to 3 defoliation frequencies ( once, twice and three times during the season) each at 3 different clipping heights (1, 2.5 and 5 cm above ground level ) plus a control treatment (10 treatments in all). Wild emmer wheat control plants had significantly higher cumulative total and reproductive biomass over all harvests than all clipped plants. Clipping height and …

Salt Tolerance In Herbage And Its Application To Greening The Desert, Y Maeda, T Otani, K Ogiwara, S Murai, H Takenaga

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Canadian peat moss was used as water holding material and the efficacy of mixing the peat with the sand on water holding capacity of the sand, and the adaptability of alfalfa (AL), burmudagrass (BG), bahiagrass(BH), weeping lovegrass (WL) and Japanese lawngrass(JL) to dry and saline conditions were investigated. Without mixing peat, pF value of the sand did not change for 6 days after watering, but rose markedly up to 2.9 after 18 days. With mixing peat at the rate of 2% by the sand weight, the value did not change for 20 days, and rose gradually up to 2.5 on …

Some Improvable Points For Better Utilization Of Reed Canarygrass Cultivars In Japan, T Otani, M Ito, Y Maeda, Y Kurihara 2024 Tokyo University of Agriculture

Some Improvable Points For Better Utilization Of Reed Canarygrass Cultivars In Japan, T Otani, M Ito, Y Maeda, Y Kurihara

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Relationships among growth stage, herbage quality, and dry matter accumulation of reed canarygrass cultivars were investigated in a rainy mountainous district of Japan. Fiber content accumulated during the primary growth correlated with some growth characters of this grass, especially with preferential culm expansion, so that total amount of cell wall constituents reached a remarkably high level about the time when culm/foliage (C/F) ratio in dry matter was elevated above 1.5. In aftermaths, whose early regrowth went on rather quickly, dry matter accumulation began to decline at the stage that C/F ratio of standing crop became ca. 1.0 and fiber content …

Multiple Land Use Management: Case Studies On Building Partnerships, Greg Riemer, Tom Harrison

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

As part of the Saskatchewan commitment to the North American Waterfowl Management Plan the Saskatchewan Wetland Conservation Corporation (SWCC) is acquiring over 30,000 acres of native vegetation in a contiguous block around the Big Quill Lake in east central Saskatchewan. Some of this range land was in extremely poor condition. This lake is of internationally significant importance to waterfowl, nesting and migrating shorebirds. SWCC goals for this area are to improve the condition and vigour of the range for livestock and to provide and protect habitat for wildlife such as Baird's sparrow and piping plovers. Big Quill Lake is a …

Yield Formation And Changes In Quality In Legume-Grass Mixtures As Affected By N-Fertilization, Irrigation And Grass Species, K Richter, K Schmaler 2024 Humboldt-University Berlin

Yield Formation And Changes In Quality In Legume-Grass Mixtures As Affected By N-Fertilization, Irrigation And Grass Species, K Richter, K Schmaler

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In the years of 1984 to 1992 field experiments have been conducted with different legume-grass mixtures at a location in north-east Germany. Dry matter yield, crude protein and crude fibre content in legume-grass mixtures changed by N-fertilization, grass species, duration of utilization and irrigation. First this was caused by the effect of these factors on yield proportion. The variation of N-fertilization and irrigation influenced red clover grown in a mixture with grass more than lucerne-grass mixture. Irrigation of red clover-grass mixture supported the yield proportion of legume whereas N-fertilization and duration of utilization supported the grass species. Yield proportion, crude …

Some Ecological Aspects Of Semi-Natural And Temporary Grasslands, N Gaborcik, L Ondrasek, J Cunderlik, J Tomaskin, T Kizek 2024 Grassland and Mountain Agriculture Research Institute, Mládeznícka

Some Ecological Aspects Of Semi-Natural And Temporary Grasslands, N Gaborcik, L Ondrasek, J Cunderlik, J Tomaskin, T Kizek

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Some ecological aspects were studied in semi-natural and temporary grasslands at different levels of fertilizer application. The research was carried out in the upland region of central Slovakia at the altitude of 460 m in Banská Bystrica. At zero fertilizer application, soil CO2 production and Cox content were higher in the temporary grassland. Atmospheric N fixation was also higher in the temporary grassland. However, root accumulation, microbial biomass content and R : S ratio were lower in the temporary grassland. By comparison with the semi-natural grassland, leaf area index (LAI), net assimilation rate (NAR) and crop growth rate (CGR) were …

The Productivity And Botanical Composition Of Permanent, Temporary And Slot Seeded Grassland, J Fiala, J Gaisler, V Pavlu

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The development of botanical composition and primary production was followed from 1993 to 1995 at the southern side of the Jizera Mountains on three-cutting permanent, temporary and slot seeded grassland. Each grassland type was divided into 4 variants with various doses of mineral fertilization. The same clover-grass mixture composed of 5 components were used for the renovation by ploughing and slot seeding. During three years of the observation a very fast drop of the clover portion for the benefit of grass species and herbs was noted especially by the renewed grassland. Also sown grass species in the renewed grassland declined …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In our four-year research, (Galega orientalis Lam.) Var. “GALE” grown in the region of North Backa, FR Yugoslavia, gave a considerably higher yield in green mass, hay, crude protein content, crude fat content, ash and dry matter contents, compared to control plant (average of the 1991/96 trials). During hay stacking, leaves did not fall off, which is a very favorable property.

Effect Of Clipping Frequency Of Some Fodder Grasses In The Semi-Arid Region Of Tamil Nadu, India, K Manoharan, K Paliwal 2024 Madurai Kamaraj University

Effect Of Clipping Frequency Of Some Fodder Grasses In The Semi-Arid Region Of Tamil Nadu, India, K Manoharan, K Paliwal

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Clipping frequency and water stress play a major role in the biomass production of grasses. Bajra - Napier BN2 and CO1 showed maximum above ground biomass under monthly clipping without water stress. The above ground biomass of Bajra-Napier BN2, Panicum maximum Hamil and Guinea grass were not affected under weekly and fortnightly clipping with water stress. Water stress affected the monthly clipped and unclipped plant above ground biomass but the below ground biomass increased in all the fodder grasses except Brachiaria mutica.

Biological, Productive And Qualitative Evaluation Of Permanent Meadows In Southern Italy, M Maiorana, G Convertini, V Rizzo, M Stelluti

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In the four-year period 1992-95 the biological and productive capabilities of two pure permanent meadow species, sainfoin (Onobrychis viciaefolia Scop.) and cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.), subjected to three harvest times (when plant height reached 10, 15 and 20 cm) and two cutting heights (0 and 5 cm) were tested under dry conditions. Sainfoin adapted better to environmental conditions than cocksfoot and proved to perform better in terms of number of annual cuttings, green forage and dry matter production and persistence throughout the years. Among the harvest times and cutting heights, the best responses were obtained, respectively, in the …

Parental Dominance Or Tolerance In Lucerne, M C. Campbell, P S. Cocks 2024 University of Western Australia

Parental Dominance Or Tolerance In Lucerne, M C. Campbell, P S. Cocks

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Lucerne (Medicago sativa) was sown at increasing distances from isolated adult plants along 4 radials 0.5 m long, to evaluate possible influences of the parent plant on seed germination and seedling survival. Time of sowing was also considered with radials 3 & 4 being sown in May and radials 1 & 2 being sown four weeks later. Two cultivars were used in the 1995 experiment; Hunterfield, a winter active cultivar and P545, a winter dormant cultivar. The results indicate that seeds as close as 2.5 cm to established plants could germinate, survive and become established. Observations suggested that …

Effects Of Grazing Frequency And Soil Water Supply On Basal Cover Of Four Perennial Grasses, A J. Bowcher, J M. Virgona 2024 NSW Agriculture

Effects Of Grazing Frequency And Soil Water Supply On Basal Cover Of Four Perennial Grasses, A J. Bowcher, J M. Virgona

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Changes in basal area and soil water extraction were examined in four perennial grasses, Phalaris aquatica cv. Sirosa, Dactylis glomerata cv. Porto, Festuca arundinacea cv. Demeter and Danthonia richardsonii cv. Tarana. Treatments were factorially arranged with four species, three different grazing intervals (2-, 5- and 8- weeks) and two watering regimes (rainfed and supplementary water)and were imposed from early spring to mid-autumn in 1994/5 and 1995/6. In 1994/5, the basal area of all species declined except for the native, D. richardsonii under rainfed and watered conditions. The grazing treatments had no effect on changes in basal area in this …

Evaluation Of Grass Species In Pure Cultures And In Mixture With White Clover, M Zimkova 2024 Grassland and Mountain Agriculture Research Institute

Evaluation Of Grass Species In Pure Cultures And In Mixture With White Clover, M Zimkova

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Four cultivars of three grass species and five grass/white clover mixtures were evaluated in field small-plot trials on persistence and dry matter production (DM) in 1993-95. Of pure grass species the meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) was the most productive though its persistence has declined in the third year (3.2 points in 1995). Both perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)/white clover (Trifolium repens) mixtures have been well performing with 1.3 - 2.4 points for persistence and with yields of 6.4 - 9.56 t DM/ha-1.

Cutting Date Effects Of Yield And Quality Of Unimproved Kudzu (Pueraria Lobata (Willd.) Ohwi.), T H. Terrill, S Gelaye, S Mahotiere, E A. Amoah, S Miller, W R. Windham

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Kudzu (Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi.), a vigorous, perennial warmseason legume, is considered a weed in the southern United States. It is tolerant of drought and low soil fertility and has potential as a low-input forage for livestock production. A field experiment tested effects of cutting date on yield and nutritive value of an unimproved stand of kudzu (10-15 yr old) in central Georgia. Yield measurements were made in June, July, September, and November, 1994, with forage samples taken to determine quality parameters. Soil fertility was unaffected by cutting treatment. Whole plant and leaf dry matter (DM) production and crude …

Long Term Weed Management Effects In Alfalfa, Randy Dovel, Mylen Bohle 2024 Oregon State University

Long Term Weed Management Effects In Alfalfa, Randy Dovel, Mylen Bohle

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Five herbicide treatment regimes were applied to spring and fall seeded alfalfa from 1991 to 1995 at two locations, Klamath Falls and Powell Butte, Oregon. Treatments were evaluated by measuring alfalfa crown and weed stand counts, yield, weed content and forage quality of all cuttings each year. Weed control treatment did not affect hay yield at Klamath Falls. Severe weed competition in 1991 caused lower yields in untreated plots in 1992 at Powell Butte. Weed growth was most pronounced in the first cutting at both sites. The presence of weeds did not adversely affect forage quality in any cutting except …

Productivity Of Renovated Naturalized Pastures In Atlantic Canada, Y A. Papadopoulos, E Charmley, R C. Martin, A H. Fredeen, K B. McRae, D Mason, S.A E. Fillmore 2024 Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

Productivity Of Renovated Naturalized Pastures In Atlantic Canada, Y A. Papadopoulos, E Charmley, R C. Martin, A H. Fredeen, K B. Mcrae, D Mason, S.A E. Fillmore

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and improved productivity of reduced tillage pasture renovation methods in the establishment of triple species pasture mixtures into an existing naturalized stand. Experimental treatments, 2 (low and high stocking rates) by 2 (frost- and sod-seeding methods) factorial with an additional non-renovated pasture control treatment, were arranged in a randomized complete block design with two replications. Despite the fact that high stocking rates resulted in reduced herbage yield, animal production per hectare was substantially improved in the establishment and the first postestablishment year. Sod-seeding was the most effective establishment method …

Effects Of Method Of Renovation And Rate Of Nitrogen On Naturalized Pastures In Atlantic Canada, H T. Kunelius, M R. Carter 2024 Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

Effects Of Method Of Renovation And Rate Of Nitrogen On Naturalized Pastures In Atlantic Canada, H T. Kunelius, M R. Carter

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Pastures in Atlantic Canada require periodic rejuvenation to maintain productivity. The effects of method of pasture renovation, soil loosening by paraplowing and nitrogen rates on naturalized pastures were determined. Both direct drilling and cultivation and sowing Lolium perenne L. and Trifolium repens L. in naturalized pastures increased the yields slightly and proportion of white clover. Loosening the soil by paraplowing tended to reduce the yields of naturalized swards. Nitrogen concentration and digestibility of dry matter were greatest in sown pastures.

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Results on the botanical composition of timothy and meadow fescue from 14 field trials in south and central Sweden are presented. Each trial had three years of ley. Treatments were two or three harvests a year, and 0, 100 or 200 kg ha-1 nitrogen per season. Three seed mixtures were used: a mixture of timothy and meadow fescue, and either lucerne or red clover mixed with timothy and meadow fescue. The results show that there is a significant correlation between harvesting system and nitrogen application on the percentage of timothy and meadow fescue. At two harvests, the proportion of timothy …

The Effect Of Phytotoxic Substances In Permanent Grassland, E Haugland, R Elven 2024 University of Oslo

The Effect Of Phytotoxic Substances In Permanent Grassland, E Haugland, R Elven

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The concentration of phytotoxic substances in permanent grassland was studied and related to botanical composition in a two year study. Species that were negatively correlated to growth retardation varied between the two years. This may have been caused by variation in growth conditions between the two years, but may also indicate that single plant species are not the main source for the phytotoxic substances. Dead decomposing tissue may instead be the main source of phytotoxic substances in permanent grassland.
