Land Use And Land Degredation In Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China, By Means Of Remote Sensing, Zhao Ji, Fan Weihong

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is located in northern Chi:t).a and characterized by a semi-arid climate. Most of the area is used as pasture land, although a small part in the south is used as agricultural land to meet the need of food for the rsidents. In recent years, the land is becoming degradated and its _environment becoming more sensitive to the climatic changes and the influence of human activity than it was before. This is, in part, due to the original productive pattern and irrational utilization of land. In this stuy, remote sensing technique which is a very effec. …

A Preliminary Study On The Relationships Between Biomass And Environmental Factors In Natural Grassland In Hulunbeir, Pan Xueqing, Li Zhangchum, Lu Xinlong

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The seasonal dynamic state of the above ground biomass (or herbage mass) of four main types of natural grassland were studied in Hulunbeir grassland. The four types were meadow steppe, Aneurolepidium chinense + Stipa grandis steppe, Aneurolepidium chinense steppe and tussock - small semi - shrubs steppe. The results of the research show that the herbage mass of all four types have strong positive correlations with the monthly accumulated temperature, mean temperature, and precipitation of the preceding month. Water is a major limiting factor to primary production in Hulunbeir grassland. This paper reports on the relationship between seasonal state of …

The Grassland Vegetation Structure, Productivity And Its Dynamics Of Ningxia, Guo Sijia, Xing Zhongzhi, Chen Yizhong, Li Kechang, Zhang Dongsheng, Ma Doucai

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is situated in the semi-arid areas of northwest China, with an elevation of 1 100 m-2 200 m. The annual mean temperature is 7-9°C, the annual mean precipitation and evaporation are 118-660 mm and 1 400-2 400 mm respectively and the total hours of sunshine is 2 200-3 100 in a year (Guo Sijia et al., 1985). As Ningxia is located in the transitional section from semi-humid to semi-arid areas, there are multivarious types of native grassland in the region, but the zonal grasslands types are the steppe, desert-steppe and desert. During 1982-1986, observation stations …

Sociabilities, Morphologie Et Valeurs Nutritives Des Vegetations Prairiales, J M. Dorioz, Ph Fleury, B Jeannin

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

11 s'appuie …

Mapping Herbage Accumulation For The Hunter Region Of Australia Using Climatic Analysis, Growth Indices And Field Experiments, M J. Hill, M F. Hutchinson, A C. Kirby

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Date on monthly and annual pasture production for use in farm budgeting, in farm management models and at the core of expert systems are rare for large areas of the Australian pastoral zone, and for large areas of the world. We have sought here to demonstrate a method of .overcoming this problem by the development of maps of annual and seasonal herbage accumulation for several types of improved pasture in the Hunter Region using comprehensive climatic data, a simple growth model (Fitzpatrick and Nix, 1975) and a small plot pasture trial at Scone (32°S).

Ecological Zoning Of Sao Paulo, Brazil For Tropical Forage Plants, P B. Alcantara, G.L Da Rocha, M J. Pedro Jr, P L. Donzelli

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Climatic and edaphic aspects have been worldwide considered as the main limiting factors for forage production. Plant distribution is highly influenced by edaphic and climatic effects (Humphreys, 1981). In the same way researchers states that the rate of growth of pasture plants is expressed in dry matter production which is a function of the net rate of photosynthesis influenced by climatic factors (Whiteman, 1980). The basic climatic features were put togheter to be expressed as the Multifactor Growth Index which relates light, temperature and moisture affecting the growth of forage plants (Fitzpatrick & Nix, 1970). Present work made an ecological …

Correlation Of Degree Days With Herbage Yields On California's Annual Grasslands, M R. George, W J. Clawson, C B. Wilson, R L. Willoughby, N K. Mcdougald

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Seasonal precipitation and temperature patterns play a significant role in Mediterranean grasslands, influencing within and between year variation in herbage production (Bentley and Talbot 1951, Rossiter 1966, Pitte and Heady 1978). Within the growing season, accumulated degree-days (AAD) which integrate season length with temperature should be an ideal index to herbage production in California's annual grasslands. This paper presents the simple correlations of seasonal herbage yield with ADD and proposes an efficient method of estimating seasonal herbage production profiles.

The Optimum Structure Of Forage Production On Stock-Farm In Gora (Poland), M Sc Zuzanna Sawicka 2025 Institute for Land Reclamation and Grassland Farming at Falenty

The Optimum Structure Of Forage Production On Stock-Farm In Gora (Poland), M Sc Zuzanna Sawicka

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The main reason for undertaking this work is the decrease of cattle on stock-farms in Poland. This situation results from inappropriate structures of forage production and economic policies in agriculture. The stock-farm in Gora, situated in the center of Poland, is a middle classe farm, representing the above-mentioned problems. In many aspects, forage from grassland ought to be a dominant source of livestock feed, especially with regard to considerations of animal hygiene and organization of production. This work presents results of investigations on the optimum structure of forage production and economic aspects of profitable cattle breeding on a stockfarm in …

The Role Of Goats In New Zealand Hill Country Farming, D A. Clark, M G. Lambert 2025 DSIR

The Role Of Goats In New Zealand Hill Country Farming, D A. Clark, M G. Lambert

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The predominant domesticated ruminants in New Zealand are sheep and cattle. However in the last decade other animal species have been incorporated into farming systems, particularly goats which have increased from 10 thousand to 1 million over that time. The motives for this change have primarily been economic ones, in an attempt by farmers to increase income and reduce costs. Goats provide direct financial returns to hill farmers through sale of fibre (mohair, cashgora, cashmere) and meat. In many instances however, the motivation has been one of reduction of weed control costs. Aspects of weed control, pasture response and grazing …

The Crop Of Some Varieties Of Grass And Their Economic Characterization, I Szucs, T Vajsz

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A primary aim of agricultural enterprises is to make the most profitable use of their resources especially if they are scarce in order to attain a maximum of returns. In all sectors, and in grass management also, utilisation of resources can be intensified to the extent where the output value equals the costs of the last input unit. To achieve this, resources of the local enterprises are not sufficient. Therefore, the aim of our investigations is to find that point in the utilisation of different technologies where the last unit of resource returns a product of equal monetary value. Clearly, …

Forage Management: A Diagnosis Method, M Duru, J L. Fiorelli, S Lardon, J C. Moreau, P L. Osty

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

On commercial farms, grazing and forage stock management is especially complex because of the great number of variables that have to be controlled (animal performances, resource stocks ... ), of their inter-relationships and of weather perturbations. Our investigations consist in considering in which way and under which constraints farmers may ajust their forage resources, both in quantity and quality, to achieve desired animal performances. Therefore, it is very important to propose decision rules adapted to real farm conditions and control procedures to carry out these decisions during the year. For continuous stocking, it was suggested to describe the sward in …

Fonctions Et Usages Des Resources Herbacees: Un Exemple Dans Les Prealpes Du Sud (France), B Hubert, J Lasseur, B Coppal, P Jullian

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Pastures And Profit In An Australian Ley Farming System, M A. Ewing, D J. Pannell, D A. Morrison 2025 University of Kentucky

Pastures And Profit In An Australian Ley Farming System, M A. Ewing, D J. Pannell, D A. Morrison

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Annual pasture-cereal rotations dominate land use in the 250-600 rnrn rainfall zone of southern Australia (Puckridge and French, 1983). Although this ley farming system appears simple in concept, farm managers attempting to maximise profits can face complex and difficult decisions. Use of annual legume pasture species such as subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) and medics (Medicago spp.) is widespread. However there are soils, particularly in arid areas, on which legumes do not persist in pasture, so that volunteer herbs and grasses are the dominant pasture species. On these soils a recent trend has been the introduction of legume crops, mainly …

Modeling Plant Species Competition In Conjunction With Selective Grazing, O J. Loewer, C P. West, L D. Parsch, H D. Scott

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The dynamic simulation model GRAZE (Loewer et al., 1987) incorporates plant and beef animal growth in describing the grazing process. GRAZE had its beginnings at the University of Kentucky in 1976 (Walker et al., 1977; Loewer et al., 1981 ; Loewer and Smith, 1986) and was further developed through three regional research projects (Watson and Wells, 1985). Currently, it is being utilized and enhanced by the regional research project S-221 : Development of Profitable Beef-Forage Production Systems for the Southern Region, in part because of its utility in providing biophysical input-output relationships for purposes of economic analysis (Parsch and Loewer, …

A Methodology For Combining Field Data, Experimental Research And Modelling In The Development Of Grassland Systems, E S. Kristensen, J T. Sorensen

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Animal production from grassland is a complex process involving man as well as animals and plants which interact in a changing environment. The production can be considered as two interacting systems, a management and a production system as shown in Figure I. The manager monitors the production, compares this information with goals and if necessary makes adjustments in inputs in order to achieve the goals. The complexity of this process is of course dependent on the number of controlled factors. Beef production based on purchased young bulls fed entirely on pasture without conservation is, for example, much simpler to manage …

Legume Pasture Units For Supplementing Cattle Grazing Rangeland Under Traditional Production Systems In The Nigerian Subhumid Zone, R.R Von Kaufmann, M.A Mohamed Saleem

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The subhumid zone occupies approximately 20 % of West Africa and 50 % percent of Nigeria, subsaharan Africa's most populous country. It is characterised by receivng between 900 and 1500 mm of annual precipitation and havmg between 170 and 280 growing days per annum. Although the zone hs high agricultural potential it has been avoided by both c1;1ltiva!ors and pastoralists until recently mainly due to por s01l frtlhty and the endemic cattle disease, tryponosormas1s, earned by tsetse flies. Now increasing settlement of people is leading to ecological changes that are permitting the permaen residei:ce of ruminant livestock. Clearing ofland for …
