Influence Of The Manner Of Sowing And Vegetation Cycle On The Yield And Seed Quality Of Birdfoot Trefoil (Lotus Corniculatus), D Gataric, S Alibegovic-Grbic

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In ecological conditions of Yugoslavia, birdsfoot trefoil, with its positive features, presents a very significant fodder crop, especially for the hill and mountain regions. However, due to poor seed production technology, there is a shortage of seed for more intensive production. Seed is usually produced on areas intended for the production of fodder, hand sown with large quantities of seed (25-35 kg/ha). The study was undertaken. with the following targets : I/determining the influence of the manner of sowing and vegetation cycle on the yield and the quality of seed ; 2/ determining the optimum sowing manner and vegetation cycle …

Variation Of Seed Yield And Its Components In Common Vetch (Vicia Sativa L.) Under Different Conditions, E Acikgoz, I Turgut, H Ekiz

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) is widely used as a seed or hay crop in Turkey. In humid coastal areas it is principally used fot hay or green herbage while in dry regions it is used mostly for seed. Roughly ground vetch seed is a popular concentrated feed and mixed with straw or cereal grain (A9ikg6z, 1988). Approximately 200.000 ha of common vetch are seeded every year in Turkey. It is sown mostly as a spring-seeded crop and is often subjected to severe heat and drought stress as the season progress. Yields are generally low with an average seed …

White Clover Seed Production In Two Mediterranean Environments Of Tuscany And Sardinia, P Bullitta, Simonetta Bullitta, A Pardini, S Piemontese, P P. Roggero, P Talamucci

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Purpose of the trialwas the identification of the most suitable varieties for white clover Trifolium repens L. seed production in Mediterranean environments. The main reason of this paper is to verify whether it is possible to produce seed of European varieties of white clover in south Europe considering that surfaces for seed production are decreasing in the northern European countries that were normally producers of white clover seed. The production of clover seed in southern Europe could advantageously replace the import from New Zealand and California.

Vegetative Propagation Of White Clover An Application In White Clover Seed Production, P C.D Newton, A I. Popay

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Establishment of white clover for agricultural purposes is invariably by seed. However, natural regeneration is almost entirely vegetative (Chapman, 1987), and flowering may be restricted to a small proportion of individuals within a population (Burdon, 1980) When white clover is present in the soil seedbank, there is potential for both intra- (between classes) and inter-varietal contamination of seed crops. Lancashire et al., (1985) have commented that genetic contamination of white clover seed is a world-wide problem. Volunteer seedlings may be removed from between the crop rows mechanically, but there remains an untreatable area close to the crop which is available …

Viability Of Stylosanthes Seeds As Affected By Storage Duration, J B. Brolmann, B J. Boman 2025 AREC

Viability Of Stylosanthes Seeds As Affected By Storage Duration, J B. Brolmann, B J. Boman

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Tropical legumes such as members of the genus Stylosanthes (sty lo) contribute to the improvement of pastures in the tropics and sub-tropics. Stylosanthes is usually established from seed. In Florida, seed of Stylosanthes has to be produced and collected before the onset of the winter since occasional frosts can damage seed-bearing vegetation. Therefore, early maturing Stylosanthes varieties have been developed. In stylo seed collections maintained for breeding or seed exchange purposes, maintenances of seed viability is critical. New pests or new diseases may require a renewed screening of stored accessions. It is important, then, that the seed source of this …

Modification Of Stolon Growth, Development And Flowering By Plant Growth Regulators In White Clover (Trifolium Repens L.) Seed Crops, A H. Marshall, D H. Hides 2025 AFRC

Modification Of Stolon Growth, Development And Flowering By Plant Growth Regulators In White Clover (Trifolium Repens L.) Seed Crops, A H. Marshall, D H. Hides

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Within the EEC the need to develop low cost less intensive systems of animal production has led to an increase in the importance of legumes generally, and white clover in particular. At present, annual white clover seed usage within the EEC is approximately 4,000 tonnes, however, the self sufficiency rate is expected to fall below 50 % by the end of the 1980s due principally to unpredictable seed yields which make it an unprofitable crop for seed growers. The main component of seed yield in white clover is the number of ripe inflorescences at harvest (Zaleski, 1961) however, the proportion …

Growth Regulator Effects On Seed Production Of Lotus Corniculatus L. And Lotus Uliginosus Schkuhr., J G. Hampton, Qingfeng Li, M D. Hare 2025 Massey University

Growth Regulator Effects On Seed Production Of Lotus Corniculatus L. And Lotus Uliginosus Schkuhr., J G. Hampton, Qingfeng Li, M D. Hare

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Seed yield in both Lotus corniculatus L. and Lotus uliginosus Schkuhr. (syn. L. pedunculatus Cav.) is considered to be limited by the indeterminate growth habit which results in a protracted (2-4 month) flowering period (Witchwoot, 1987; Li and Hill, 1988) leading to wide variation in seed maturity and seed loss through pod shattering. In both species seed yield is determined primarily by the number of inflorescences (Mos, 1983 ; Witchwoot, 1987), and thus treatments which alter or remove apical dominance, enhance shoot production or main stem branching thereby increasing inflorescence numbers (Clifford et al., 1983 ; Li and Hill, 1988), …

Plant Resources And Forage Seed Production In China, Dong Peihua

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

China is situated in the Eastern part of Asia ; from North to South it extends across the temperate and tropical zones. From East to West it has humid, semiarid, arid regions. There is no frost through the year in some part ofHainan Island, Yunnan, Guangdong and Taiwan provinces. Therefore plants grow the year round and there is a wide range of tropical species. The geographical and climatical differences resulted in rich grass resources. There are three hundred million hectares of natural pastures in Northern China, with more than 4000 plant species. These plants have different degrees of feeding value. …

Jurnal Kultivasi

White turmeric is a medicinal plant widely used to treat various diseases. The limited availability of white turmeric seedlings is influenced by the scarcity of quality seeds due to the long dormancy of the rhizomes and the high incidence of pathogen attacks. Tissue culture techniques are one alternative to address the problem of white turmeric seedling availability. This study aims to determine the best concentrations of meta-topolin and kinetin for in vitro shoot multiplication of white turmeric. The research was conducted from January to June 2022 at the tissue culture laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran. This study used a …

Assessing The One Health (Ecosystem, Animal And Human Health) Impacts Of Current Dietary Patterns Based On Farm-To-Fork Life Cycle Assessment In The Republic Of Ireland, Daniel Tymko Burke, Paul Hynds, Anushree Priyadarshini

Articles

Food production and dietary patterns play a central role in the myriad interactions among human, animal, and environmental health, emphasising the need for a One Health approach, and this study aims to evaluate dietary patterns within this framework. A cross-sectional dietary survey of adults was undertaken (2021) with a sample size of 957 respondents, representative of the population of Ireland. Subsequently, a farm-to-fork life cycle assessment (LCA) was employed to assess nine human health and environmental impacts (fine particulate matter formation, freshwater and marine ecotoxicity and eutrophication, human carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic toxicity and terrestrial acidification and ecotoxicity) across thirteen distinct …

Plant Biodiversity Of Short-Grass Prairie On An Eastern Colorado Cattle Ranch From 1988-2024, Emilee D. Cole, Zoey E. Daniels-Sneed, Matthew Galliart, Sarah Elzay

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

This survey examined the possible effects that rotational grazing and large-scale beef cattle production has on plant diversity in short-grass prairie rangeland. The survey was conducted on the Frasier Ranch, a working cattle ranch in eastern Colorado. Plant diversity was measured via species richness, ratio of cool to warm season grasses, and Shannon-Weiner Diversity Index. In this case study, it was determined that plant diversity did not change significantly in recorded years from 1988-2024.

Evaluation Of The Global Durum Panel (Triticum Turgidum Ssp. Durum) For Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus Resistance, Winter Survival, And Seed Characteristics, Megan Engel

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The majority of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum spp. durum; AABB; 2n=4x=28) is predominantly grown in the northern Great Plains of the United States, and is used in the production of semolina, a coarse flour that makes pasta and couscous. Durum has been widely regarded for being more tolerant to abiotic stress, due to its ability to withstand drought and high temperatures. In this thesis, we conducted greenhouse, field, and lab studies, for the traits wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV), winter survival, and single kernel characteristics of the Global Durum Panel version 2 (GDPv2 n = 976), a panel …

Herbicide Management For Bromus Tectorum To Enhance Rangeland Productivity In Western Nebraska, Miranda Mueller

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Cheatgrass, Bromus tectorum (L.), has increased in the mixed-grass prairies of the Nebraska Panhandle. Limited research is available in these ecosystems on the ecological factors that influences its spread and options for management. This study focuses on the efficacy of herbicide treatments (indaziflam and imazapic) as a cheatgrass control method on the native rangelands of western Nebraska. In September of 2022, a mixture of indaziflam (73 g ai ha-1, Rejuvra) and imazapic (70 g ai ha-1, Plateau) was aerially applied at 6 unique upland ecological sites (1-3 ha) near Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Functional group plant biomass data …

Genetic And Soil Influences On The Grapevine Rhizosphere Microbiome, Lauren M. Quackenbush 2025 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Genetic And Soil Influences On The Grapevine Rhizosphere Microbiome, Lauren M. Quackenbush

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In vineyard cropping systems, the rhizosphere microbiome arises through recruitment and filtering of the bulk soil microbiome shaped over time by soil carbon and nitrogen, climate, pH and historical legacies of vineyard management. The recruitment and filtering steps occur under the genetic influences of rootstock and scion that together drive variability in rhizosphere microbiome diversity and composition.

This study compares rhizosphere microbiomes of four Pinot Noir blocks under two rootstocks (101-14 and 420A) and four scions (777, 828, Calera, Mt. Eden). Core microbiomes were consistent across all replicates. The most abundant bacterial phyla were Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria, and Acidobacteriota …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), is an important pest of potato crops capable of boring into and consuming the potato tubers. Although chemical insecticides are employed to control P. operculella populations, their efficacy is frequently limited, raising environmental concerns. Host plant volatiles are important allelochemicals that can be exploited for the management of pests. In our previous studies, we identified five volatile organic compounds (3-ethylacetophenone, 4-ethylacetophenone, geranylacetone, ethylbenzene, and 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone) as allelochemicals potentially influencing the oviposition behavior of P. operculella. Using electroantennography (EAG) and behavioral assays, we found that 4-ethylacetophenone significantly repelled P. operculella at all tested concentrations …

Arkansas Cotton Variety Tests 2024, F. Bourland, J. Gann, B. Lovelady, B. Guest Jr., J. Mcalee, L. Martin, Z. Treadway, C. Henderson

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

The primary goal of the Arkansas Cotton Variety Tests is to provide unbiased data regarding the agronomic performance of cotton varieties and advanced breeding lines in the major cotton-growing areas of Arkansas. This information helps seed companies establish marketing strategies and assists producers in choosing varieties to plant. These annual evaluations will then facilitate the inclusion of new, improved genetic material in Arkansas cotton production. Adaptation of varieties is determined by evaluating the lines at five University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture research sites (Manila, Keiser, Judd Hill, Marianna, and Rohwer). The 2024 tests at Keiser were adversely affected …

Enhancing Remote Sensing Imagery Temporal Resolution Using Starfm Data Fusion Approach For Improved Land Surface Monitoring, Ahmadreza Pourghodrat 2025 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Enhancing Remote Sensing Imagery Temporal Resolution Using Starfm Data Fusion Approach For Improved Land Surface Monitoring, Ahmadreza Pourghodrat

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

High-resolution remote sensing imagery plays a critical role in various domains, such as farm-level agricultural operations, environmental monitoring, and natural resource management. However, data with high spatial resolution typically have low temporal resolution, and those with high temporal resolution often lack spatial detail. For example, Landsat 8 and 9 satellites deliver high spatial resolution images with a 30-meter pixel size but suffer from low temporal resolution, with a 16-day revisit cycle. In contrast, satellites like MODIS and VIIRS provide daily images but with a much coarser spatial resolution (375 meters or more), reducing spatial details. Additionally, there is a lack …

Differential Responses Of The Egg-Larval Parasitoid Chelonus Bifoveolatus To Fall Armyworm-Induced And Constitutive Volatiles Of Diverse Maize Genotypes, Collins O. Onjura, Emmanuel Peter, George O. Asudi, Michael M. Gicheru, Samira A. Mohamed, Toby J.A. Bruce, Amanuel Tamiru

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, is a serious invasive crop pest and threat to food security. Conventional pest control approaches using chemical pesticides can lead to adverse environmental and human health problems calling for safer alternative pest management options. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by plants constitutively and in response to herbivory have been shown to enhance ecologically benign biocontrol alternatives to chemical insecticides for pest management. However, genotypic variations in VOC emissions have also been reported for plant species including maize (Zea mays). Hence, a better insight into the variations in odor profiles of different maize varieties and …
