Nine Tachinidae species were recorded for the first time in Turkey. These are Medina melania (Meigen), Acemya acuticornis (Meigen), Allophorocera ferruginea (Meigen), Graphogaster vestita Rondani, Phasia pandellei (Dupuis), Xysta holosericea (Fabricius), Leucostoma tetraptera (Meigen), Cylindromyia interrupta (Meigen), and Besseria lateritia (Meigen).
Occurrence Of Trypanosoma Sp. In Wild African Sharptooth Catfish (Clarias Gariepinus Burchell, 1822) In The River Asi (North-Eastern Mediterranean), Turkey, Egemen Konaş, Ercüment Genç, Gali̇p Kaya, Cavi̇t Erol

Fifteen African sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell, 1822) were collected from the River Asi (River Orontes) in Antakya (Hatay, Turkey) in November 2007, and fish blood samples were examined for the presence of blood parasites. The existence of infection with Trypanosoma (hemoparasite) was identified in 13 out of the 15 fish specimens. Currently there are no records of the presence of any species of Trypanosoma infecting Clarias gariepinus in Anatolia. Thus this study is the first report of Trypanosoma sp. infections in Clarias gariepinus in Turkey.

The ecological characteristics of ostracods in Lake Sünnet were monitored monthly between May 2005 and September 2007; 9 living and 5 subfossil ostracod taxa were recorded. Among the species, Ilyocypris getica was reported in Turkey for the first time, while Stenocypria fischeri was found for the second time in the country in 55 years. The most abundant species, Limnocythere inopinata, was collected in dry and wet months, while I. bradyi was the only species found in only the wet months. The common chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) is one of the most common and widespread of the Western Palearctic songbirds and breeds primarily in natural forests in the northern, western, and southwestern parts of Turkey. We reevaluated the distribution of this species in Turkey with recent observational data. Although this species has been considered a breeder in southeastern Turkey, results of this study suggest that it probably does not breed in the region any longer. Growth and reproduction of the blotched picarel, Spicara maena (Linnaeus, 1758), were determined based on specimens (n = 2547) collected from the central Aegean Sea between July 2004 and June 2007. The samples consisted of 71.9% females, 16.2% males, and 11.9% immature individuals. The sex ratio of females to males was 1:0.23. The length-weight relationship was W = 0.011L^{3.02}, W = 0.011L^{3.00}, and W = 0.011L^{2.99} for the combined sexes, females, and males, respectively. The Caspian Sea forms the southern limit of the distribution range of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), but little is known about its life history in this area. A total of 362 specimens were collected from the Gomishan wetland (southeast Caspian Sea, Iran) to describe the stickleback's life history characteristics. Samples were taken monthly between February and July of 2008. The maximum ages of the population observed were 2+ years for males and 3+ years for females. Age, growth, and reproduction of the large-scaled gurnard were studied in the central Aegean Sea to provide fisheries managers with the essential data for science-based management. A total of 2342 samples were collected by trawl hauls between July 2004 and June 2007 from İzmir Bay (Turkey). The size of the samples ranged from 3.4 to 15.2 cm total length and the samples were composed of 35.2% females, 25.7% males and 39.1% immature individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:0.73. Many amphibian populations are in decline throughout the world, and one of the most important proposed causes for this decline is agrochemicals, especially pesticides. This study considers the effects of 120 h exposure of embryos and larvae of the red-bellied toad, Bombina bombina, to trifluralin, an herbicide, with renewal acute toxicity tests at 22 ± 1 °C. Adult males and females were induced to breed by gonadotropin injection to obtain test organisms. Lethal concentration values were determined through PROBIT analysis. The species of Oopristus Steffan, 1968 (Hymenoptera: Torymidae: Toryminae: Monodontomerini) of Turkey were studied. Oopristus turkestanicus (Skriptshinsky, 1929) was reared from the eggs of Apodiphus amygdali (Germar, 1817) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in Balcalı, Adana, as a new record for Turkey. Additionally, 2 new species of the genus, O. tayfursokmeni Tarla and Doğanlar, sp. nov., and O. erganicus Tarla and Doğanlar, sp. nov., were described. In this study, we established the presence of 25 aquatic beetle (Coleoptera: Helophoridae) species belonging to 5 subgenera from the Bayburt, Giresun, Gümüşhane, Ordu, and Trabzon provinces in the Black Sea region of Turkey. Specimens were collected between May 2007 and October 2007. Ten species are here recorded for the first time from the Black Sea region and 6 species are recorded for the first time in the research area. In addition, the habitats of these species found in the research area were given.

The aim of the present study was to describe the mollusk syntaxon associated with Cystoseira barbata and Mytilus galloprovincialis facies, which are widely distributed along the coasts of the Sinop Peninsula, Turkey. Four stations were chosen for each facies at depths of 0.5-5 m, and a total of 32 seasonal samplings were performed with 4 replicate groups between February 2006 and November 2006. A chromosomal study of 2 populations of Allactaga williamsi from Konya province in Central Anatolia, Turkey, was performed. The diploid number of 48 chromosomes was found in all of the 5 specimens examined. All of the chromosomes except the Y were biarmed and could be identified by unique G-banding patterns. The C-banding analysis revealed a considerable amount of constitutive heterochromatin in all chromosomes. The C-band positive regions were distributed mainly in centromeric areas, whereas the Y chromosome stained uniformly and C-negatively. The present contribution outlines a first record of 5 encountered terrestrial gastropods new to Qatar. The preliminary account of these species and their zoogeographical origins are discussed. The species belong to 4 families: Subulinidae, with 2 genera, Zootecus and Allopeas; Polygyridae, with 1 genus, Polygra; Hygromiidae, with 1 genus, Monacha; and Helicidae, with 1 genus, Eobania.

Bite forces of 39 species from six families of New World bats with a variety of diets are quantified with a force meter under field conditions. Using regression approaches we search for a model that is a good morphological predictor of these bite forces. Body mass, an index that ignores differences in skull morphology, has a statistically significant relationship with bite force (R2 = 0.76) but is a relatively poor predictor compared with our best model (R2 = 0.94). Using data for 25,780 species categorized on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, we present an assessment of the status of the world's vertebrates. One-fifth of species are classified as Threatened, and we show that this figure is increasing: On average, 52 species of mammals, birds, and amphibians move one category closer to extinction each year. However, this overall pattern conceals the impact of conservation successes, and we show that the rate of deterioration would have been at least one-fifth again as much in the absence of these. To determine the predatory mite family Phytoseiidae associated with spider mites in northwest Iran, a survey was carried out during 2006-2007. Nineteen species from 7 genera of the family Phytoseiidae were collected and identified. Measurements are given and some morphological characters are discussed. A key is provided to identify the adult females of the known 27 species of Phytoseiidae of that area. The southeastern shrew (Sorex longirostris longirostris) is considered uncommon and, due to a lack of knowledge, a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Arkansas. Also, eastern Arkansas may represent a gap in the species’ distribution. Therefore, we evaluated persistence at previous capture sites, surveyed additional counties, quantified microhabitat at our capture locations, and compiled occurrences. Since Sealander and Heidt’s (1990) Arkansas Mammals detailed its occurrence, additional captures by Huston and Nelson (1994), Showen (2006), and this study document new counties (Pope and Searcy) and a new ecoregion (Arkansas Valley).
