In this study, performed in April, July, September, and October 2011 and January 2012 in the northeastern Aegean Sea near Gökçeada in Turkey, 14 species of monogenean trematodes (Anthocotyle merlucci, Kuhnia scombri, Mazocraes alosae, Plectanocotyle gurnardi, Choricotyle chrysophrii, Pseudaxine trachuri, Amphibdella torpedinis, Bivagina alcedinis, Aspinatrium trachini, Microcotyle erythrini, Atrispinum acarne, Atrispinum salpae, Atrispinum seminalis, and Zeuxapta seriolae) were found in a total of 64 fish samples from 17 fish species (Merluccius merluccius, Trigla lucerna, Lichia amia, Alosa fallax, Trachurus mediterraneus, Boops boops, Diplodus annularis, Diplodus vulgaris, Pagellus acerna, Pagellus erythrinus, Salpa salpa, Spondyliosoma cantharus, Spicara flexuosa, Sphyraena sphyraena, Trachinus araneus, …

Eight brackish water snails belonging to 5 families are described. All the samples were taken from 3 different types of water body. They were taken from 1 littoral of an artificial brackish lake, 1 intertidal zone of a brackish tidal river, and 3 mangrove swamps on Qi'ao Island in the Pearl River estuary, Guangdong Province, southern China. Assiminea estuarina Habe, 1946 and Iravadia (Fairbankia) cochinchinensis Bavey & Dautzenberg, 1910 are new records for China. New Records And Distributional Data On Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) From Turkey, Gamze Pekbey, Rüstem Hayat

Sixteen species belonging to subgenus Heteronychia Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1889 of Sarcophaga Meigen, 1826 were recorded from the Bayburt, Erzincan, and Erzurum provinces of Turkey during 2008-2010. Five of these species, Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) armeniaca (Rohdendorf, 1937), S. (H.) bulgarica (Enderlein, 1936), S. (H.) clarahenae (Lehrer, 1999), S. (H.) monspellensia Böttcher, 1913, and S. (H.) recta (Rohdendorf, 1937) represent new records for the Turkish fauna. With these new records, the number of species belonging to subgenus Heteronychia known from Turkey has been increased from 19 to 24.

We performed this study on the subterranean mole rat Nannospalax xanthodon (Nehring, 1898) in western Turkey and we analyzed karyotypes of 121 specimens from 54 localities. We used 33 blind mole rats belonging to 10 different chromosomal races from 10 localities in western Turkey. We applied G- and C-banding techniques to compare chromosomal races as well as clarifying relationships between them. We discussed cytogenetic similarities and differences between chromosomal races. We concluded that 2n = 60C is the ancestor of the other chromosomal races. However, as a result of ongoing evolution processes 2n = 38 and 2n = 60K have become ancestors to chromosomal races on their peripherals. We discovered which rearrangements contribute to the evolution of such a complex chromosomal race system in a genus. …

The concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu, As) in feather samples of raptors of 3 families were determined from southern, central, and northern parts of Punjab Province. Deposition of metals significantly varied among the families for Cd, Zn, Ni, and Pb; further, these 4 metals also significantly differed between Accipitridae and Falconidae, and between Falconidae and Strigidae. Similarly, Cd, Ni, and As were significantly different among southern, central, and northern Punjab. This study was carried out in order to determine the species of the subfamilies Homolobinae, Macrocentrinae, Meteorinae, and Orgilinae in southeastern Anatolia, Turkey. Malaise and light traps and sweeping nets were used to obtain adult specimens from various habitats in the study area during 2010 and 2011. The ubiquitin ribosome fusion gene RpS27a's coding sequence was cloned from diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.). An open reading frame of 468 bp was found to encode a putative 155 amino acid precursor protein, which shares over 90% similarity with other insects' RpS27a protein. Real-time quantitative PCR was carried out to determine the relative expression level in the fourth instar larvae of deltamethrin-resistant and deltamethrin-susceptible strains. The results showed that the expression of RpS27a was significantly higher in the deltamethrin-resistant strain than in the deltamethrin-susceptible strain. This study was conducted in the Bayburt, Erzincan, and Erzurum provinces of Turkey during 2009 and 2010. A total of 10 species in 6 genera from the subfamilies Miltogramminae (4 species in 2 genera) and Paramacronychiinae (6 species in 4 genera) were determined. The genera Angiometopa Brauer and Bergenstamm, 1889 and Brachicoma Rondani, 1856 and the species Angiometopa falleni Pape, 1986, Brachicoma devia (Fallén, 1820), Macronychia polyodon (Meigen, 1824), and M. striginervis (Zetterstedt, 1838) are recorded for the first time from Turkey. Photographs or illustrations of the new records are provided.

A total of 3 identified species of freshwater spiny eels belonging to the order Synbranchiformes were recorded from a total of 55 captured species. One female specimen of Serranus hepatus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Perciformes, Serranidae) was captured off the Black Sea coast of Turkey by bottom trawl at a depth of 80-90 m on 23 March 2012. This is the first record of this species for the Black Sea.

A 2-year study of the food habits of the Persian leopard was conducted in Sarigol National Park in northeastern Iran, North Khorasan Province. Based on an analysis of 52 leopard scats, the principal prey was wild sheep (Ovis orientalis: prey frequency of occurrence = 61.5%; prey relative frequency of occurrence = 47.05%; relative biomass = 53.96%), followed by wild pig (Sus scrofa: frequency = 23.07%; relative frequency = 17.64%; relative biomass = 25.38%) and wild goat (Capra aegagrus: frequency = 13.46%; relative frequency = 10.29%; relative biomass = 6.64%). Some aspects of the reproductive biology of Sepia orbignyana, such as fecundity, spawning strategies, and gonad histology, have been studied in 1048 specimens (538 males and 510 females) caught during trawl surveys from May 2008 to April 2009 in the Aegean Sea. The length at 50% maturity was estimated as 50 mm for males and 70 mm for females. The smallest mature female had a mantle length (ML) of 36 mm; the smallest mature male had a 32-mm ML. One new species, Zerconella (Zerconella) balkanica sp. nov., is described as the second species of the subgenus Zerconella (Zerconella) Willmann, 1953 on the basis of 5 specimens collected in the Dejë Mountains in central Albania. The new species shows a close morphological relationship to Zerconella (Zerconella) leitnerae Willmann, 1953, but can be distinguished from the latter by the absence of setae J4, the position of setae J5, and the size of the dorsal cavities. Geographic distribution of the subgenus Zerconella (Zerconella) is presented.

This work attempted to evaluate the rotifer species diversity indices of Camp Balloki Water Park and infer the state of the water according to rotifers and physicochemical parameters. The diversity indices, species richness, and evenness were assessed every month. The ShannonWeaver index indicated that this habitat had great diversity of rotifers throughout the year. These results were supported by the Simpson dominance, diversity, and reciprocal indices. Water and plankton samples were taken monthly from January 2006 to December 2006. Fluctuating asymmetry has been proposed as a useful noninvasive tool for detecting the influence of the environment on body development. In the present study, we used digital images to estimate the fluctuating asymmetry of the plastron in an isolated Testudo graeca population in Dobrogea, Romania. We extracted data from the photos regarding the area, height, and width of 3 plastron scutes. Amphibian species worldwide are threatened with decline and extinction, making species monitoring an important scientific endeavor. The Bloody Bay Poison Frog, Mannophryne olmonae, a Tobago island endemic, was identified as critically endangered by the IUCN in 2004. Recent evidence suggests that a less severe conservation status may be appropriate for M. olmonae. This study employs acoustic calling surveys, land-use information, and multi-year (2011 and 2012) occupancy modeling techniques to propose an appropriate conservation status for this species.
