Two-Fold Increase In White Stork (Ciconia Ciconia) Population In Lithuania: A Consequence Of Changing Agriculture?, Daiva Vaitkuviene, Mindaugas Dagys
Turkish Journal of Zoology
A countrywide White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) nest census was carried out in Lithuania in 2009 and 2010 by over 20 observers using standardised equipment and methods. The census revealed that the White Stork population has doubled since the previous census in 1994, possibly due to favourable changes in farming practices, with birds increasingly settling on the overhead electricity line poles and gradually abandoning nests in trees. In total, 21,192 White Stork nests were recorded, of which 18,782 (81.4%) were occupied by breeding birds, compared to 9400 occupied nests recorded in 1994. The mean density of occupied nests in the country …

Orientation Of Hippodamia Variegata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) To Healthy And Beauveria Bassiana-Infected Aphis Fabae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) In An Olfactometer System, Marjan Seiedy, Samira Heydari, Mahdi Tork
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Determination of attractive and avoidance behavior of Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is very important in the concomitant use of Beauveria bassiana for control of Aphis fabae (Hemiptera: Aphididae). We investigated the olfactory response of the predatory insect H. variegata when receiving odors pertaining to Aphis fabae infected by B. bassiana EUT116 at 0-, 24-, 48-, and 72-h intervals in a Y-tube olfactometer set-up. Behavioral assays were conducted to assess the ability of adult H. variegata to avoid A. fabae infected with B. bassiana conidia on plants. In these experiments, H. variegata exhibited significant attraction towards the control when the …
Using Body Condition Index Can Be An Unreliable Indicator Of Fitness: A Case Of Sand Lizard Lacerta Agilis Linnaeus, 1758 (Sauria: Lacertidae), Krzysztof Dudek, Zofia Sajkowska, Monika Gawalek, Anna Ekner-Grzyb
Turkish Journal of Zoology
In ecological and morphological studies, researchers often use body condition index as a measure of an individual's fitness. Our research shows that body condition index may be an unreliable method for this purpose, because changes in lizards' body proportions are not stable during their lifetime. Results obtained from a Polish population of the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) show that the body length increases faster than the body mass, meaning that the correlation between these 2 parameters is not linear. Herpetologists frequently use the body condition index to compare the fitness of lizards of different ages. Our study demonstrates that this …

Phylogenetic Relationships Among Populations Of Pristurus Rupestris Blanford,1874 (Sauria: Sphaerodactylidae) In Southern Iran, Sugol Yousofi, Eskandar Rastegar Pouyani, Vida Hojati
Turkish Journal of Zoology
We examined intraspecific relationships of the subspecies Pristurus rupestris iranicus from the northern Persian Gulf area (Hormozgan, Bushehr, and Sistan and Baluchestan provinces). Phylogenetic relationships among these samples were estimated based on the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. We used three methods of phylogenetic tree reconstruction (maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony, and Bayesian inference). The sampled populations were divided into 5 clades but exhibit little genetic divergence between populations, suggesting that these all represent a single species and subspecies. The low genetic divergences suggest that the species may have expanded its range within Iran since the last drying period of the Persian …

The Dry Season Shuffle: Gorges Provide Refugia For Animal Communities In Tropical Savannah Ecosystems, J. Sean Doody, Simon Clulow, Geoff Kay, Domenic D'Amore, David Rhind
USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications
In the wet-dry tropics, animal species face the major challenges of acquiring food, water or shelter during an extended dry season. Although large and conspicuous animals such as ungulates and waterfowl migrate to wetter areas during this time, little is known of how smaller and more cryptic animal species with less mobility meet these challenges. We fenced off the entire entrance of a gorge in the Australian tropical savanna, offering the unique opportunity to determine the composition and seasonal movement patterns of the small vertebrate community. The 1.7 km-long fence was converted to a trapline that was deployed for 18-21 …

The Ontogenetic Effects On The Shell Strength Of Turtles, Dakota Wayne Speck
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The shell of a turtle acts as its first line of defense by resisting the compressive forces applied by a potential predator. Changes in shell size and shape that are associated with ontogenesis and sexual dimorphism have been shown to greatly impact the strength a turtle's shell in a variety of species. Here I have tested the effects of ontogenetic changes on the shell strength of Graptemys geographica. The results suggest that the morphological changes that occur during ontogenesis work to increase the overall strength of the shell. The data did not show any obvious morphological or mechanical differences between …
