First Record Of The Invasive Vinegar Fly Drosophila Suzukii (Matsumura)(Diptera: Drosophilidae) From Eastern Turkey, ALPER ORHAN, RAFET ASLANTAŞ, BANU ŞEBNEM ÖNDER, GÖKSEL TOZLU 2016 TÜBİTAK

First Record Of The Invasive Vinegar Fly Drosophila Suzukii (Matsumura)(Diptera: Drosophilidae) From Eastern Turkey, Alper Orhan, Rafet Aslantaş, Banu Şebnem Önder, Göksel Tozlu

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura, 1931) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is native to East Asia and invasive on the European and American continents. The first records in both Europe and the United States were in 2008. Since that year, it has widely moved across these continents. As D. Suzukii females lay eggs in healthy ripening fruits of several species, particularly in small soft fruits and berries, the species causes agricultural damage. The soft thin-skinned fruit pest, identified as D. Suzukii, has been found in Erzurum, Turkey, where damaged strawberry crops were observed and cultured in the middle of August and September 2014. Initially, 2 …

Predation Of A Scorpion (Scorpiones: Buthidae) By An Assassin Bug(Heteroptera: Reduviidae) In The Brazilian Atlantic Forest, André Lira, Victor Araújo, Cleide Albuquerque

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Litter-dwelling arthropods comprise about three-fourths of the total animal biomass in tropical forests. These invertebrates are involved in many interspecific interactions, from mutualism to predation. We report herein the predation of a scorpion by an immature assassin bug (Harpactorini) during a nocturnal manual search for scorpions in a fragment of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The specimens were found 15 cm above the ground on a seedling, and the prey was two-fold larger than the predator. The assassin bug had its rostrum inserted into the pleura of a juvenile Tityus pusillus Pocock, 1893 scorpion, between the first and second segments of …

On The Distribution And Taxonomy Of Bats Of The Myotis Mystacinus Morphogroup From The Caucasus Region (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae), Petr Benda, Suren Gazaryan, Peter Vallo

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Due to the combination of general morphological similarity among representatives of particular populations and/or taxa, the taxonomy of the Myotis mystacinus morphogroup is traditionally considered to be one of the most complex topics of bat systematics. We used a combination of genetic and morphological approaches to identify which taxa of the morphogroup inhabit the broader Caucasus region (i.e. the territory between Crimea, Southern Russia, Northern Anatolia, and Northern Iran, incl.) and to define the relationships of these taxa to other Palaearctic populations of the morphogroup. Based on the genetic identification (complete sequence of the cytochrome b gene) of 56 specimens …

All specimens examined revealed similar karyotypes comprising 60 chromosomes in the diploid complement. All autosomes and the X chromosome were acrocentric. The subtelocentric Y chromosome was recorded in M. anatolicus but it was acrocentric in the other species. Dark C-bands were observed in centromeric/pericentromeric areas of all the acrocentric autosomes. The X chromosome had a centromeric C-positive area and the Y chromosome was completely heterochromatic in all specimens examined. AgNORs were recorded in the pericentromeric region of seven …

Site Selection Of European Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus Citellus) In Eastern Romania And How They Are Influenced By Climate, Relief, And Vegetation, GHEORGHE ZAHARIA, LAURENTIU PETRENCU, EMANUEL ŞTEFAN BALTAG 2016 TÜBİTAK

Site Selection Of European Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus Citellus) In Eastern Romania And How They Are Influenced By Climate, Relief, And Vegetation, Gheorghe Zaharia, Laurentiu Petrencu, Emanuel Ştefan Baltag

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Climatic and relief factors could limit the distribution of nonmigratory animals, and especially those that inhabit temperate areas. The limitations are stronger for habitat specialist species and a good understanding of these influences can contribute significantly to the development of conservation measures to protect them. The European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) is a small mammal inhabiting pastures and areas of short herbaceous vegetation from Central and Southeastern Europe with limited data about their colony site selectivity. During the first wide survey of the European ground squirrel in Eastern Romania we identified a strong influence of annual precipitation, aspect, slope, vegetation …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The raccoon dog Nyctereutes procyonoides is a newly established alien species in Europe that spread rapidly into many European countries. They were introduced into Latvia, Estonia, and Belarus. Lithuania has been colonized by immigrants from neighboring countries (Belarus and Latvia) and since 1960 the species has occupied the whole country. The data on genetic diversity of the raccoon dog are rather limited, and not all parts of the Baltic region have been covered by previous analyses. In order to compare the level of genetic diversity and describe phylogeographic patterns throughout the raccoon dog distribution in the Palearctic region, a mitochondrial …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Turkey has viable populations of many carnivore species of the Western Palearctic. Among those, ursids and canids are represented by brown bear (Ursus arctos) and 3 canid species, gray wolf (Canis lupus), golden jackal (Canis aureus), and red fox (Vulpes vulpes), respectively. Those species occur in major ecosystems of Turkey and experience a wide range of threats, and they are at the center of human-wildlife conflicts. However, due to a limited number of studies about their ecology and taxonomy, their current distributions, population sizes, and statuses are vague. In this study, we document the 4 species' known data in terms …

Human-Wildlife Conflict As A Barrier To Large Carnivore Managementand Conservation In Turkey, Mark Chynoweth, Emrah Çoban, Çağatay Altin, Çağan Şekerci̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Large carnivorous mammals are wide-ranging animals and thus frequently come into contact with human settlements in agrarian landscapes. This often generates human-wildlife conflict; carnivores potentially damage livestock, agricultural products, or human well-being. In Turkey, the cooccurrence of eight medium-large carnivore species combined with a burgeoning human population and unsustainable consumption of natural resources increasingly threatens carnivore populations. To better understand human-wildlife conflict in Turkey and provide potential solutions, we conducted 959 human opinion surveys in 2006, 2010, and 2014 in 58 distinct settlements surrounding the Sarıkamış-Allahuekber Mountains National Park in Kars, Ardahan, and Erzurum provinces. Results show that respondents regularly …

A Missing Link In The Ionoregulatory Strategy Of Larval Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus) And African Lungfish (Protopterus Annectens): A Closer Look Into The Role Of The Non-Gastric H+/K+-Atpase, Justine E. Doherty 2016 Wilfrid Laurier University

Doherty

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Fishes living in freshwater need to actively compensate for the diffusive loss of ions and osmotic gain of water. The gill is the primary organ of ion regulation and contains an array of ion transport proteins to help maintain homeostasis. Two of the more well studied ion pumps are the Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) and vacuolar type proton ATPase (V-ATPase). This thesis focuses on another ion pump known as the non-gastric H+/K+-ATPase (ngHKA). The ngHKA (gene: atp12a) has not been found in any of the teleost fishes, indicating loss from that lineage. In …

Death In The Family, Maria Botero 2016 WellBeing International

Death In The Family, Maria Botero

Animal Sentience

Barbara King presents grief as the result of the capacity of human and non-human animals for social and affectionate bonds. This is a novel approach that provides a context for interpreting behavioral evidence of grief. The book also offers thought-provoking insights into the relationship between emotion and the expression of emotion. The most surprising element of King’s approach is that, throughout the book, her account of non-human animal grief forces us to reassess the way we treat them.
