Potential Impacts Of The Tpp On Agricultural Trade In The Asia-Pacific Region Utilizing A Gravity Model Framework, Chloe Michelle Worley

LSU Master's Theses

This study examines the impacts RTAs have had in the Asia-Pacific region regarding agricultural trade flows in order to make a prediction on how the proposed TPP agreement will affect the region. The estimation was carried out using a Gravity Model framework to observe the trade creation and trade diversion effects of five existing RTAs in the Asia-Pacific region. These agreements include NAFTA, AFTA, MERCOSUR, APEC, and CER. It is expected that RTAs were to have a positive effect for trade creation and a negative trade diversion effect. The gravity model included export flows of agricultural commodities (defined as food …

Private Market Alternatives For Maintaining Wetland Viability In Coastal Louisiana: A Double-Hurdle Approach, Hua Wang 2016 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Private Market Alternatives For Maintaining Wetland Viability In Coastal Louisiana: A Double-Hurdle Approach, Hua Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The coastal zone of Louisiana contains more than three million wetland acres, or about 40 percent of the nation’s total. Since 1930, Louisiana has experienced a net loss of over 1,900 square miles of coastal wetlands. Currently at risk are the remaining coastal wetlands, 80 percent of which are under private ownership. The acceptance of private wetland owners to restoration programs and their participation in these programs are critical if future coastal restoration efforts are to be successful. Gaining the cooperation by the coastal landowners, however, is complicated by the fact that while the public benefits accruing from wetland protection …

The Vulnerability Of Louisiana To Hurricane Damage And The Value Of Wetlands For Hurricane Risk Reduction, James Luke Boutwell 2016 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

The Vulnerability Of Louisiana To Hurricane Damage And The Value Of Wetlands For Hurricane Risk Reduction, James Luke Boutwell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Coastal Louisiana is annually threatened by coastal storms. Population grown, wetland loss, and potentially increasing storm frequency are likely to increase coastal vulnerability to these events. Increasingly, coastal management entities are managing land resources to reduce the economic impact of natural disasters with the use of natural infrastructure. This is true in Louisiana where the Louisiana Coastal Master Plan allocates billions of dollars to coastal restoration projects, many of which are intended to mitigate economic damages from tropical storms and hurricanes. Despite this significant proposed investment, the risk reduction value provided by these projects is not well known. This analysis …

Animal Welfare And Animal Rights, M.E. Rolle 2016 University of Westminster

Animal Welfare And Animal Rights, M.E. Rolle

Animal Sentience

This overview of Broom’s book, Sentience and Animal Welfare (2014), considers the role the book could play in the animal rights debate. In a thoroughly researched and objectively presented text, Broom lays out information that could place doubt in the minds of decision-makers. By highlighting not just the ways animals resemble humans, but also the ways humans resemble animals, Broom shines a light on a solidly grey area in the animal rights debate.

Seed Source May Determine Field-Specific Germination And Emergence: The Source By Planting Environment Interaction, Erin K. Espeland, Lora B. Perkins, Matthew E. Horning, Richard C. Johnson

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Farm environmental conditions and management practices can result in within-cultivar differences in seed quality and lead to transgenerational plasticity (farm-specific effects on offspring, or TGP) that affect germination and emergence in transplant fields. We used three perennial bunchgrasses, [green needlegrass (Nassella viridula) ‘Lodorm’, slender wheatgrass (Elymus trachycaulus) ‘Pryor’, and bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoregneria spicata) prevariety registered germplasm P-7] to determine if seeds exhibited TGP. We also determined if TGP was affected by the interaction between production farms and planting environments (farm × environment interaction, or context-dependent TGP), using four laboratory temperature regimes to test germination response and four field environments to …
