Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Are you a member of the Anti-Slavery Society? It would be interesting to know how many members of NAIES know that there is such an organization. The question of membership was asked of the editor this past summer when in London, England, working on a research project The answer was "no"; however, in July, 1977, the rolls of the Anti-Slavery Society for the Protection of Human Rights did increase by one, and the number of members in the United States jumped significantly. The most recent membership report listed a total Society membership of 907. The number of members in the …

[Review Of] Milton J. Esman (Ed.), Ethnic Conflict In The Western World, Hardy T. Frye Jan 1978

[Review Of] Milton J. Esman (Ed.), Ethnic Conflict In The Western World, Hardy T. Frye

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Ethnic conflict has reemerged in the economic and political arenas of the western world, less between nation states, more within the boundaries of particular nations. The type of conflict that emerged in the United States during the 1950's and 1960's was racial, in sharp contrast to the ethnonationalist conflict in western Europe and Canada. The latter has a long history and has been shaped by cultural, linguistic, and religious differences. This conflict declined after World War II but is now back on the scene. The explanation of its return is one of the major purposes of this book. A second …

[Review Of] Jane B. Katz (Ed.), I Am The Fire Of Time: The Voices Of Native American Women, Gretchen Bataille Jan 1978

[Review Of] Jane B. Katz (Ed.), I Am The Fire Of Time: The Voices Of Native American Women, Gretchen Bataille

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Speaking at the Annual Conference on Ethnic and Minority Studies in April, Bea Medicine admonished the audience that rather than lament the work which has not yet been done by or about Native American women, we must recognize the significance and breadth of what has already been written. I Am the Fire of Time shows just that. The selections come from nineteenth century transcripts as well as from contemporary women poets and activists. Over and over the reader is reminded that the Native American woman was not and is not the drudge or burden bearer portrayed in American fiction and …

Close Encounters Of Three Kinds: The Writing Of Indian History, A Review Essay, Martin Zanger Jan 1978

Close Encounters Of Three Kinds: The Writing Of Indian History, A Review Essay, Martin Zanger

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Can non-Indians write ”Indian history”? Professor Roy W. Meyer, Director of American Studies at Mankato State University, confronts himself with that vexing question in the prefatory remarks to his survey of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara peoples from pre-European contact times through the 1970‘s. Although Meyer‘s book is a case study of specific Indian societies, a number of themes he emphasizes will be useful for teachers and students who are not specialists in Indian studies.

Educational Reform In Los Angeles And Its Effect Upon The Mexican Community, 1900-1930, Gilbert G. Gonzalez Jan 1978

Educational Reform In Los Angeles And Its Effect Upon The Mexican Community, 1900-1930, Gilbert G. Gonzalez

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The theme of equal educational opportunity was a major concern of the urban Chicano Movement in the late sixties. Chicanos accused the entire school system of racism and insensitivity towards the Chicano community. Schools, declared the activists, used institutionalized techniques such as intelligence tests and a tracking system to insure that disproportional numbers of Chicano children would be placed in vocational education courses or in classes for the mentally retarded.

Review Of Videotape Presented At The 6th Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies: Alan Hertzberg, The Autobiography Of Miss Jane Dubois, James D. Henderson

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

To say that The Autobiography of Miss Jane Dubois is an exciting new departure in the venerable art of autobiography does not do full justice to the work under review here. Nor is it sufficient to say that in giving us this study of human life, producer Alan Hertzberg proves that works of integrity and high purpose can be crafted by the video artist, holding out the promise that if it would, American television could lift itself from the slough of mediocrity in which it has ever wallowed. What makes this twelve- chapter study an unforgettable experience is Jane Dubois …

An Exploratory Study Of Black And White College Students On The Hand Test, Marie Clark Jan 1978

An Exploratory Study Of Black And White College Students On The Hand Test, Marie Clark

Masters Theses

In the past Blacks have not been used in the construction or development of norms for psychological tests, though they are routinely administered to Blacks. Several researchers have made an effort to determine whether tests which have been standardized on White subjects are applicable to Blacks (Megargee, 1966; Johnson & Sikes, 1965; Mussen, 1953). These authors found that differences in personality of Blacks and Whites on personality tests should not be used to make inferences unless the two groups are matched on a number of prominent variables.

In general, the research suggests that there are significant differences between Black and …

Indigenous And Non-Indigenous Paraprofessionals: An Empirical Comparison, John E. Blount Jr., Kirk W. Elifson, William Chamberlain

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper provides a comparative description of indigenous and nonindigenous paraprofessionals who were employed in a social service capacity in a large urban setting. Personal interviews were conducted with 88 paraprofessionals employed by the Fulton County Department of Family and Children Servives (Atlanta, Ga.). The primary variables discussed include an assessment of the respondent's background, their present employment situation, experience with and attitudes toward welfare and general attitudinal measures. The results provide a basic demographic profile of the indigenous and non-indigenous paraprofessional and indicate their differing characteristics. Briefly, the indigenous respondents were less anomic, felt more efficacious in terms of …

Debunking Sapphire: Toward A Non-Racist And Non-Sexist Social Science, Patricia Bell Scott Jul 1977

Debunking Sapphire: Toward A Non-Racist And Non-Sexist Social Science, Patricia Bell Scott

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The term "Sapphire" is frequently used to describe an age-old image of Black women. The caricature of the dominating, emasculating Black woman is one which historically has saturated both the popular and scholarly literature. The purpose of this paper is debunk the "Sapphire" caricature as it has been projected in American social science. By exposing the racist and sexist underpinnings of this stereotype, it is hoped that more students and scholars might be sensitized and encouraged to contribute to the development of a nonracist and non-sexist social science.

Dissertations and Theses

This is a descriptive study of grassroot organizations in the Black community of Portland, Oregon. The Vanguard [Vol. 24, No. 3], Spring 1977, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

This is the disturbing phrase that sticks in my mind from a late evening session of the annual meeting of the National Indian Lutheran Board (NILB) at Tempe, Arizona, February 25. These words came from NILB's director, Eugene Crawford, after we had heard first-hand reports from two young Indian men - Russell Peters of Massachusetts and Roger Gabriel of Maine.

Lutherans in the United States and Canada quickly voiced strong criticism of the Republic of South Africa's October 19 bannings and arrests of black leaders.

Several Lutheran leaders issued statements condemning the repressive actions (see page 2 for excerpts).

Multi-national corporations are finding out they can't count on the church's silence. And Christians have discovered an effective way to witness to justice and compassion.

The Lutheran Church in America, for example, joined with 15 other Protestant and Roman Catholic groups in filing stockholder resolutions with five major U.S. banks.

Forrest Gerard - the new assistant secretary for Indian Affairs in the Interior Department - has urged Indian leaders to call for the Carter Administration to issue a policy statement on Indian concerns.

Gerard, himself a Blackfoot Indian, made this suggestion in his speech to the recent National Congress of American Indians - the largest and oldest Indian organization.

"I'm disappointed the President didn't go further," said Dr. Robert Marshall, president of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). He made the comment when questioned about President Carter's pardon of Vietnam draft evaders.

Dr. Marshall urged Carter to extend pardons to military deserters and to those given less than honorable discharges.

A 70-year old woman rode a bus from Seattle, Washington. ~ young family drove from Pensacola, Florida. They were joined by almost 300 others participating in the 1977 Human Relations Institute at Valparaiso University, July 29-31. The Institute theme of "Faithful Interdependence'' encouraged participants to explore Christian ministries in the pursuit of global justice.

Dr. Elizabeth Bettenhausen, Secretary for Social Concerns in the Lutheran Church in America, addressed the Institute at a Saturday evening dinner. Dr. Bettenhausen had just returned from the Lutheran World Federation Assembly in Tanzania, Africa.

The U.S. Government Accounting Office (GAO) has reported that almost 3500 American Indian women were sterilized without their proper consent between 1973 and 1976.

Senator James Abourezk, chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Indian Affairs, released the GAO's report. The subcommittee had requested the GAO study because Senator Abourezk had received many complaints that Indian women were being sterilized as a birth-control method without their knowledge or consent.

"We want to sensitize all our congregations, to help them recognize all aspects of cultural diversity."

That's the task of a newly created organization, Multi-Cultural Lutheran Education, as described by Dr. Marlin Schulz. Dr. Schulz has a long title to go with his job at Missouri Synod's Board of Parish Education. But his primary responsibility is to encourage and support the development of this new organization.
