[Review Of] Roberto V. Vallangca. Pinoy: The First Wave, Masayuki Sato
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The importance of documenting “oral histories” in print has to be emphasized among all Pacific Asian American groups. Dr. Roberto Vallangca has done a superb job and should be rewarded greatly as an encouragement to others to document the personal histories of the “old timers” who immigrated to Hawaii and mainland United States before the war.

Abstracts Of Papers Presented At The 7th Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
This paper reviews some of the most salient aspects of E. M. Rogg's (1974) seminal work, The Assimilation of Cuban Exiles; The Role of Community and Class--a sociological study of the Cuban community in the town of West New York in northeastern New Jersey. Although taking issue with some of the author's theses, this paper elaborates on other findings of the book in question by means of more recent participant-observation field research in the same neighborhood. For example, the new data confirms Rogg's proposition that the organized ethnic minority helps to direct the process of acculturation, though slowly.

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
Ethnic studies is a rather strange field. In the first place, it is not a "field" in the traditional sense of other academic disciplines, but rather it seeks to include any and all disciplines. Second, it deals with people, and as our colleagues in the so-called "behavioral sciences" have discovered, people are perhaps the most unpredictable of all living things to study, thus the problems are many. Third, many of the subjects which we in ethnic studies have chosen to research, by the very nature of the fact that we deal with ethnic minorities, have tended to strike others not …
Pasta Or Paradigm: The Place Of Italian-American Women In Popular Film, Daniel Golden
Pasta Or Paradigm: The Place Of Italian-American Women In Popular Film, Daniel Golden
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The year is 1930, the film is Little Caesar, and Hollywood begins its long and often irresponsible tradition of portraying the Italian-American male as gangster, thug, sociopath. The gangster genre has traditionally focused on male activities--men in groups, their rites of passage into underworld manhood, and their perverted American dreams of success achieved through community extortion, syndicated corruption, and blood murder. But hidden in the story of Caesar Enrico Bandello, who has justifiably been called our "archetypal" film gangster, we also discover fragmentary, but important, early portrayals of the Italian woman in America.

[Review Of] William E. Sims, Black Studies: Pitfalls And Potential, Adlean Harris
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
According to the author of this important study, the students who instigated the demand for Black Studies were a “new breed” of Black students. They were different from the White Majority in their manners, speech, style of dressing, and walking. They were also different from their Black predecessors in these same areas. In addition, they were veterans of the Civil Rights Movement; their heroes were Black activists--Ralph Brown, Malcolm X, and Eldridge Cleaver; they had no intention of “escaping the ghetto.”

Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The growing awareness of America's ethnic pluralism has become one of the factors shaping modern American history. Ethnic writers, as well as ethnic leaders, began the task of illuminating the meaning of their own historic and cultural traditions within the larger contexts of the nation and of the world. They have served as interpreters of their people.
Black Attitudes Towards Social Affiliation With Whites And Its Influence On Academic Achievement, Alvin Finderson
Black Attitudes Towards Social Affiliation With Whites And Its Influence On Academic Achievement, Alvin Finderson
Masters Theses
If blacks are to compete successfully in white academia, they must be able to communicate and interact with white students and professors. Acceptance of middle-class white students with an academic achievement orientation, as friends and equals, should enable or assist blacks in developing positive attitudes toward academic achievement. This in turn should positively affect scholastic performance. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between black attitudes toward social affiliation with whites and successful academic performance on integrated campuses.
This hypothesis was tested by measuring the association between black self-reported grade point averages and their responses to an …

"The strength I see, the hope I have, is that we are here tonight."
With those words, LHRAA's immediate past president Robert Skare described how the 1979 Human Relations Institute was itself an embodiment of the weekend's theme-"People of Vision, People for Promise: developing Christian leadership for social justice in the 1980s."

Fortunately, the annual conference of the National Indian Lutheran Board (NILB), was filled with exceptions. From Veronica Murdoch, executive director of the National Congress of American Indians, and from other respected Native Americans, they heard the bad news:
Indians are still feeling the sharp sting of racism and injustice. Poverty and despair have left lasting wounds. And the church and government seem to persist in their apathetic and inadequate response.

Just when many had come to think Custer was the name of a state park and the spirit of Native Americans caught in tourist attractions, the dust began to stir on reservations. American Indians, seemingly divided by tribal distinctions and geographic distances, were unanimously calling the country to account for its outrageous dealings with Indians over the years.
South Dakota became a focal point, and it was there in 1971 that Indians helped Lutherans develop a unique ministry in a structure called the National Indian Lutheran Board (NILB). NILB and other Lutherans were to play a key role as the …
Racial Differences In The Confident Relationship, Ruth E. Dunkle
Racial Differences In The Confident Relationship, Ruth E. Dunkle
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Numerous researchers have studied the black family in American society. Unfortunately, too few have focused on the role of the family in the life of the elderly. In this paper it is my intention to focus on the strengths and weaknesses of the black family and, in particular, on the black family member as confidant.
Frazier, in a book, The Black Family, edited by Robert Staples, discusses the character of the black family during the various stages of its development. He purports that the black family has been affected by the social isolation of blacks in American society. Frazier believes …

Two Perspectives On Organizationally-Inspired Barriers To Innovation In Schools Of Social Work: Short And Long Term Strategies To Promote National Minority Group Representation, R. Louis Mcneely, John Oliver
Two Perspectives On Organizationally-Inspired Barriers To Innovation In Schools Of Social Work: Short And Long Term Strategies To Promote National Minority Group Representation, R. Louis Mcneely, John Oliver
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper focuses on conditions conceived to militate against innovation and change in organizations adhering to administrative principles found often in many workplaces. While these principles are not peculiar to schools of social work, these schools are singled out along with two related problems identified often by persons employed in these schools as ones for which few effective innovations have been implemented. These problems center upon how these schools may best achieve an adequate representation among faculty members, of minority group staff, and an adequate representation of substantive course offerings focusing upon the experiences of national minority group members. The …
The Perpetuation Of Institutional Racism Through Ethnic And Racial Minority Content In The Curriculum Of Schools Of Social Work, James E. Herrick
The Perpetuation Of Institutional Racism Through Ethnic And Racial Minority Content In The Curriculum Of Schools Of Social Work, James E. Herrick
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The author asserts that the effect of assimilation of ethnic and racial minority content into the curriculum of schools of social work may perpetuate institutional racism.
Social work education as well as the purpose of the profession itself are viewed as basically one of helping people adjust and accommodate to the dominant and racist institutions of our society. Consequently, the author argues, incorporation of ethnic and racial minority, content into curriculum that serves such a function is likely to serve ends to which it was not intended.
Five suggested areas of change in the mission of social work education are …

Blacks In The American Criminal Justice System: A Study Of Sanctioned Deviance, Terry Jones
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Almost since the beginning of Black history in America there have been differences of opinion as to what the role of Blacks should be in reference to the criminal justice system. In the beginning these differences centered around the issue of cooperation or resistance to the slave system and a criminal justice system that guaranteed slavery durante vita. Now, while the issue is no longer slavery, Blacks continue the debate over cooperation versus resistance to the criminal justice system. What should the role of Blacks be in reference to the criminal justice system? Can Blacks be of greater assistance to …

In Iowa, elderly adults can now use food stamps to purchase meals in restaurants. This is especially helpful because many older persons have difficulty preparing their own meals.
This is just one of many innovations of Victor Preisser, Iowa's Commissioner for Social Services.
Preisser, who's created controversy by applying business management to the state's social services, was the speaker for the second annual state-wide meeting of the LHRAA State Council in Waverly, September 9.

After 40 years of U.S. intervention and support of one of the most unjust and repressive dictatorship in Latin America, President Carter announced on Thursday, November 9, that he was suspending all economic aid to Nicaragua.
Terry Cannon, a New York journalist and I landed in Managua the following day. We had been sent by several organizations to investigate the situation since the bloody civil war, and arrived in the capital city in time to see President Anastasio Somoza's angry televised reply. He made it clear that he will neither resign nor hold a meaningful plebescite.

For the second year, the Wheat Ridge Foundation has granted $23,700 to the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America (LHRAA) to conduct two workshops for congregations in racially changing neighborhoods.
Last year's workshops involved seven midwest and seven west coast congregations. In the two week-long events - one in Chicago and one in Los Angeles - lay leaders and pastors developed skills to help their congregations minister more effectively in their changing communities (November 1977 and December 1977 VANGUARD).
