Of all the foreign-born elements of Oregon's population, the German-born have been the most prominent in terms of size and continuity. At the turn of the century they were an organized and enterprising ethnic group that supported a German-language press, numerous social clubs and ethnic churches. The German-born contributed their share to the development of Oregon through men whose names are almost household words today: Meier and Frank, Weinhard, Dammasch, Villard and Weyerhaeuser. Yet for all of their visibility, the Germans in Oregon have not been remembered as a particular ethnic group.

The purpose of this study was to obtain information from UNO alumni regarding their perceptions of various aspects of the university. In particular, alumni participation in university events and their visits to the campus were researched. Alumni were also asked to state their reasons for attending UNO, to rate various dimensions of the university, and to rate the importance of their UNO educations to their careers and lives. The questionnaire gathered further information on alumni pride in UNO, the importance of several sources of information concerning the university, and interest in topics covered in the alumni publications.

This work describes the use of three sources of data, cemetery inscriptions, vital registrations of births and deaths, and the manuscript census rolls. Consequently, it emphasizes the technique and methodology of the investigation. While the primary purpose of the study was to discover the uses and limitations of the material, observations about the sample never the less derive from the data, for the tools of historical demography can provide information about the population that becomes almost biographical in nature.

During the past few years, real estate markets have . undergone many adjustments. High interest rates, inflation, and competition for investment capital necessitated major changes. On a national level, the subject of housing sales has received considerable commentary. The ability of sellers in Omaha to exchange their units has probably been curtailed as well. This study attempts to examine real estate listings within the Omaha/Douglas County Multiple Listing Service areas (see Map 1) and describe some of the changes.

For the first time since the Great Depression, local governments throughout the United States have begun to experience severe revenue-expenditure imbalances. Inflation, rising expectations, and citizen demands for services have produced governmental intervention into heretofore untouched areas. Combined with the generally decreasing rate of local revenue growth and with reductions in federal and state aid, this has produced serious fiscal problems for many local governments. With resources no longer available to provide prior levels of public services, many local governments have had to cut back on their activities.
