Independent Living and Community Participation

The Just Home project in Missoula County, Montana, is a collaborative initiative supported by the MacArthur Foundation to address the intersection of housing instability and justice system involvement. Led by Homeword, Inc. and the Missoula County Community Justice Department, the project seeks to develop sustainable, community-driven solutions that reduce incarceration and improve housing outcomes for vulnerable populations. To inform this work, the University of Montana’s Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities conducted a comprehensive community needs assessment using mixed methods, including administrative data analysis, qualitative interviews with service providers, and community engagement with unhoused and justice-involved individuals.

While it has been suggested that the compounded effects of population growth and climatic pressures over the Classic period (c. 300-1000 CE) led to a health crisis among the Maya, there is no current knowledge of whether there were significant sex differences in risks of mortality and frailty associated with metabolic stressors. Japan is in the midst of a population implosion. Schools struggle to fill classrooms, and vacant houses are a common sight in smaller towns. While the demographic shift makes it difficult to sustain traditional ways of life, it also brings opportunities for new possibilities. This essay highlights the challenges and opportunities of demographic change through the stories of two communities: Tsushima City in Aichi Prefecture and Ikuno Ward in Osaka City. In this brief, author Kenneth Johnson reports that New Hampshire’s population reached 1,409,032 on July 1, 2024, an increase of 6,800 since July 2023, according to new Census Bureau estimates. The state’s population gain was larger than the prior year’s, but smaller than in the two preceding years. Between 2023 and 2024, New Hampshire's entire population gain was due to migration. The state had a net gain of 9,200 people from migration, which offset a loss of 2,400 more deaths than births. Nine of the state’s ten counties gained population, only Coös County experienced a minimal population loss.

This study analyzes the effects of China's Universal Two-Child Policy, enacted in 2016, on women's employment outcomes. The implementation of this policy has highlighted the challenges women face in the labor market, revealing a significant disparity between the policy's effects and expectations, as evidenced by the simultaneous occurrence of low fertility intentions and employment difficulties. This research employs a mixed methodology to systematically evaluate the policy's effects on the quality and stability of women's employment while also investigating the underlying mechanisms of this impact. This bibliometric analysis explores global trends, author productivity, institutional and country contributions, citation patterns, and thematic relationships in the literature linking smoking and mental health. Data from the Scopus database were retrieved using specific keyword combinations related to smoking and mental health, resulting in 1,782 eligible articles after filtering for research quality. The study examines publication trends, identifies high-impact studies, and maps thematic clusters in the field. Results indicate a notable increase in publications after 2000, driven by growing recognition of smoking's impact on mental well-being and the integration of mental health considerations in tobacco control policies. Women’s happiness can be influenced by various factors, including marital status. This study analyzes the relationship between marital status and women's happiness in Indonesia using pooled crossectional data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) wave 4 & 5 in 2007 and 2014. The probit regression method is applied to estimate the impact of marital status on the probability of happiness. Results show that widowed and/or divorced women have significantly lower probabilities of happiness than married women (p-value < 0.01). In addition, the probability of being happy for women who are divorced is higher than those who are widowed (p-value < 0.1). This study also emphasizes that education has an important role in improving women's happiness. The implications of this study suggest the importance of policy interventions to improve access to education for women, particularly for those who are socially and economically vulnerable.

In this brief, authors Kenneth Johnson and Tyrus Parker report that during the pandemic era from 2020 to 2022 New Hampshire gained both people and income from migration to the state. The state's net migration gain of 26,000 was a significant increase from the net migration gain of 17,000 in the three years prior to the pandemic. Net migration gains to New Hampshire increased because fewer people left the state, and in-migration from other states grew modestly.

This project proposes a geoinformatics approach for understanding the migration of extended families in historical contexts. It uses full-count longitudinal census data (developed by the Minnesota Population Center) and graph methods to define multi-generational extended family relationships and to model the locational structures of these families as a spatial network. Graph algorithms and mapping methods are used to interrogate these structures as reflections of the patterns of family outmigration and extension over time. This report details 943 responses to the 2025 Nebraska Rural Poll, the 30th annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked a series of questions about their confidence in institutions. Trends for some of the questions are examined by comparing data from the 2017 Poll and 2021 Poll to this year’s results. In addition, comparisons are made among different respondent subgroups, that is, comparisons by age, occupation, region, etc. Based on these analyses, some key findings emerged:

Starting three years ago, the proportion believing their community changed for the worse was more than the proportion believing it had changed for the better (similar to what occurred in 2003 and 2009). This study examines the relationship between encounters with the criminal justice system and psychological well-being in a large U.S. sample. This project builds upon previous research about the negative outcomes tied to such encounters by examining potential long term negative effects on people’s subjective well-being and sense of meaning and purpose in life. Panel study participants indicated their lifetime exposure to the criminal justice system, and then, about two years later, indicated their current subjective well-being and sense of meaning and purpose in life. This article documents a growing body of literature recognizing the role of arts and culture, including local knowledge and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), in climate change endeavors. The digital divide remains a persistent barrier to civic participation and social inclusion in urban America, particularly in historically underserved communities. This mixed-methods study investigates how digital lack of access affects civic engagement, social capital, and community cohesion in U.S. cities, with a focus on Chicago’s South Side, Harlem New York, St. Louis, and Orlando. Drawing on quantitative data from recent surveys and qualitative insights from peer-reviewed literature, the research applies four sociological frameworks, Urban Sociology, Social Capital Theory, Critical Race Theory, and Symbolic Interactionism. การย้ายถิ่นภายในประเทศไทยมากกว่าร้อยละ 10 มีจุดหมายปลายทางไปสู่กรุงเทพมหานคร ซึ่งส่งผลสำคัญต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงพลวัตของประชากรเมืองอย่างรวดเร็ว อย่างไรก็ตาม ระบบทะเบียนราษฎรไม่สามารถสะท้อนการเคลื่อนย้ายดังกล่าวได้อย่างทันท่วงที กล่าวคือ จำนวนประชากรที่อาศัยอยู่จริงมีสูงกว่าจำนวนประชากรตามทะเบียนราษฎรอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ จึงนำไปสู่การเกิดขึ้นของกลุ่ม "ประชากรแฝง" ที่ยังไม่ได้จดทะเบียนในพื้นที่ ซึ่งย่อมส่งผลให้การจัดสรรทรัพยากรและการบริหารจัดการเมืองไม่สอดคล้องกับความเป็นจริง งานวิจัยฉบับนี้แบ่งการศึกษาเป็นสองส่วน สำหรับส่วนแรก เพื่อทำความเข้าใจลักษณะและรูปแบบเชิงพื้นที่ของการย้ายถิ่นเข้าสู่กรุงเทพมหานคร ผู้วิจัยวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลจากสำมะโนประชากรและเคหะ พ.ศ. 2533 2543 และ 2553 ด้วยสถิติเชิงพรรณนา อีกทั้งยังมีการผนวกข้อมูลการใช้ประโยชน์ที่ดินและข้อมูลรายรับจากภาษี เพื่อทดสอบความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างปัจจัยเชิงพื้นที่กับการย้ายถิ่นเข้าสู่พื้นที่ด้วยการวิเคราะห์การถดถอยพหุ โดยผลการศึกษาพบว่า จำนวนผู้ย้ายถิ่นเข้าสู่กรุงเทพมหานครมีเปลี่ยนแปลงตามช่วงเวลา โดยมีการลดลงใน พ.ศ. 2543 และกลับมาเพิ่มขึ้นใน พ.ศ. 2553 นอกจากนี้ ยังพบการเปลี่ยนแปลงรูปแบบการกระจายตัวของผู้ย้ายถิ่น โดยใน พ.ศ. 2533 มีการกระจุกตัวในเขตกรุงเทพฯ ชั้นใน แต่หลังจากนั้นขยายตัวออกสู่เขตกรุงเทพฯ ชั้นนอกอย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยเพิ่มขึ้นจาก 1.02 แสนคน เป็น 2.07 แสนคน ในช่วงระยะ 20 ปี ทั้งนี้ผลการวิเคราะห์การถดถอยพหุชี้ให้เห็นว่า ความหนาแน่นของประชากร รูปแบบการใช้ประโยชน์ที่ดิน และรายได้จากภาษีท้องถิ่น ล้วนเป็นปัจจัยเชิงพื้นที่ที่มีความสัมพันธ์เชิงบวกสำหรับผู้ย้ายถิ่นที่ระดับนัยสำคัญทางสถิติร้อยละ 5 ขณะที่สัดส่วนวัยแรงงานมีความสัมพันธ์เชิงลบที่ระดับนัยสำคัญทางสถิติร้อยละ 10 สำหรับการศึกษาส่วนที่สอง ซึ่งเป็นการวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยกำหนดความตั้งใจอยู่ต่อของประชากรแฝง โดยใช้ข้อมูลระดับบุคคลจากการสำรวจการย้ายถิ่น พ.ศ. 2557-2564 ผ่านแบบจำลองสมการโครงสร้าง (Structural Equation Modeling: SEM) พบว่า แบบจำลองสำหรับประชากรแฝงที่พำนักอยู่ในกรุงเทพมหานครมากกว่าหนึ่งปี มีความสอดคล้องกับข้อมูลเชิงประจักษ์ในเกณฑ์ดี (RMSEA = 0.04, RMR = 0.06, CFI = 0.96) โดยปัจจัยด้านเศรษฐกิจมีอิทธิพลโดยตรงสูงสุดต่อความตั้งใจอยู่ต่อของประชากรแฝง (β = 0.30) ในขณะที่ปัจจัยด้านประชากรมีอิทธิพลทางอ้อมผ่านระยะเวลาการพำนักในระดับต่ำกว่า (β = 0.08) ซึ่งผลลัพธ์นี้สอดคล้องกับกลุ่มประชากรแฝงที่พำนักไม่เกินหนึ่งปี จึงอาจกล่าวได้ว่า โอกาสทางเศรษฐกิจเป็นกลไกหลักในการกำหนดการตัดสินใจตั้งถิ่นฐานของประชากรแฝง โดยสรุปแล้ว การศึกษานี้ชี้ให้เห็นว่า การย้ายถิ่นเข้าสู่กรุงเทพมหานครได้รับอิทธิพลจากปัจจัยเชิงพื้นที่ ในขณะที่ความตั้งใจอยู่ต่อของประชากรแฝงถูกกำหนดโดยปัจจัยทางเศรษฐกิจในระดับบุคคล ซึ่งถือเป็นหลักฐานเชิงประจักษ์ที่ชี้ให้เห็นถึงความจำเป็นในการกำหนดนโยบายบริหารจัดการเมืองที่สอดคล้องกับบริบทพื้นที่ โดยการบูรณาการการวางผังเมือง นโยบายตลาดแรงงาน และการปรับปรุงระบบทะเบียนราษฎร เพื่อเพิ่มประสิทธิผลในการบริหารจัดการประชากรเมืองในระยะยาว

การศึกษาพลวัตทางสถานะสุขภาพของประชากรสูงอายุมีความสำคัญต่อการเตรียมความพร้อมระบบสาธารณสุขในอนาคต โดยปกติการวิเคราะห์มักใช้แบบจำลองหลายสถานะ (multi-state model) ผ่านข้อมูลการติดตามระยะยาว (longitudinal data) อย่างไรก็ตาม ด้วยสภาพความจำกัดของข้อมูลประเภทดังกล่าวในประเทศไทย งานศึกษาฉบับนี้จึงได้พัฒนาแบบจำลองหลายสถานะรูปแบบมาร์คอฟ (Markov) โดยประยุกต์ใช้ข้อมูลภาคตัดขวาง จากการสำรวจประชากรสูงอายุในประเทศไทยสองรอบล่าสุด คือ พ.ศ. 2564 และ 2567 เพื่อประมาณค่าความน่าจะเป็นของการเปลี่ยนสถานะทางสุขภาพ ระหว่างสถานะอิสระ พึ่งพิง และการตาย ในช่วง 3 ปี รวมทั้ง เพื่อคาดประมาณประชากรจำแนกตามสถานะทางสุขภาพ จนถึง พ.ศ. 2579 และประเมินความเป็นไปได้ในการบรรลุเป้าหมาย เรื่องอัตราส่วนประชากรสถานะอิสระต่อประชากรสถานะพึ่งพิง ตามแผนยุทธศาสตร์ชาติระยะ 20 ปี ด้านสาธารณสุข ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ความน่าจะเป็นของการคงอยู่ในสถานะอิสระ และการคงอยู่ในสถานะพึ่งพิง จะมีแนวโน้มลดลงเมื่ออายุเพิ่มขึ้น ในขณะที่ความน่าจะเป็นของการเปลี่ยนสถานะจากอิสระเป็นพึ่งพิงกลับมีแนวโน้มเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับธรรมชาติของการเสื่อมถอยทางสุขภาพ และการเพิ่มขึ้นของความเสี่ยงในการเสียชีวิต ซึ่งสะท้อนผ่านแนวโน้มของความน่าจะเป็นในการเสียชีวิต ทั้งจากสถานะอิสระและสถานะพึ่งพิง ที่สูงขึ้นตามอายุ โดยในเชิงทฤษฎี ผลการศึกษายืนยันการดำรงอยู่ของปรากฏการณ์ความย้อนแย้งระหว่างการเจ็บป่วยและการเสียชีวิต (morbidity–mortality paradox) กล่าวคือ ประชากรเพศชายมีความน่าจะเป็นของการเสียชีวิตจากสถานะอิสระสูง แต่มีความน่าจะเป็นของการเข้าสู่สถานะพึ่งพิงต่ำ ในขณะที่ประชากรเพศหญิงแม้จะมีแนวโน้มอายุยืนยาวมากกว่า แต่ต้องใช้ชีวิตร่วมกับสถานะพึ่งพิงเป็นระยะเวลานาน นอกจากนี้ สำหรับการประเมินความเป็นไปได้ของอัตราส่วนเป้าหมาย ที่คำนวณจากประชากรคาดประมาณ พ.ศ. 2579 การศึกษาพบว่า อัตราส่วนภาพรวมทุกกลุ่มอายุที่คำนวณได้สูงกว่าเกณฑ์เป้าหมายเป็นอย่างมาก โดยเฉพาะเพศชาย อย่างไรก็ตาม ค่าที่สูงนี้อาจไม่ได้สะท้อนว่าประชากรจะมีสุขภาพดีอย่างแท้จริง เนื่องจากเป็นผลกระทบจากอัตราการเสียชีวิตที่สูง จึงส่งผลให้ตัวหารของอัตราส่วนมีค่าน้อย อีกทั้งเมื่อวิเคราะห์รายกลุ่มอายุกลับพบว่า ประชากรเพศหญิงที่มีอายุ 81 ปีขึ้นไป มีอัตราส่วนต่ำกว่าเกณฑ์เป้าหมาย ผลการศึกษานี้จึงชี้ให้เห็นถึงความสำคัญของการพิจารณารายละเอียดของประชากรอย่างถี่ถ้วน เพื่อค้นหากลุ่มประชากรที่เปราะบางทางสุขภาพ และนำไปสู่การพัฒนานโยบายสาธารณสุขที่เฉพาะเจาะจงสำหรับแต่ละกลุ่มประชากรอย่างแท้จริง

This study explores how parental status relates to childbearing decisions in the context of climate change and builds on prior research linking climate anxiety to reduced family size intentions. A survey of 114 participants revealed that non-parents were significantly more likely than parents to plan to have fewer children and to express concerns about climate change. These findings underscore differences in how parents and non-parents approach future reproductive decisions and highlight the role of climate-related concerns in shaping family planning intentions.
