In 2015, the Northern Chumash Tribal Council submitted a National Marine Sanctuary Nomination to establish the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary– a means by which to ensure the protection of one of the most culturally and biologically diverse coastlines in the world. On October 5, 2015, John Armor of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) responded to the nomination, adding it to the inventory of areas NOAA may consider in the future for national marine sanctuary designation.

We Count Oregon is the first woman-of-color-led statewide census campaign in Oregon purposefully designed to undermine exclusionary census norms. The We Count Oregon 2020 campaign reflects the values, cultures, and needs of hard-to- count communities. In Oregon, these are primarily communities of color (including Black, Asian and Pacific Islanders, Latinx, Indigenous and native communities), LGBTQI communities, children under the age of five, disabled people, rural communities, and people experiencing homelessness. The U.S. population has changed significantly since the 1950s, becoming markedly more racially diverse. Still, a large portion of America’s neighborhoods remain racially segregated – even in large, racially diverse cities, such as Philadelphia (Logan & Stults, 2011). As a result, there is a well-established body of research that has shown that residential segregation consistently produces negative effects for neighborhoods (Massey & Denton, 1993). In January 2020, Nebraska Community Foundation began working with Center for Public Affairs Research at the University of Nebraska at Omaha to co-create a survey designed to explore young people’s perceptions and perspectives of their Nebraska hometowns. Over 1,000 high school students responded to the online survey which was administered in rural communities of varying sizes and geography between January and May 2020. The results of the Youth Survey begin to reveal the priorities, values, and desires of these individuals as well as factors that may influence their decision to return to or remain in Greater Nebraska in the future. …

Prevalence Of Left-Handedness In China 2011: Small-Area Estimates, Hongwei Xu

Nationally representative survey data and small-area estimation techniques are used to assess the geographic prevalence of left-handedness in China 2011. Measures of individuals’ handedness are their self-reported dominant hand and their hand grip strength, which yield four estimates of left-handed prevalence, and these statistics are recorded at the provincial level. These estimates concord with one another. There are several geographic clusters of high-prevalence rates of left-handers located in ethnic minority-designated autonomous areas or historically revolutionary base areas, which may reflect a deep-rooted sense of defiance to authorities and promote such cultural values as individual autonomy and equality among local people.

Although abortion became legal four decades ago, Americans remain staunchly divided over its acceptability. While researchers have been interested in the factors shaping abortion attitudes, there are almost no reviews of this work. We examine the factors shaping Americans’ abortion attitudes and assess the state of published peer-reviewed articles in this area over the last 15 years. Using a mixed-methods systematic review, we analyze and critique the findings from 116 journal articles that have examined attitudes about abortion between 2001 and 2016. The homing process is the dynamic way in which people create home according to their life circumstances: food, eating, and culinary customs after migration in this case. Home is not only the place where people live, but also, where they come from and how they feel comfortable; home is both a physical space and an abstract concept. The purpose of the study was to examine what challenges Black African graduate students face when adjusting to life in the United States. A secondary concern was to examine what coping strategies were used during the transition. A qualitative approach was used to interview the participants and through coding, develop themes related to their time as graduate students.

This study concluded that there were a number of issues that Black African graduate students face. The students reported that they experienced homesickness, culture shock, and discrimination during their time at school. Specific themes also emerged as to how they coped with …

The Earth's population will become more than 80% urban during this century. This threshold is often regarded as sufficient justification for pursuing urban ecology. However, pursuit has primarily focused on building empirical richness, and urban ecology theory is rarely discussed. The Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES) has been grounded in theory since its inception and its two decades of data collection have stimulated progress toward comprehensive urban theory. Emerging urban ecology theory integrates biology, physical sciences, social sciences, and urban design, probes interdisciplinary frontiers while being founded on textbook disciplinary theories, and accommodates surprising empirical results. การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา 1) สถานการณ์การทำงานต่ำระดับ 2) ปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อการทำงานต่ำระดับ และ 3) การเข้าสู่การทำงานต่ำระดับและการปรับตัวของประชากรวัยแรงงานและประชากรสูงวัย โดยใช้การวิจัยแบบผสมผสานรูปแบบคู่ขนานเข้าหากัน การวิจัยเชิงปริมาณได้รับความอนุเคราะห์ข้อมูลโครงการสำรวจแรงงานนอกระบบ จากสำนักงานสถิติแห่งชาติ ได้กลุ่มตัวอย่าง 49,394 คน ส่วนการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพใช้การสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกจากกรณีตัวอย่าง 40 คน ครอบคลุม 5 ภูมิภาค ได้แก่ กรุงเทพมหานคร ภาคเหนือ ภาคกลาง ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ และภาคใต้ การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลใช้สถิติพรรณนาและสถิติอนุมานร่วมกับข้อค้นพบจากการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า การทำงานต่ำระดับของประชากรวัยแรงงานและประชากรสูงวัยกระจายตัวอยู่ในทุกภูมิภาคทั่วประเทศไทยทั้งด้านเวลา ด้านการศึกษา และด้านรายได้ โดยมีผู้ทำงานต่ำระดับมากกว่า 1 ด้านในลักษณะซับซ้อนและซ้ำซ้อน และการวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตัวแปรด้วยแบบจำลองโพรบิทพบว่า ในภาพรวมนั้น ปัจจัยซึ่งมีผลต่อการทำงานต่ำระดับทั้ง 3 ด้าน ได้แก่ สถานภาพสมรส สถานะการจ้างงาน ประเภทอาชีพ ประเภทอุตสาหกรรม ภูมิภาคที่อยู่อาศัย ในขณะที่ปัจจัยที่มีผลเฉพาะด้านการศึกษาและด้านรายได้ ได้แก่ รุ่น เพศ จำนวนปีที่ศึกษา ปัจจัยที่มีผลเฉพาะด้านเวลาและด้านการศึกษา ได้แก่ รายได้ และปัจจัยที่มีผลเฉพาะด้านรายได้ ได้แก่ เขตการปกครอง การเข้าสู่การทำงานต่ำระดับนั้นมีสาเหตุหลักและสาเหตุรองประกอบกันในลักษณะที่แตกต่างกันไป โดยอาจจัดการประกอบกันได้ 5 กลุ่ม ดังนี้ 1) การรักษาสมดุลระหว่างการทำงานกับการดูแลครอบครัวประกอบกับความไม่พึงพอใจในงานเดิม 2) การรักษาสมดุลระหว่างการทำงานกับการดูแลครอบครัวประกอบกับปัญหาสุขภาพ 3) การไม่สามารถหางานที่เหมาะสมได้ประกอบกับสาเหตุรองด้านความไม่พึงพอใจในงานเดิม ครอบครัวมีภาระหนี้สิน การออกจากระบบการศึกษากลางคัน สภาพภูมิอากาศที่ไม่เอื้อต่อการทำงาน ข้อจำกัดในการหางานเมื่อมีอายุมากขึ้น 4) ความพึงพอใจในงานประกอบกับสาเหตุรองด้านความไม่พึงพอใจในงานเดิม การมีปัญหาสุขภาพ ครอบครัวมีภาระหนี้สิน และ 5) ความพึงพอใจในงานประกอบกับปัญหาสุขภาพ ทั้งนี้ ภายหลังเข้าสู่การทำงานต่ำระดับพบการปรับตัวของทั้งประชากรวัยแรงงานและประชากรสูงวัยใน 2 ลักษณะ คือ 1) การไม่ปรับตัว และ 2) การปรับตัวด้านจิตใจ ด้านการทำงาน ด้านเศรษฐกิจ และด้านสังคม รวมถึงพบการปรับตัวของบุคคลใกล้ชิด ได้แก่ ครอบครัว เพื่อนร่วมงาน นายจ้าง อย่างไรก็ตาม เมื่อพ้นช่วงการปรับตัวนั้น ทั้งประชากรวัยแรงงานและประชากรสูงวัยยังมีความเสี่ยงต่อเนื่องทั้งด้านการทำงานและการดำรงชีวิต ดังนั้น …

Every United States census has challenges ensuring that every person responds and is counted. Individuals who are missed in the census count or “undercounted” for various reasons are often referred to as “hard-to-count” populations. Hard-to-count populations include rural residents, people of color, immigrants, people experiencing homelessness, children under age five, renters, and more.

Entering the planet’s sixth mass-extinction, monitoring biodiversity and the factors which affect it is of the utmost importance. This study on the interaction of humans and their livestock with wildlife, and the impact of this interaction on wildlife conservation, took place in Santiago Coatepec, located within the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve in Mexico. Wildlife interactions with livestock may depend upon species, season, ecological characteristics of the area, and livestock management practices. Using camera traps, field data, and interview data, I quantified livestock impact on wildlife behavior and community beliefs. In this brief, authors Kenneth Johnson, Dante Scala, and Andrew Smith discuss demographic forces that are reshaping the New Hampshire landscape. They report that more than 20 percent of potential voters in the 2020 New Hampshire primary were either not old enough to vote in 2016 or resided somewhere other than New Hampshire. New Hampshire has one of the most mobile populations in the nation. Only one-third of New Hampshire residents age 25 and older were born in the state. While the population of the United States has been predominantly urban for nearly 100 years, periodic transformations of the concepts and measures that define urban places and population have taken place, complicating over-time comparisons. We compare and combine data series of officially-designated urban areas, 1990–2010, at the census block-level within Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) with a satellite-derived consistent series on built-up area from the Global Human Settlement Layer to create urban classes that characterize urban structure and provide estimates of land and population. Introduction: This report studies income distribution in the United States between 1967 and 2018 by race and ethnicity.

Methods: The data were derived from the US Census Bureau's Historical Income Tables: Income Inequality

Results: The upper 5% of households controlled 17% of total household income in 1967 and 23% in 2018. The upper 20% of households accounted for 44% of all income in 1967 and 52% in 2018. Economic growth, which has been impressive in the period under consideration, did not result in rising household incomes across the social hierarchy. In this brief, author Kenneth Johnson reports that New Hampshire gained 40,000 residents (a 3 percent increase) between 2010 and 2018, and the population reached 1,356,458 on July 1, 2018, according to the Census Bureau. Population gains in New Hampshire have diminished over time, though growth has recently picked up. Migration is the biggest driver of population change, and the pattern of demographic change is uneven across the state. Volunteering at community events could be associated with length of community tenure as residents with longer years of “tenure” might have a greater sense of community belonging, greater social capital (e.g. social networks and trust), and greater familiarity with regional cultures, compared to new residents. Using the Metro Atlanta Speaks survey conducted in 2015 and 2016, this study finds that residents’ volunteering at community events is significantly and positively associated with their length of community tenure in metro Atlanta counties. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a free, easily accessible screener ideal for rural areas where resources are limited. We examined administration and scoring by Veteran Community Outreach Health Workers (VCOHWs); compared positive screening rates using two cutoff scores; and examined predictors of education-adjusted scores in N = 168 rural military Veterans from the Alabama Veteran Rural Health Initiative. Accuracy of administration (95 percent) and scoring (68 percent) was calculated and recommendations are offered.
