Population Regulation In Wolves, Jane M. Packard, L. David Mech Jan 1980

Population Regulation In Wolves, Jane M. Packard, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The possibility of social regulation of wolf populations has been discussed in the literature for several years. Some of the first ecological studies of wolves indicated that their populations did not increase as rapidly as was theoretically possible, and that they reached a saturation point apparently not set by food. Subsequent captive studies demonstrated the existence of social mechanisms possibly capable of regulating population growth. However, the importance of these factors in wild populations has not been established. This paper has four objectives: (1) to evaluate the existing concept of "intrinsic limitation," (2) to propose that wolf population dynamics may …

Jacksonville, An Energy Efficient City?, Jacksonville Community Council, Inc. Jan 1980

Jacksonville, An Energy Efficient City?, Jacksonville Community Council, Inc.

Jacksonville Community Council, Inc.

In the fall of 1979 the Energy Study Committee received its charge: "Moving Toward an Energy Efficient Jacksonville- how should Jacksonville approach this problem?" This report examines the energy situation to ascertain whether crisis conditions really exist. In the broadest terms, this means a close look at two things: supplies and consumption. The report is limited to the examination of the availability and consumption of oil in both the nation and Jacksonville in the short term (the next 5 years), and in the long term (the next 20 years), for the fueling of the transportation system and for the generation …

Wolf Howling And Its Role In Territory Maintenance, Fred H. Harrington, L. David Mech Jan 1979

Wolf Howling And Its Role In Territory Maintenance, Fred H. Harrington, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The wolf (Canis lupus) is a wide-ranging social carnivore with a complex spatial organization (MECH, 1972; 1973). The precise manner in which this organization is maintained is unknown, but territory advertisement using olfactory and acoustic modes seems to be involved.

The acoustic mode includes primarily howling. Within a wolf pack, howling may be useful to reassemble separated members (MECH, 1966; THEBERGE & FALLS, 1967), and may communicate information on individual identity, location, and other behavioral and environmental contingencies (THEBERGE & FALLS, 1967). Between packs, however, howling may serve to advertise territory, communicating the locations of packs and thus …

The United Nations Environment Programme, Norman Miller Jan 1979

The United Nations Environment Programme, Norman Miller

Dartmouth Scholarship

It was once described as a part of the "quiet side" of the United Nations family, one of those organizations that did good works but rarely made headlines. Times have changed. Today the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, has come into prominence, not because of UN cliches about "spaceship earth," but because a great many ordinary people have come to realize they could be physically harmed by environmental hazards. The common man" in industrial states has begun to worry about the environment in respect to his health and the health of his children. He is asking …

Oklahoma's Energy Extension Service Program -- Past, Present And Future, John W. Willis Jr.

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The U. S. Department of Energy's Plan for a nationwide Energy Extension Service (EES) provides a genuine opportunity for states to establish a positive energy outreach program. Monitoring The Pilot Energy Extension Service Program, Owen D. Osborne Oct 1978

Monitoring The Pilot Energy Extension Service Program, Owen D. Osborne

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

This paper briefly describes the 18 month Energy Extension Service (EES) program currently being conducted on a pilot basis in 10 states and provides the author's view of the problems and successes of the program to date. The EES is intended to implement energy conservation measures and to encourage the use of renewable energy sources by providing direct, personalized assistance to small energy consumers. Small energy consumers are defined as residential energy consumers, small businesses and agricultural operations, schools, hospitals and state and local governments. The program also addresses groups that influence energy use such as architects, bankers, and builders. …

Ambient Air Quality As Related To Energy Conversion Facilities, Economic Activity And Population, Walter P. Page

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The paper examines the relationships between ambient air quality and energy conversion facilities, economic activity and population. Additional results are presented from investigation of the relationship between ambient air quality and total emissions from four source categories.

Some Problems With Economic Models Involving Air Pollution, John Hoag, J. David Reed

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

In this paper we consider how economic models have interfaced with environmental problems in three areas: optimal air quality standards, pollution control policy and growth with pollution. The focus is on what has been done and what should be done.
