The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

THIS FIRST NUMBER of the ninth volume of THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY begins a new year with-somewhat to her surprise- a somewhat new editor. During a summer leave or a sabbatical absence of Professor Cornish, it is true, she has sometimes stepped in, has chewed pencils, checked copy, struggled with an engulfing correspondence, written forewords and afterwords, read proof, worried with subscriptions and copyright and the multifarious details involved in any publication, and all the while has rejoiced rather too audibly in the prospect of a speedy release. She still tends to think of herself as …

The Logic Of United States Aid To Latin America, Robert Kenneth Godwin Sep 1967

The Logic Of United States Aid To Latin America, Robert Kenneth Godwin

Political Science ETDs

Since the inauguration of the Alliance for progress five years ago, there has ben an increasing number of coupe d’état in Latin America. Governments have been overthrown in Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador, Argentina, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras. The majority of these coups overthrow constitutionally elected left-of-center governments. It is this type of government that has been recognized by the United States government as the best suited for successfully carrying out the goals of the Alliance for Progress.

Equal Access To Justice : The Challenge And The Opportunity, Richard Lyins Korink Jul 1967

Equal Access To Justice : The Challenge And The Opportunity, Richard Lyins Korink

Master's Theses

The power to make it impossible for any man, woman or child to be denied the equal protection of the laws, because he or she is poor is an essential part of the administration of justice in a democracy. Simply by definition the indigent defendant is destitute of material possessions, but he often will also be lacking in intelligence in education, in the rudimentary social graces and in the common qualities of good behavior. Though he may be very personable and likeable, or occasionally well-educated, much more often than not, it is safe to say that the law officer who …

INDULGING natural preference and at the same time bowing to a tradition still green, the editors present their fifth Summer Literary Number. Their six major selections draw from at least three diverse literary streams: Nineteenth-century English (early and late), nineteenth-century American, and the contemporary American novel. More specifically, two articles deal with important figures in English letters: William Wordsworth, the Romantic poet who grew to estrangement from and disillusion with his native country, and Joseph Conrad, English by adoption and recognized as a superior craftsman in his second tongue by virtue of a distinguished list …

A Study Of The Proposed Richmond Coliseum, Coleman Bennett Yeatts Jr. Jun 1967

A Study Of The Proposed Richmond Coliseum, Coleman Bennett Yeatts Jr.

Master's Theses

Nearly seven years ago, representatives of Richmond’s leading cultural groups - such as Ballet Impromptu, The Children’s Theater and others - appeared before City Council to ask for assistance in the construction of a theater for the performing arts. This recent campaign to improve cultural facilities has been converted into a move to make Richmond one of the South's leading basketball cities as well as a major meeting place for large conventions. This move is to be the building of one of, if not, the finest Coliseums in the country.

Presidential Decision Making., Cary A. Fisher May 1967

Presidential Decision Making., Cary A. Fisher

Political Science ETDs

This is a study of the way a President of the United States makes decisions in public policy. Because all decisions made by the President are not the same, the various categories of these decisions and the way a President approaches these decisions will be outlined in the first chapter.

This thesis is concerned with a single case study, the decision by President Harry S. Truman to authorize the building and development of the hydrogen bomb. The hydrogen bomb problem affords excellent material for investigating Presidential decision making primarily because key Presidential advisors, congressmen, and administrators had strong feelings either …
