Between Religion And Politics: The Case Of The Islamic Movement In Israel, Suheir Abu Oksa Daoud
Between Religion And Politics: The Case Of The Islamic Movement In Israel, Suheir Abu Oksa Daoud
Political Science
The power of the “moderate” branch of the Islamic Movement (Alharaka al-Islamiyya, subsequently referred to as IM) Southern Faction (IMSF) in Israel stems from its ability to adapt to different situations, reconcile with the complex reality of being an indigenous minority in a state that defines itself a “Jewish state”, and operate within the state structure accepting democratic processes that have long been debated to clash with Islamism. Besides being represented in the Israeli Knesset since 1996, the culmination of this adaptation was the joining of the movement to the short-lived Zionist coalition government on 2 June 2021 (the government …
Tax Salience, Escrow, And Support For Property Tax: Findings From A Survey Of South Carolina Voters, Susan Young, Matthew P. Thornburg, David Wilson Steinmeyer
Tax Salience, Escrow, And Support For Property Tax: Findings From A Survey Of South Carolina Voters, Susan Young, Matthew P. Thornburg, David Wilson Steinmeyer
Journal of Political Science
Tax salience has been found to impact tax opposition attitudes in a previous study, and scholars find that tax presentation is a key factor influencing the salience of a tax to those who pay it. We test Cabral and Hoxby’s 2012 hypothesis that homeowners who escrow their property tax payments will express more support for property tax increases than non-escrow taxpayers. Using original data collected from a mailed survey of South Carolina voters our multi-variate regression analysis shows that homeowners who escrow property taxes express more support for increasing school tax than do non-escrow payers. We also find significant knowledge …
Black Lives Matter And The Effects Of A Social Media User's Connection To Differing Ethnic And Racial Backgrounds, Ashley Helfrich, Satoshi Machida
Black Lives Matter And The Effects Of A Social Media User's Connection To Differing Ethnic And Racial Backgrounds, Ashley Helfrich, Satoshi Machida
Journal of Political Science
Millions of citizens, including a large number of whites, joined the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in the summer of 2020. An important factor that mobilized them toward BLM was the rise of social media. Recognizing the critical importance of social media, the present research explores the link between social media use and citizens’ behavior on the BLM movement in the United States. The focus of the analysis is on the issue of diversity. Because diversity on social networks can expose individuals to more diverse views, one can hypothesize that a higher number of one’s "friends" and followers being from …
Campaigning During Covid-19: How Texas Republicans Navigated The 2020 Election, Jeff Hunter, Mike Wintemute, Bryan Mclaughlin
Campaigning During Covid-19: How Texas Republicans Navigated The 2020 Election, Jeff Hunter, Mike Wintemute, Bryan Mclaughlin
Journal of Political Science
The COVID-19 pandemic caused major disruptions to political campaigns during the 2020 election. There was a stark contrast between how the two major parties approached campaigning during COVID-19, including the election in Texas, a deep red state that some thought might present opportunities for Democratic Party candidates. Using interviews with 13 campaign operatives, this study examines how Republican candidates in Texas navigated their campaigns in the context of a pandemic. Our results suggest the unique context of campaigning during COVID-19 gave Republicans key advantages over Democrats. Decisions to embrace a more organic, bottom-up approach led to more flexible campaign strategies. …
Celebrity Politics In The American South: The Case Of Ben "Cooter" Jones, Richard T. Longoria
Celebrity Politics In The American South: The Case Of Ben "Cooter" Jones, Richard T. Longoria
Journal of Political Science
Celebrities get involved in American politics as activists and candidates for office. The literature suggests that celebrities have many advantages over traditional political candidates. However, the case of Ben Jones, "Cooter" from The Dukes of Hazzard, suggests that fame is not enough to win elections. The political environment is the decisive factor in determining whether a celebrity candidate wins or loses an election. The South’s realignment from Democrat to Republican made it difficult for Democrat Ben Jones to succeed in a changing South. Like other celebrities that lost the fundraising battle Jones lost several bids for office. Celebrities, like Fred …
Predicting Our Own Demise: How Media Has Played Nostradamus To The Future Of Artificial Intelligence, Connor Denny-Lybbert
Predicting Our Own Demise: How Media Has Played Nostradamus To The Future Of Artificial Intelligence, Connor Denny-Lybbert
Honors Theses
In this paper, I argue that we should be hesitant and skeptical of the applications of AI technology in government due to the possibility of, and ongoing abuses of this technology by political actors. I do this by first analyzing various pieces of sci-fi media in three parts: how this media approaches crime and punishment, personhood, and human happiness. Then, I explain how these themes intersect with the above framework and how we can use the themes to guide future policy. This is followed by an analysis of what these pieces of media tell us regarding artificial intelligence and how …
Non-State Actors And International Crisis Outcomes, 1987-2017, Taylor Schubert
Non-State Actors And International Crisis Outcomes, 1987-2017, Taylor Schubert
Undergraduate Research Competition
This study examines the way non-state actor involvement affects the outcome of international crises. This was tested by looking at a set of international crises from 1987 through 2017. We find that the involvement of a non-state actor in an international crisis is associated with a greater likelihood of the crisis terminating via agreement or unilateral act, and a reduced likelihood of a crisis fading away. Additionally, we find that non-state actors who engage in direct fighting as a part of the crisis are further associated with negotiated and unilaterally-imposed outcomes, but that non-state actors who control territory are less …

The Impacts Of Daca On Migrant Children And Young Adults And What Actions Should Be Taken, Kylie Harris
Undergraduate Research Competition
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was presented at the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and ruled that the implementation of the program was illegal. Over the past 10 years DACA has affected it’s recipients and their families in many ways. It is a positive force for the recipients, their families, as well as the United States’ economy. Although, with the uncertainty between presidential offices and politics surrounding the program, it has impaired the community. The statistics provided is data based on DACA recipients from Mexico between the ages of 18-30 as they make up about 80% of …
Feminism And Women's Representation In Argentina, Devyn Murphy
Feminism And Women's Representation In Argentina, Devyn Murphy
Honors Theses
The theory of feminism has proved essential in the transformation of the patriarchal society in Argentina. Feminism paved the way for the emergence of various women’s movements, such as the Encuentros and Movimiento Nacional de Mujeres. These movements redefined the roles that women could play in society. It was because of this theory, and the movements, which made the theories a practice that advanced the political rights of Argentine women.
American Political Polarization, Kristin Leonard
American Political Polarization, Kristin Leonard
Honors Theses
The United States has become politically polarized. Our political ideas have moved away from the political center and trend towards ends. Our high levels of party loyalty have opened the doors for extreme polarization. The push for party differentiation has seen the political elite widen the gap between their party ideas. The polarization of the elite has moved the parties and their voters further from the center. Television news promotes our political issues as partisan problems that villainize the other party. This leads viewers to push for further extreme ideas and to move away from the other side. The two-party …
Man In The Arena: The Evolution Of The Executive Office, Jack Sandone
Man In The Arena: The Evolution Of The Executive Office, Jack Sandone
Honors Theses
Through an historical case study, this paper will answer the question: just how powerful has the presidency become? Has it really, through various tangible tools and the evolution of institutions, become a king-like figure, rising above the vaunted Legislative and Judicial Branches? The conclusion is this: based on the precedent of “prerogative,” a term to be explained and analyzed, presidents have been granted access to extraconstitutional actions that were not outside of the purview of the founding fathers. The usage of unilateral legislation, like the executive order, creates a surgeon’s knife of a political tool, allowing presidents to force legislation …

Sustainable Planning, Protecting Social, Economic, And Environmental Interests Of Coastal Communities, Daniel O'Hara
Undergraduate Research Competition
Understanding the connection between humans and wetland environments is imperative to coastal planning. This project looks to gather policy and scientific information from local, regional, federal, and international levels regarding wetland protection and preservation to improve policies and practices in coastal areas and create more sustainable and healthier environments. Sustainable planning in coastal communities includes connecting humans and nature through low-impact developments, using native plant species, non-impervious surfaces, and adequate buffers between developments and water sources. Successful coastal planning and development can help ensure that economic, social, and conservation interests are protected. Wetlands represent 5.5% of the total land area …
Georgetown County: The Issue Of Land Litter And Pollution, Nicole Rainwater
Georgetown County: The Issue Of Land Litter And Pollution, Nicole Rainwater
Undergraduate Research Competition
Land litter and pollution are a large issue in current society. Georgetown County in South Carolina is no exception to this with excess amounts of litter lining the streets due to a lack of municipal solid waste management, and possibly a lack of education in sustainability. Litter not only harms the environment but also affects the community and its people while driving businesses and tourists away from the location. This paper aims to explore the litter issue of Georgetown County and its lack of sustainability through a litter index. To achieve this study a heat map of the land pollution …

The county of Georgetown, SC envelops lush natural landscapes and complex water systems that host a diverse network of plant and animal species. This region is continuously threatened by natural disasters like flooding and stormwater issues, which inhibit the local economy and jeopardize the well-being of its inhabitants. Within the last decade, Georgetown County has been experiencing a consistent growth in population and development, specifically in vulnerable coastal areas. This growth must be addressed in order to provide a safe and resilient place for the community and nature to live in harmony. Through a case study of my experience in a …

Should The United States Collect Intelligence On Its Close Allies?, Shannon Brophy
Should The United States Collect Intelligence On Its Close Allies?, Shannon Brophy
Honors Theses
The United States does not collect intelligence against all countries with the same intensity. Members of the so-called Five Eyes alliance—the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand— are believed to be excluded, and allegedly so is the United Arab Emirates. Should this policy continue in today’s unpredictable and fast-changing geopolitical environment? The Five Eyes alliance has given the United States an unmatched level of integration with its allies by increasing intelligence sharing between its members—but does this mean the United States should still not collect intelligence on them? Especially now that the UAE has allegedly been …
Anti-Semitism As A Political Tool Of Tyrannical Government, Bailey Gordon, Kimberly Hale
Anti-Semitism As A Political Tool Of Tyrannical Government, Bailey Gordon, Kimberly Hale
Honors Theses
Anti-Semitism has been a form of hatred and racism among movements and governmental organizations since Babylonian times. It was institutionalized however in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a form of political tool to garner support for tyrannical establishments. Although anti-Semitism has been around for centuries, it has been used more recently to rally people in a tribal-nationalistic spirit. As the populace becomes normalized to anti-Semitic beliefs, they eventually become more accepting of a tyrannical government whose policies are rooted in anti-Semitism. To appease the masses, this tyrannical government must then stay in motion. This constant …

Mao Zedong And The Cultural Revolution: In Theory And Impact, Marissa Bryan
Honors Theses
Across the globe, the 20th century witnessed several instances of tyrannical regimes and leaders; Chairman Mao Zedong was argued by many to have been one of the most merciless tyrants that this era witnessed. A founder of the Chinese Communist Party, Mao Zedong was one of the most significant and controversial political actors in the last century. Chairman Mao became the leader of the People’s Republic of China after declaring its existence in 1949, marking the beginning of both a communist regime in the East Asian territory and Mao’s tyrannical reign. Zedong can be remembered for several of his …
Tyranny Plagued The French Revolution, Christy Leigh Salinari
Tyranny Plagued The French Revolution, Christy Leigh Salinari
Honors Theses
Liberty, equality, and fraternity were the three original pillars of the French Revolution at the start in 1789. The slogan became the rallying cry for the embittered French people in their initial pursuit for political and social transformation. The French Revolution is perhaps the most prominent contemporary illustration of a violent revolution which ultimately was successful, resulting in a model of democratic government. The French Revolution reached a decade in length wherein there were countless demonstrations, massacres, wars, civil unrest, and political enlightenment. The disorganized nature of the revolution cultivated a vast array of political beliefs, which ranged from radical …
