This book is a guide to the latest research using the C-SPAN Archives. In this book, nine authors present original work using the video archives to study presidential debates, public opinion and Congress, analysis of the Violence Against Women Act and the Great Lakes freshwater legislation, as well as President Clinton’s grand jury testimony. The C-SPAN Archives contain over 220,000 hours of first run digital video of the nation’s public affairs record. These and other essays serve as guides for scholars who want to explore the research potential of this robust public policy and communications resource.

Viewing History From The Sky: Geo-Rectification Of An Aerial Photography Collection, Kate F. Boyd

After years of looking for funding, in 2013 USC Libraries was awarded a grant from the Gaylord & Donnelly Foundation to scan and geo-rectify the South Carolina historical aerial photographs from 1930-1980s. This presentation, given at the Digital Library Federation Forum in 2016, documents the efforts to receive funding and the process of bring these photographs online for users. Thanks to Bill Sudduth of Government Information for his efforts in continuing this process.

In 2014, SAA and RBMS appointed joint task forces to address the challenges that archival repositories face related to metrics and assessment. The task forces are drafting proposed metrics and standards, but calls for how to implement data gathering continue. This session will share case studies on the implementation of data gathering from the ground up, metrics and assessment in instruction and reference, and identifying the best and most efficient ways to quantify resources for assessment and decision making. The session will also address the transition from manual data gathering to tools like Aeon and LibInsight and the administrative outcomes …

The work-in-progress article explores the donation, arrangement, and description of the papers of the internationally renowned science fiction novelist and short story writer, Connie Willis, to the University of Northern Colorado. The project is ongoing at UNC, but the article provides a case study exploring the both the value of science fiction collections and the challenges presented in processing them.

The Qualitative Data Repository (QDR) provides infrastructure and guidance for the sharing and reuse of digital data used in qualitative and multi-method social inquiry. In this paper we describe some of the repository’s early experiences providing services developed specifically for the curation of qualitative research data. We focus on QDR’s efforts to address two key challenges for qualitative data sharing. The first challenge concerns constraints on data sharing in order to protect human participants and their identities and to comply with copyright laws. The second set of challenges addresses the unique characteristics of qualitative data and their relationship to the …

The Atomic Renaissance: The Emergence Of American Mystery Writers, Beth Turcy Kilmarx

The first Golden Age of Mystery was the 20 year span between the two world wars, from 1919 to 1939. Even after almost a century, its writers still remain familiar names with popular titles. What these Golden Age writers and their stories shared in common were three major themes: they each had a Great Detective in charge, who was a larger-than-life character whose deductive brain solved the murder and/or mystery, a puzzle that would stump the average person. Agatha Christie had her Hercule Poirot, Dashiell Hammett had his Nick and Nora Charles and Sam Spade, and Earle Stanley Gardener had …

The purpose of this essay is to bring together disparate information on Myers’ book collecting habits. President Myers used both the objects of his collecting and the intellectual ideas they represent in the course of his presidential responsibilities. This work offers an overview solely of this aspect of Myers’ activities, in both written records and oral histories, and is not an attempt to analyze the entire arc of Myers’ tenure.
