Review Of Algorithms Of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism, Yvonne C. Garrett

In recent years, the idea that the algorithms behind for-profit search engines are somehow neutral or unbiased has been heavily critiqued but for those who still hold onto a belief of objectivity and accuracy, Safiya Umoja Noble presents a clear and well-researched argument against such naiveté. These algorithms and the searches they drive are instead, Noble argues, a part of systemic structural oppression around race and gender. For Noble, Google Search’s algorithms are structured in a way that supports dominant narratives reflecting hegemonic frameworks and these same frameworks are an integral part of the structured oppression of women and people …

The TMC Library Historical Photograph Collection contains photographs, negatives, slides, published prints, printed materials, postcards, framed images, audiovisual materials, and a plaque. The collection consists of roughly 5300 items, which includes individual 35mm slides, 35mm negatives, 120 format negatives, photographic prints, and other printed materials. This is an artificial collection of several types of images collected by or donated to the McGovern Historical Center (MHC) through the years. The bulk of the materials date from 1940 to 1990. The Richard Wainerdi's Texas Medical Center Memorabilia Collection consists of realia (three-dimensional objects) presented to Richard Wainerdi during his tenure as president of the Texas Medical Center, a position he held from 1984 to December 2012. The realia includes numerous scrolls, fabrics, desktop items such as paper weights. pen sets, commemorative plaques, ceramic, toy-like models and other objects. The realia comes from Houston-area institutions and businesses as well as numerous international organizations. The collection was donated to the TMC Library by TMC Inc. office of the president in September 2013. See more at IC 096.

The Hermann Hospital Archive records consists of administrative records, founding documents, legal papers, maps, photographs, films, videos, oral histories, nursing school records, yearbooks, and artifacts ranging from the late 1800s to 1998 that document the creation, development, and history of Hermann Hospital, the first institution in what is now known as the Texas Medical Center. The materials document the long history of the hospital from its inception to the merger with Memorial Hospital System in 1997. The Texas Medical Center (TMC) Historical Resources Project records contain video oral histories of notable personalities associated with or visiting the TMC. Beginning in 1973, the initial group of interviews focuses on individuals involved in the founding or early days of the TMC. Later “video profiles” also include significant visitors to the TMC. Several of these feature national and international figures in cancer research on their visits to Houston. In total the collection features forty-seven unique recordings of interviews with thirty-eight different individuals. All forty-seven unique recordings have been digitized. See more at IC 084.

Online map interfaces and GIS software are means of accessing and visualizing archival holdings associated strongly with places. This article investigates the possibility of an interest among at least some archivists and historians in finding records based on place names and maps. A review of recent tools and case studies on map-based methods of seeking and visualizing information in archives and special collections provides a current overview. This article is a case study comparing three large-scale digitization projects at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries: the Culinary Union Workers Local 226 Photographs, the Nevada Digital Newspaper Project, and the Entertainment Project. The authors compare the project management, workflows, and decision-making related to the many aspects of digitizing special collections and archives materials. The projects used both outsourced vendors and in-house labor and equipment to digitize microfilmed newspapers, mixed-materials manuscript collections, and photographic prints and negatives.
