“All Stories True!”: The Nonfiction Western Magazine Collection At Boise State University, Alessandro Meregaglia, Gwyn Hervochon

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article describes the genre of specialized magazines known as “nonfiction western magazines.” These magazines focused on telling stories about the “Old West”—the nineteenth-century western United States. Joe Small founded the genre’s first magazine, True West, in 1953. Over the next thirty years, the magazine’s popularity increased and dozens of imitators were published. This article discusses the rise and decline of these magazines and also explores the magazines’ usefulness both as a source of western American history and as cultural artifacts themselves to study how the “Old West” was perceived during the period in which they were published.

Toward Inclusive Description: Reparations Through Community-Driven Metadata, Jillian M. Ewalt

This case study covers the process and policies involved in creating accurate and inclusive metadata for a historically marginalized community. The Japanese American Digitization Project was a consortial, collaborative digitization project with the goal of unifying and providing online access to tens of thousands of archival materials documenting the Japanese American experience. Traditionally, the Japanese American experience, particularly the internment during World War II, has been laden with euphemistic language. This article outlines community-driven metadata development, implementing an inclusive controlled vocabulary, and thinking about archival metadata as a process that can contribute to reparations.

This collection of “cartulinas de amor” represents a little studied aspect of post-revolutionary Mexican culture and middle class ideals. These images and texts show the intimate part of society, the changing mores, views of family, home and society. The collection affords the opportunity to view many disciplines, including portrait photography, art, intimacy, love, courtship, family, family relationships, class and gender.

The collection consists of postcards that date from 1908 to the 1940s with the majority in the teens, 1920s and 1930s. Most are photographic portraits of anonymous subjects, while others feature songs, poems, or portraits of celebrities such as Lupe …

The Living Archive In The Anthropocene, Nora Almeida, Jen Hoyer

This paper presents the concept of the living archive as a system which reflects how social behavior and cultural production are part of the Anthropocene. The authors explore how dominant narratives of both the Anthropocene and the archive work to consolidate power and maintain cultural and disciplinary divisions. The authors refute conceptions of the Anthropocene as a purely biophysical phenomenon that is alienated from cultural practice and of the archive as a comprehensive and nostalgic space. They then introduce the living archive as an alternative representational, creative, and reactive space and illustrate how the living archive can intervene in ecological …

Senior Theses

This senior thesis project involved working with an unprocessed collection from the Manuscripts Collection of the South Caroliniana Library. The collection (which mainly consists of two diary volumes) documents Claude Henry Neuffer’s service in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. The goal of this thesis was to aid in the processing and digitization of this collection through the creation of full transcripts, a map, and a narrative description of the collection. This work will help to preserve the collection, improve accessibility to future researchers, and provide additional historical context.

This poster outlines how visual literacy instruction was integrated into an undergraduate course on archival and primary source research at the University of Dayton. It covers partnerships with instruction librarians and archivists, course structure, hands-on activities utilizing archival images, and assessment. The Texas Hadassah Medical Research Foundation consists of one scrapbook and a recorded interview/conversation with Debbie Goldberg that document the work of the organization, which was part of Baylor College of Medicine during the late-1990s and early 2000s. The organization, led in part by Dr. Armin Weinberg, provided medical supplies, cross-cultural collaboration and professional exchanges with Israel, Palestine, Kazakhstan, Russia, and other nations. An important part of its work dealt with radiation effects and events, like Chernobyl and atomic test sites in Kazakhstan. The collection consists of 2525 items and includes photographic prints, aerial photographs, negatives, transparencies and printed materials. The materials depict the institutions of the TMC, their staff, facilities, services, and patient care. Images show buildings and their construction as well as some photographic copies of architectural renderings. The Memorial Hospital Photograph Collection contains 4039 photographic prints and negatives from 1903 to 1976 that chronicle the long history of the Memorial Hospital System (originally Baptist Sanitarium and Hospital). The photographs depict the staff, physicians, personnel, departments, nursing school students, faculty and Lillie Jolly (director), facilities and building construction of the Memorial Hospital System. The earliest dated photograph is the only nitrate negative (P-3387). It depicts Louisville Male High School graduating class of 1903, which includes Roger Jolly. It is in good condition. Archivists have included relationship information as a component of contextual and content description; however, they have not been called on to formalize that information. Rather, relationships have been identified and defined through informal narrative contexts, and depend on the archivist’s interpretative work and determination. Additionally, descriptive standards provide little guidance on the explicit description of relationships. To begin to address these issues, a group of archivists gathered in Boston to explore the challenges and opportunities in describing relationships.
