Female Labor Force Participation In Argentina, 1980-2003: Gendered Trends And Responses To Crisis, Natalie Butterfield
Female Labor Force Participation In Argentina, 1980-2003: Gendered Trends And Responses To Crisis, Natalie Butterfield
Scripps Senior Theses
How do the experiences of women in the labor market differ from the experiences of men? Do economic crises affect their labor market decisions differently? Economists have investigated the responses of women to specific moments of crisis in Argentina – the country lends itself well to this analysis, as the last three decades of its history have seen both economic growth and financial collapse. With the crisis literature in mind, I investigate trends in female labor force participation rates in Argentina between 1980-2003, finding that while some evidence supports the “added worker effect” hypothesis, more research must be done to …
Does Gender Inequality In Education Affect Educational Outcomes?, Kevin Sheehan
Does Gender Inequality In Education Affect Educational Outcomes?, Kevin Sheehan
Honors Scholar Theses
There is little doubt that education has a major effect on economic growth. Studies have traditionally used years of schooling (a quantitative variable) to measure education, but there has a shift towards using qualitative measures of education when trying to test the relationship between education and growth. In fact, there is strong evidence that the quality of education is much more important for economic growth than the quantity of education. The best way to measure the quality of education in a given country is to measure educational outcomes, and the best way to measure outcomes across countries is to look …
Managerial Turnover In The English Premier League And The Subsequent Results, Jarrod Connally
Managerial Turnover In The English Premier League And The Subsequent Results, Jarrod Connally
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Efficient productivity often relies upon the matching of managerial skills and the resources available for production. Often, poor production outcomes can be attributed to those not directly involved in the production: the managers. Similarly, poor results in professional sports are often attributed to the men and women who never play a minute of a game: the managers/coaches. Managers are routinely blamed for performance and are often the first change an owner or a club will make to improve results. This paper will attempt to determine the performance effects of changing a club’s manager in soccer’s English Premier League (EPL). Further, …
The Effects Of Foreign Direct Investment On Sovereign Debt Sustainability In Latin America, Oriana I. Fuentes
The Effects Of Foreign Direct Investment On Sovereign Debt Sustainability In Latin America, Oriana I. Fuentes
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Sovereign debt has been a central political issue in Latin American nations for many years, especially considering the region’s long history of defaults and restructurings. Finding ways to grow sustainably at manageable levels of indebtedness has certainly been a challenge, especially with the large number of factors that play into how a nation finances itself and its growth. One of these factors, foreign direct investment (FDI), has attracted significant attention after countries became more politically stable and protective of investor interests in the early 1990s. As a result, inflows of FDI have grown at record levels reaching over $112 billion …
Beyond Race Cards In America's Pastime: An Appreciative Reply To Findlay And Santos, Robert Muñoz
Beyond Race Cards In America's Pastime: An Appreciative Reply To Findlay And Santos, Robert Muñoz
Chicano/Latino Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this reply, I salute the correction, replication, and extensions carried out by David Findlay and John Santos (2012) based on my jointly authored paper Hewitt, Muñoz, Oliver, and Regoli (2005). I expound briefly on why, even though we and they have found no statistically significant race-discrimination effect in baseball card prices, we should not be quick to diminish the role of racial thinking and racial preference—especially as the sample was restricted to Hall of Famers.
The Settlers Of Catan And A Study Of Trade In Non-Cooperative Games, Dmitriy Ioselevich
The Settlers Of Catan And A Study Of Trade In Non-Cooperative Games, Dmitriy Ioselevich
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Free trade has long been hailed as the world’s answer to increased competitiveness, greater overall wealth and a higher standard of living. Adam Smith’s ideas on the foundations of capitalism assert that open market policies lead to global economic growth, and conversely that protectionist measures stunt growth and inflate prices. Critics argue that protectionism helps protect developing markets and industries and prevents unfair competition. But in the debate over trade which economic policy is actually best?
To answer this question I conducted an experiment using the board game, The Settlers of Catan, as an economic model. I isolated trade …
Simple Ecosystem Service Valuation Can Impact National Forest Management, David E. Ervin, Gary Larsen, Craig Shinn
Simple Ecosystem Service Valuation Can Impact National Forest Management, David E. Ervin, Gary Larsen, Craig Shinn
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
This essay is about how a relatively simple application of the ‘new scarcity’ paradigm for non-market ecosystem services (Simpson, Toman and Ayres 2005) changed the management plan for a national forest. We identify lessons from our experience for AERE members.
A Study Of The Determinants Of Transfer Fees For French Ligue 1 Soccer Players, Reid Barrett Taylor
A Study Of The Determinants Of Transfer Fees For French Ligue 1 Soccer Players, Reid Barrett Taylor
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
In light of the increasing flow of millions of dollars into the sports industry during the last two decades, notably the international soccer market, the repercussions from the wave of economic activity have come under scrutiny by economists. In France alone, while the real Gross Domestic Product for the country has grown at an annualized rate of 2.75%, the soccer industry in France has experienced a 500% growth in ticket sales, 3,300% growth in sponsorship income, 122,000% increase in income from television contracts overall during the same time period (Bourg and Gouget, 2005). Sports have become such a pivotal facet …
The Effects Of Property Rights On Ocean Resources: Two Possible Solutions To The Tragedy Of The Commons, Nathan David Miller
The Effects Of Property Rights On Ocean Resources: Two Possible Solutions To The Tragedy Of The Commons, Nathan David Miller
Honors Program Theses
Property rights affect how people use resources. Enforcement regimes are able to set clear laws with well-defined property rights. Governments set laws for conservation and economic success. Ocean resources suffer from overuse. Industry and the environment both benefit from regulations that promote ocean conservation. This paper will analyze how the current state of ocean property rights leads to the depletion of ocean resources. Though there are many possible solutions to overfishing, I will analyze two potential solutions to overexploitation in the commercial fishing industry: marine protected areas (MP As) and individual transferable quotas (ITQs ). A synthesis of previous research …
The Health Care Debate And Health Care Coverage In The U.S. A. Today, Antonio Giraldi
The Health Care Debate And Health Care Coverage In The U.S. A. Today, Antonio Giraldi
Honors Theses
The health care system in the United State has struggled during the past few decades. This has been accompanied by many controversies and debates among U.S. policy makers and health insurance providers. Dissatisfaction with health care in the United States today can be divided into three main aspects of health care; coverage, cost, and quality. The first problem, coverage, is a major issue because about 15 percent of the population of the U.S. (45 million) is uninsured today. The first and second problems, coverage and cost, are somewhat related since the rising cost of obtaining health services is one of …
Does Information Lead To Household Electricity Conservation?, Devon M. Kristiansen
Does Information Lead To Household Electricity Conservation?, Devon M. Kristiansen
Economics Honors Projects
This paper estimates the effect of information on residential electricity consumption. Household reading expenditure, education level of the household head, and state “green” electricity pricing program participation rate represent the probability that a household has encountered information relating the carbon emission externalities of energy consumption and human-driven climate change. Reading expenditure has a significant negative effect on household electricity consumption. Initial increases in educational attainment increase electricity consumption, but education beyond high school reduces it. The predicted social norm effect of green pricing participation is insignificant.

Infidelity, Jealousy, And Wife Abuse Among Tsimane Forager-Farmers: Testing Evolutionary Hypotheses Of Marital Conflict, Jonathan Stieglitz, Michael Gurven, Hillard Kaplan, Jeffrey Winking
ESI Publications
What causes marital conflict, and which marital conflicts are more likely to result in men’s violence against their wives? It has long been argued that men’s jealousy over women’s infidelity is the strongest impetus to men’s lethal and non-lethal violence against female partners. Less is known about the extent to which women’s jealousy over men’s infidelity precipitates men’s violence against female partners. Husbands are more likely than wives to commit infidelity, and men and women report a similar frequency and intensity of jealous emotions during recalls of potential infidelity. If men are likely to use time and resources for pursuit …
The Steady-State Economy As A Solution To The World’S Problems: A Theoretical Examination Of The Greatest Environmental Problem Facing Human Society, Brianna L. Besch
The Steady-State Economy As A Solution To The World’S Problems: A Theoretical Examination Of The Greatest Environmental Problem Facing Human Society, Brianna L. Besch
The Macalester Review
This paper is a theoretical exploration of the questioning, if you were given a magic power to solve one, and only one, of the worlds problem outlined by a classic environmental author, which would you solve, and why? While the field of environmental studies is relatively new, since the publishing of Malthus’ An Essay on the Principles of Population environmental scholars have been debating what should be considered the greatest environmental problem facing humanity. This paper explains how the creation of a steady-state economy to replace our current economic system, as described by Herman Daly, offers a holistic solution to …
The Impact Of The American Recovery And Reinvestment Plan On The Job Market, Matthew Schur
The Impact Of The American Recovery And Reinvestment Plan On The Job Market, Matthew Schur
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This paper will investigate the impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act on the job market. The ARRA, also known as the Stimulus or the Recovery Act, is a stimulus package that was passed by the 111th United States Congress in February 2009 and signed into law on the 17th of February by President Barack Obama. The primary focus of this bill was to save and create jobs in response to the 2000’s recession that our economy faced. We will evaluate impact of the ARRA by using the latest census bureau data of each state and regression analysis. Our …
The Effect Of Homeownership On Household Savings In The United States, Jacquelyn Ammirato
The Effect Of Homeownership On Household Savings In The United States, Jacquelyn Ammirato
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This paper examines the effect of changes in house prices on the saving patterns of households in the United States of America. The paper uses data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. Three empirical models are run, one for 2009, one for 2005 and one for 1999 data, to account for differences in household income, age of the head of household, employment status, and mortgage information. The results indicate that whether the home is owned or rented has a significant impact on household savings in each year.
Gender Discrimination: What Factors Influence The Level Of Gender Discrimination Facing U.S. Workers?, Joshua Ballance
Gender Discrimination: What Factors Influence The Level Of Gender Discrimination Facing U.S. Workers?, Joshua Ballance
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This paper uses previous research conducted by the author which analyzes gender discrimination at the state level. Using state level discrimination coefficients, this paper looks to analyze why discrimination varies significantly across the United States. The empirical model is constructed using a panel data set over the past twenty years to develop a model that explains why variations in the level of gender discrimination faced by U.S. workers has persisted despite the fact that the level of gender discrimination has decreased over this period.
Offshoring And The Effects On American It Workers, Kristen Bousquet
Offshoring And The Effects On American It Workers, Kristen Bousquet
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This paper will use an existing model from Amiti and Wei (2009) to illustrate the potentially positive effects that offshoring will have on the productivity of American IT workers and the IT industry. The inputs that will be used to measure productivity are labor, capital, materials, service inputs, and the offshoring of materials and services and were collected from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Based on a previous study from Amiti and Wei (2009), the results may suggest that there is a positive correlation from offshoring and productivity.
The Environmental Kuznets: For High, Middle And Low Income Latin American Countries, Allia Afifi
The Environmental Kuznets: For High, Middle And Low Income Latin American Countries, Allia Afifi
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This paper investigates the relationship between environmental quality and economic development through the use of the Environmental Kuznets Curve. The study will examine the effect of economic development on the environmental quality for selected high, middle and low income Latin American countries. The model will look at emission levels (CO2 emissions in metric tons per capita) in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Columbia, Honduras and Nicaragua as affected by changes in Gross Domestic Product. The results show that there is an inverted U-shaped curve representing the relationship between environmental degradation (CO2 emissions per capita) and GDP per capita, supporting the EKC hypothesis.

An Analysis On The Factors Affecting Fertility Rates Across The U.S., Britany St. Sauveur
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This paper analyzes the fertility rate or the number of live births per 1,000 women aged 15-44 years old. The research is based off of census data from the Statistical Abstract of the United States from 1990 to 2009. The purpose of researching fertility and birth rates is to explain the slight fluctuations during this time frame. This study looks into the factors as to why this change has occurred, such as race, education, marital status, economic impact, age, and region. The results from over the past 20 years have proven that these demographic and geographic factors have both affected …
Education And Income Inequality In Latin American Countries, Courtney Weiss
Education And Income Inequality In Latin American Countries, Courtney Weiss
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
It is a common theory that education levels and inequality are highly correlated. In layman’s terms, as access to education increases, the earning potential of the poor also increases. Therefore, the poverty gap shrinks. However, when access to education is limited, there is a greater disparity between the earning potential of the rich and that of the poor, thereby expanding the poverty gap. The following paper examines and compares the education levels and income inequality across 14 Latin American countries. These countries experience “persistent” and “pervasive” inequality impacting all aspects of life (de Ferranti et al., 2004). Inequality will be …
Pigs Debt Crisis: Macroeconomic Factors, David Fiorino
Pigs Debt Crisis: Macroeconomic Factors, David Fiorino
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
Italy’s public debt has seen large increases over the past few years, and as a result they were bailed out by other European Union members. Either their large trade deficits, inability to stimulate growth, or lack of tax revenues are all reason why Italy has fallen to such crisis. Other countries in the EU such as Portugal, Spain, and Greece have had similar debt problems and received a bailout as well. This paper will attempt to explain the relationship between the public debt to GDP ratio and some macroeconomic conditions using panel data from 1990 to 2010 for the countries …

Crime Rate In Massachusetts Cities: Has The Negative Economy Affected This?, Karissa Guerette
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This review concentrates on the relationship between the effects the downturned economy has had on the crime rate. The paper examines specifically Massachusetts cities unemployment rate and average income, along with education level. With the financial crisis starting in 2008, this paper will take a look 2010, a couple years after the peak of the recession. The results show the increasing crime rates are positively related to the change of times with the economy leading to unemployment and lower income level.

Social And Economic Factors Leading To Differences In Us State Unemployment, Taylor Neighbours
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This paper dives into the socio-economic factors that lead to differences in U.S. State unemployment rates. The study will look at and evaluate prior economic literature, including regression analysis, comparative statistics, and raw data from the BLS and Census Bureau. Further, it will take select parts from past models to create and analyze an economic regression model. The data to be found below is a cross-sectional interpretation of each of the 50 states for the years 2000 & 2010. The root causes for fluctuations in unemployment can help economists better understand how to monitor and manage unemployment levels on a …

Correlation Between Economic Factors And High-Technology Export In Asia-Pacific Nations, Jiyan Hu
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This paper investigates the correlation between high-tech exports in Asian-Pacific nations and the economic effects in term of economic growth. Some economic factors will be highlighted in this paper, such as foreign direct investment inflow, R&D expenditure, country openness as well as gross saving. The model will explain some economic factors are the key to determinant the volume of the high-tech export in Asian-Pacific nations. In order to understand the model and interpretation of each factor, high-tech export per worker will be targeted as a dependent variable. This paper will include data from 1997 to 2007 and it will be …

Does Money Matter? An Empirical Analysis On The Effects Of Campaign Financing In Recent Senatorial Elections, Joseph Cunningham
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This empirical analysis quantifies political science variables and tests to see if the sources of campaign finance money matters and ultimately determines the most important factors affecting a candidate’s chances of becoming elected. Using data from the 2004 and 2010 Senate elections, this paper tests the importance of a number of political science variables including party affiliation, sources of campaign financing, and incumbency, among others. The effects of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision and its democratic implications are also analyzed to see if money in politics weakens America’s democratic process. There are few studies in the field that are …

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
In this paper, different variables will be tested to figure out whether or not different levels of tax have a determinant on the consumption or demand for alcohol. The study will examine several variables including the sales taxes in each state, the different taxes on beer, wine and spirits, along with GDP per capita, death rates and whether or not there is an advertising ban in a particular state. The results from the research and tests performed focus on the factors that are closely correlated to the consumption of alcohol, with GDP per capita proving to be the most influential …
The Impact Of Defense Spending On Economic Growth In The United States, Nathaniel Harty
The Impact Of Defense Spending On Economic Growth In The United States, Nathaniel Harty
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This paper addresses whether or not the United States’ government’s choice to cut defense spending is going to have a negative impact on economic growth, and therefore slow down the US recovery. This paper analyzes the findings during the last 70 years regarding defense spending and its effect on economic growth, through comparing that relationship between studies under various circumstances. It then goes into detail of the most recent data from the United States to see if there is a casual relationship between defense spending and economic growth. This paper will use the Granger Causality Method to test the significance …
