The achievements and shortcomings in the field of agriculture and rural development in the post-Independence India have been analysed from the policy perspective. A General Survey Of The Experiences Of Some Less-Developed Countries (Ldcs) Under The Structural Adjustment Programme (Sap), O. J. Nnanna

This paper is a review of the impact of Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) on the economies of ten less developed countries (LDCs). It analysed the performance of some selected macroeconomic variables both before and after SAP was adopted in the selected countries. Based on available data, the several and collective lesson of experience confirmed that the impact of SAP varied not only amongst countries, but also within the various sectors in the same economic entity. Overall, it may be concluded that the broad theoretical objective of SAP was achieved mainly on the external sectors of the countries surveyed, while it …

An important element of the economic integration process in West Africa is the achievement of monetary co-operation which can take various forms such as the clearing house mechanism, European Monetary System Model, Parallel Union Currency Model and Common Currency Area. The paper traced the efforts by ECOW AS at evolving monetary co-operation and also analysed the prospects for Nigeria of a common currency in the West African sub-region. This project is concerned with the importance of parental involvement in children learning to read. Research shows children who view reading as an important and valuable process develop a more positive attitude toward learning to read. Children involved in reading activities at home learn to read earlier and have improved comprehension over children who have no experiences reading in the home. Parent involvement can take place in the home or at school as classroom volunteers. This project contains a volunteer handbook for parents and teachers. The paper discusses, largely using Nigeria as a case study, three sets of issues relating to public sector role in agricultural financing. First, it takes an overview of the agricultural situation in African countries in general and in Nigeria in particular in the last twenty years and suggests the critical factors that should guide government activities for agricultural financing in the light of the general structure of agricultural production. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of rapid economic development and democratization in the Third World. Studying societal development of the Third World, developrnentalists have explained how those countries have been democratized through economic development, while dependency theorists have showed the opposite trend. After we review the theoretical background in this area, we hypothesize that there is an inverse relationship between rate of economic development and democratization. Time periods studies are limited to 1970- 1982 for economic development, and to 1974-1985 for democratization. Thirty-six Third World countries are used for this study. The statistical technique is …

A Methodology For The Study Of Children's Environmental Knowledge In Other Cultures, Cindi Katz

This paper presents a methodology which I used to study the content and acquisition of children's environmental knowledge as central to the social reproduction of a rural agricultural economy in the Sudan. My approach was forged drawing on methods of geography, linguistics and anthropology to provide information on (1) how children learn to interact productively with their environment, (2) the nature of their interactions and (3) their knowledge of environmental processes and resources. In this paper I will describe first the methodology adopted including participant observation, ethnosemantic interviews, child-led walks, environmental modeling and "geo-dramas". The aim of the study is to see how the poor have fared over the 1970's: to evaluate whether their welfare improved or worsened. The cost of the private consumption goods will be estimated over the period of 1970-1982 using detailed information on the cost of food, clothing, and shelter for both urban and rural areas.
