We investigated whether and how a juvenile’s history of experiencing sexual abuse affects public perceptions of juvenile sex offenders in a series of 5 studies. When asked about juvenile sex offenders in an abstract manner (Studies 1 and 2), the more participants (community members and undergraduates) believed that a history of being sexually abused as a child causes later sexually abusive behavior, the less likely they were to support sex offender registration for juveniles. Yet when participants considered specific sexual offenses, a juvenile’s history of sexual abuse was not considered to be a mitigating factor. This was true when participants …

The unique character of the United Nations (UN) imposes strategic challenges on the organization’s leadership and management structures at the national and the international level. In response to these challenges, the UN reform efforts, introduced in 1997, paved the way for the UN system effectiveness, efficiency and coherence. Emerging from the reform, the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) engages various development stakeholders in identifying and achieving national development priorities. This review found that the UNDAF is an effective strategic instrument that well-positions the UN at the national level and it enhances national capacities and supports national governments in identifying …

As a process of military withdrawal from politics, the internal reform of The Indonesian National Defense Forces (Tentara Nasional Indonesia/TNI) has specific characters in its pattern as well as in its professionality. In this paper, Talukder Maniruzzaman’s concept of military withdrawal from politics and Robert K. Merton’s and Talcott Parsons’ functional analysis were laboured to inquire that process experienced by TNI. That inquiry used the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. The result shows that TNI reform is a gradual, hierarchical and sustainable process. TNI reform can also categorized as professional military withdrawal from politics—a process which is not going …

This article discusses the entering process of retired military (TNI) officers into politics and their performances in that arena. This article argues that the retired military officer’s roles in politics provided new characteristics to the pattern of civil-military relations in Indonesia. It related to their capability to bridge the communication and to act as muting agent in political conflict between civil and military politicians. This article also asserts that the involvement of retired military officers in politics is strongly based on their commitment to the constitution in building democratic consolidation, which is not representing military interests. Indonesia’s military reform resulted cultural, structural, doctrinal and organizational changes. But those changes are not fundamental enough to build democratic civil–military relation that relies on civilian supremacy. The process of military reform in Indonesia showed us that the success of democratization of civil–military relation depends on institutional setup of the military related to civilian institutions’ persistency, guidance, and initiative. This study used Peter D. Feaver’s theory of “principal-agent” to show that the lack of civilian institutions’ coherence and resoluteness caused persisting problems to the Indonesia’s military reform under democratic system. This research attempts to show that active role of agencies allows an adequate civil–military relation to be established despite of some constrains to the relationship between the two. Employing qualitative approach to assess civil–military cooperation in empowering Papuan society, the case study shows how the military and civilian collaborated to subdue the social tension in a territory prone to conflict. The result suggests that military component took pivotal role in maintaining peace and national security in Papua. The need to protect children from dangerous sex offenders has led to policies that require juvenile sex offenders to register on public online registries. It is important to determine the implications of these laws for the wellbeing of child victims and also for juvenile offenders on these registries. Is the application of these laws—designed for adult offenders—to juveniles appropriate, necessary, and supported by public sentiment? The focus of this paper is the dynamic relationship in automobile industry between entrepreneur and the power in 1969-1998. The length of this study can be divided in three periods: seeking the industrial form, going to maturity, and realizing the industrial autonomous. Looking back to the Old Order and analyzing along three periods, this research has found that the structure transformed the interactions between actors—“the shifting patronage”. This article argue that “Chinese-ness” is an achievable entity to a social group with indigenous cultural identity. Previous studies tend to define ethnic identity as a single and objective entity. This study offers a new understanding on ethnic identity. Identity is defined as a process to identify a certain collectivity in which an individual feels he/she belonged to, while ethnicity is one of the manifestations of collectivities. Recent changes to the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders highlight the importance of identity dysfunction within several psychiatric diagnoses. Despite a long-standing tradition of identity research and theory in the developmental literature, there is limited work establishing intersections between clinical and developmental conceptualizations of identity problems. The relative lack of integration between decades of clinical and developmental work is unfortunate, and likely limits progress in both areas. In this commentary, the authors argue for greater interdisciplinary collaboration and highlight contributions from developmental and clinical theories, which, if integrated, could enhance identity scholarship. The first section offers a brief historical overview of the concept of secularization and how it has become a master narrative in thinking about religion and modernization. The master narrative, however, can be problematic and has been contested in terms of what secularization really means and whether it is indeed a linear process. To address these problems, I then present the different nuances by which the concept of secularization has been clarified and explained. But again, because of its status as a master narrative, its relevance to the vibrant state of religion in other societies has been called into question. …
