Fearless: Cassi Franz, Cassi L. Franz

SURGE

Cassi Franz ’13 has been fearlessly leading this year’s Day of Service. The Day of Service occurs annually and honors Emily Silverstein, a student who passed away in 2009. Emily contributed to Gettysburg’s campus community and beyond through her compassion as well as her passion for social justice. Noor Oweis ’11 started the day of service in 2010 to honor her friend, and now Cassi carries on that tradition. [excerpt]

Good, Bad, Or Biased? Using Best Practices To Improve The Quality Of Your Survey Questions, Eleta Exline

University Library Scholarship

Surveys can be an effective tool for gathering information from library users and assessing library services, yet the quality of the survey questions can make all the difference between a survey that is completed and one that is abandoned in indifference or frustration. The increased emphasis on user informed library assessment and the availability of free online survey tools combine to make the use of surveys very popular in libraries, but inexperienced survey writers are not typically aware of best practices in the social sciences for the format and syntax of survey question and response options. These widely used best …

This technique evolved into a more formal assessment with pre- and post-testing for both one-shot instruction sessions and semester-long research classes. After transcribing the concepts to spreadsheets, librarians standardize the terms and map them to ACRL Information Literacy Standards for more rigorous analysis and assessment. Discover how concept maps can be easily utilized for assessment.

The objective of this study was to identify physical, social, and intrapersonal cues that were associated with the consumption of sweetened beverages and sweet and salty snacks among adolescents from lower SES neighborhoods. Using ecological momentary assessment, participants (N=158) were trained to answer brief questionnaires on handheld PDA devices: (a) each time they ate or drank, (b) when prompted randomly, and (c) once each evening. Data were collected over 7days for each participant. Participants reported their location (e.g., school grounds, home), mood, social …

The Value Of Library Publishing & Undergraduate Education, Stephanie Davis-Kahl

Scholarly Publications

Please join us for a special session at ACRL 2013 in Indianapolis to learn about three different library-led publishing programs – digital monographs at Utah State University, undergraduate journals and conferences at Illinois Wesleyan University, and technical reports at Purdue University – and the impact they have had on each university’s broader mission. By lowering barriers and creating opportunities to publish across the entire continuum of scholarly content, these libraries have found new ways to support faculty research, the student experience, and the public university’s role in the state.

At Utah State, the library has enhanced its University Press by …

The Forgotten Population: Using Assessment To Uncover The Library Needs Of Graduate Students, Melissa Vetter, Tara Baillargeon, Regina Beard, Pat Berge

WashU Libraries Presentations

Graduate student library needs often differ from those of undergraduates and faculty. Focus groups at three separate institutions seek to better understand the needs of a user population whose demands are often great, but whose voices are not always heard. Presenters will highlight commonalities and differences in the findings, identify opportunities for libraries to better serve this population and suggest methods for taking what is learned about graduate student needs and translating them into action.

The Cognitive Neuroscience Of Long-Term Memory, Dr. Brock Kirwan Apr 2013

The Cognitive Neuroscience Of Long-Term Memory, Dr. Brock Kirwan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Memory is an essential cognitive ability. It allows us to use past events to guide future actions. Research in my laboratory focuses on determining the mechanics of how the brain remembers what it does. We are interested in determining what will be remembered and what will be forgotten. Specifically, my research focuses on one aspect of memory encoding that allows us to form distinct memory representations for stimuli and events that are very similar. For example, the location where you parked your car this morning is probably very similar to the location where you parked your car many times before. …

Library-based publishing services are increasingly common as libraries seek to provide alternatives for the dissemination of scholarly and creative work. Connecting these services to the educational mission of libraries' institutions is vital for publishing programs' success and sustainability. This panel of librarians and faculty from liberal arts colleges will discuss the educative and advocacy roles that their library publishing programs have developed, and suggest best practices for librarians wishing to implement their own publishing programs.

Isaac Gilman's slides are available via CommonKnowledge.
