Essays On Nonlinearities And Structural Breaks In The Relationships Between Macroeconomic Variables, Irina B. Panovska
Essays On Nonlinearities And Structural Breaks In The Relationships Between Macroeconomic Variables, Irina B. Panovska
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The dissertation is set out in three chapters, focusing on the structural changes that led to jobless recoveries in following the past three recessions, the asymmetric effects of fiscal stimulus over the business cycle, and the asymmetric effects of fiscal cuts and stimulus respectively. In the first chapter, I examine the three leading theoretical explanations for the recent jobless recoveries using a correlated unobserved components model of aggregate data for output, sales, employment, and hours. The main finding is that employment now respond to demand shocks in a way that is consistent with just-in-time utilization of labor resources. The second …

Halfway Open Or Halfway Shut?: Oa Hybrid Journals In Academia, Robin Champieux, Jill Emery, Kasia Stasik
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
This panel session asks why is hybrid open access important? Scholarly publishers have responded to the OA movement by offering authors the choice of publishing their articles as Open Access (using an author pays funding mechanism) in subscription journals. The study surveys eight publishers to explore a number of questions about the mechanics, implementation, price impacts, and author tracking of this model; and investigates the uptake at two research institutions, with one operating in a NIH Public Access Policy environment.

Hearing The Media: An Investigation Of Mainstream Media And Deaf/Deaf Women's Body Image Development, Aileen Aldalur
Hearing The Media: An Investigation Of Mainstream Media And Deaf/Deaf Women's Body Image Development, Aileen Aldalur
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
The positive relationship between exposure to mass media and body image disturbances has been well documented. However, for the most part, these studies have focused on the contributions of media exposure on the body image of White women. Recent research suggests that for ethnic minority women, membership of a cultural minority may be a protective factor against internalization of mainstream standards of beauty and the development of body image disturbance; although this protective buffer depends on women's levels of acculturation within their ethnic cultures and their respective levels of acculturative stress. The current paper presents survey data investigating whether these …

The Effects Of Preprinted Versus Handwritten Safmeds On Fluency, Samantha Fodrocy
The Effects Of Preprinted Versus Handwritten Safmeds On Fluency, Samantha Fodrocy
Honors Theses
Precision Teaching is an instructional evaluation technique used by educators to ensure that targeted skills are being achieved by learners (Moran & Malott, 2004). Say all fast a minute each day shuffled (SAFMEDS) is a specific PT influenced instructional strategy intended to develop fluency within timed trials (Eshleman, 2000). However, there is little empirical research related to the proposed effects of SAFMEDS. A recent study by Meindl and colleagues (in press) demonstrated the position of the text on SAFMEDS affected fluency. Results of this study suggest extraneous variables affect responding indicating a possible stimulus control issue. However, there were methodological …

Age And Lifecycle Patterns Driving U.S. Migration Shifts, Kenneth M. Johnson, Richelle Winkler, Luke T. Rogers
Age And Lifecycle Patterns Driving U.S. Migration Shifts, Kenneth M. Johnson, Richelle Winkler, Luke T. Rogers
Carsey Publications
Migration—people moving between locations—is now driving much of the demographic change occurring in the United States. In this brief, authors Kenneth Johnson, Richelle Winkler, and Luke Rogers share new research on age-related migration patterns to provide a fuller understanding of the complex patterns of demographic change in the United States. Examining four migration age groups, including emerging adults, young adults, family age, and older adults, their analysis of trends over time shows evidence that certain age groups migrate in similar ways. For example, young adult migrants are flowing to large metropolitan areas, while family age migrants are leaving large urban …

Youth In Mixed-Income Communities Replacing Public Housing Complexes: Context, Dynamics And Response, Mark L. Joseph
Youth In Mixed-Income Communities Replacing Public Housing Complexes: Context, Dynamics And Response, Mark L. Joseph
Faculty Scholarship
Several of the theories that drive the rationale for mixed-income development as a response to urban poverty and the problems of traditional public housing are directly concerned with children and youth. These include assumptions about the possible "role modeling" effects of living among working and middle class people as well as social capital arguments, in which children may act as a kind of "bridge" to foster relationships among adults with children. In spite of these assumptions, young people - particularly older adolescents and young adults - are often at the contentious core of how problems of social control and organization …
Social Facilitation Of Polydipsia As An Animal Model Of Compulsive Behavior, Zina Ameed Eluri
Social Facilitation Of Polydipsia As An Animal Model Of Compulsive Behavior, Zina Ameed Eluri
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Behavior excesses are a key feature in many psychiatric diagnoses. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), in particular, is almost entirely defined in terms of behavior excesses. Although much research has been conducted on OCD treatment, very little research has focused on understanding how these compulsive behaviors are acquired. The few theories advanced to explain the etiology of OCD compulsions have significant limitations. The purpose of this study is to test social facilitation as a potential mechanism through which compulsive behaviors are acquired, via an animal model. Schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP) was employed as the behavior of interest because there is empirical support indicating …

Do Minimum Wage Laws Affect People Who Are Not Covered? Evidence From Documented And Undocumented, Hourly And Piece Rate Workers In U.S. Agriculture, Anita Alves Pena
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
While a stated goal of minimum wage increases is to benefit low-income workers, some employers are not obligated to provide at least minimum wages to all employees. U.S. farm employers comprise one of these groups. Employees of large farms and H2-A workers (temporary nonimmigrant workers lawfully admitted to perform temporary or seasonal agricultural services) are protected by minimum wage legislation, while other migrant workers (especially those who are paid piece rate) are exempt. Furthermore, U.S. agriculture is characterized by a large percentage of illegal migrants, and workers who are illegal may or may not receive wages above minimum levels. This …

WashU Libraries Presentations
One of the most exciting and important conversations within the academic library community is the evolving role of the library in colleges and universities. Among the many scenarios that have been discussed in recent years, one constant is the continuing need for library personnel who can successfully provide information resources to members of the learning and research communities. What are the skills that current and future library professionals will need to be successful in the 21st century academic library? How will organizations recruit, retain and develop the people they need to remain vital? - Emily Stenberg, Digital Publishing & Preservation …

Retention and productivity levels of the existing
Retention and productivity levels of the existing workforce are an essential concern in human resource management. Employee turnover is one of the most studied topics in organisational psychology and is of interest to other professionals, including personnel researchers and managers of organisations. Employees became dissatisfied with their job because of poor condition of service and lack of motivational strategies on the part of the employer. It is against this background that this research examines the influence of job satisfaction on turnover intentions of library personnel in some public Universities in South West Nigeria. …

Native Americans: A Study Of Their Civil War Experience, Ashley Dunbar
Native Americans: A Study Of Their Civil War Experience, Ashley Dunbar
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
Native Americans played a vital role in the history of the United States of America. During the unrest and upheaval of the Civil War, many Native Americans pledged their allegiance to the Union or Confederacy. The Native Americans assembled armies and participated in the battles. Their loyalty was important, as the Union and Confederacy recognized that Native American involvement could influence the war’s outcome. The war also affected the Native Americans—during the war they faced division among their tribes while endeavoring to make ends meet; after the war, they struggled to exist without slavery while coping with broken promises and …
Civil War Attitudes As Seen In Children’S Media And Toys, Andrea De Melo
Civil War Attitudes As Seen In Children’S Media And Toys, Andrea De Melo
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
In an age when children were urged to be “seen and not heard,” some of the faint voices of children during the Civil War survived to give a picture of their lives. Children played many roles in the Civil War; some children became Civil War soldiers, while other children stayed home but never escaped the image of the brave examples of drummer boys embodied in countless poems, literature, and pictures. The children were part of a culture that devoured even the youngest citizens of the war-torn nation during the Civil War. Today through their writings and other primary documents, we …
Get Back! The Use Of Personal Space Among College Students, Sarah Crowe
Get Back! The Use Of Personal Space Among College Students, Sarah Crowe
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
Research on personal space has found that individual cultures and ethnic groups have a similar preference for the use of personal space within each respective group. Differences in the use of personal space exist across gender, as women tend to share a closer proximity than men. The purpose of this study was to measure the use of personal space among college students. Use of personal space was defined in this study as the preference or need for a specific amount of personal space. Specifically, the researcher hypothesized differences across gender and ethnicity would be found. Survey methodology was used to …
Exposing The Real Enemy: The German People’S Fear Of Exploration In The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, John Shoemaker
Exposing The Real Enemy: The German People’S Fear Of Exploration In The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, John Shoemaker
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
This essay critically and rhetorically analyzes the persuasive use of words in Mark Herman’s film, “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas,” which centers on a highly unlikely friendship between a well-to-do German boy and Jewish boy in a concentration camp. The controversy surrounding the film—specifically the rare and unpopular viewpoint of a German family’s experiences during World War II—prompted a further in-depth analysis of the film’s meaning. While Herman takes a unique viewpoint, I suggest that the film moves beyond the portrayal of a family unit and actually gives an explanation and object to blame for …
