What Men?: The Essentialist Error Of The End Of Men, Nancy E. Dowd May 2013

What Men?: The Essentialist Error Of The End Of Men, Nancy E. Dowd

UF Law Faculty Publications

Many aspects of The End of Men are debatable. Among them is the critical issue of essentialism: do Rosin's claims about women withstand scrutiny when we ask, “Is this representative of all women?” While women as a group may have progressed in some domains, they have remained the same or worse in others, and some women have not progressed at all.

An even more significant shortcoming of The End of Men, however, is its essentialism about men. Rosin assumes a beginning, namely, men's prior place of power and privilege in the domains she addresses. To assume that is true of …

These questionnaires were given to subjects at a staged bake sale. The participants filled out the questionnaires and put the completed forms into marked boxes to preserve anonymity.

The data was analyzed by correlating MAST and SWLS scores. It was expected that there …

Talker Identification Learning And New Jersey Dialect Discrimination, Michael Patrick Apfelbaum May 2013

Talker Identification Learning And New Jersey Dialect Discrimination, Michael Patrick Apfelbaum

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Previous studies have demonstrated that individuals can be trained to identify a speaker by voice. Other research has found profound regional differences in dialect across the US, with individuals being able to generally discriminate between them at above chance levels. However, little research has investigated the ability to discriminate between two similar dialects or the effect of using bisyllabic words in talker training. The present study aims to explore the patterns of talker learning and dialect discrimination which arise from training talkers on the two predominate dialects spoken in New Jersey. To investigate such factors, the current research trained 24 …

Risk Factors And Impacts Of Female Genital Mutilation Practice In Senegal, Mame Kani Diop May 2013

Risk Factors And Impacts Of Female Genital Mutilation Practice In Senegal, Mame Kani Diop

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

INTRODUCTION: Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has significant negative physical complications on girls and women and its persistence is linked to lack of education, poverty and other socio-demographic characteristics such as region, type of place of residence, religion, and ethnicity. FGM is extremely dangerous. Even though FGM carries cultural marks, its primary objectives are social, sexual, and economic control of female sexuality. Despite the global effort to eradicate the practice and the evidence of its detrimental health consequences, FGM is still prevalent in Senegalese practicing communities.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the risk factors associated with the …

However, to date only few scientific investigations have explored the role of personal traits in leadership development. The purpose of this mixed method study was to explore the relationship between personality and leadership development. Fifty college students were interviewed to investigate significant developmental events they experienced and leadership lessons learned from these …

Siblings And Discrimination : A Qualitative Exploration, Jessica L. Szweada May 2013

Siblings And Discrimination : A Qualitative Exploration, Jessica L. Szweada

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Research has found that experiencing discrimination is linked to a plethora of mostly negative individual and relational consequences. While a few studies have focused on its impact on interpersonal relationships including marital and parent-child relationships, none have explored its impact on sibling relationships. Siblings play a major role in individual development (Dunn & Plomin, 1991; Sulloway, 1996; Whiteman, Bernard & Jensen, 2011) and positive sibling relationships have been found to act as a buffer to environmental stressors (Gass, Jenkins & Dunn, 2007; Jacobs & Sillars, 2012). The aim of this study was to examine how siblings manage, utilize and are …

Online Mental Health Information Seeking In Young Adults With Mental Health Challenges, L. Kris Gowen May 2013

Online Mental Health Information Seeking In Young Adults With Mental Health Challenges, L. Kris Gowen

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

Barriers such as stigmatization and access to health care may lead young adults with mental health conditions (YAMHC) to try to find alternatives to more traditional means of obtaining care. One possible alternative is to seek information online. The purpose of this article is to better understand how YAMHC use the Internet to access information about mental health, and the challenges they face when trying to access that information. Semistructured focus groups were conducted to investigate how YAMHC use the Internet for information and support regarding their mental health. Three major themes about mental health information seeking emerged from the …

Factors Affecting The Detection Of Relationship Status Deception, Fatima Aboul-Seoud May 2013

Factors Affecting The Detection Of Relationship Status Deception, Fatima Aboul-Seoud

Psychology

Evolutionary theory predicts that people should have sex-specific adaptations based on differential reproductive costs and benefits. Males have to contend with the costs of being cuckolded, while females have to contend with the costs of being abandoned. Previous research on reproductive deception has shown that males and females engage in sex-specific deception in ways that maximize fitness. This project examined the ability to discern ingenuous and disingenuous claims about romantic and sexual relationship status. Participants viewed and rated the veracity of pre-recorded claims about targets’ relationship status. Results showed that the ability to discern claim veracity was dependent upon the …

The Relationships Among Sharing Behaviors, Social Skills, And Problem Behaviors In Preschool Children, Taylor P. Bulman May 2013

The Relationships Among Sharing Behaviors, Social Skills, And Problem Behaviors In Preschool Children, Taylor P. Bulman

Psychology

Over the past few decades, the field of developmental psychopathology has become increasingly interested in children’s development during preschool, a time of immense cognitive and social growth (Parker et al., 2006). Past research indicates that prosocial behaviors exhibited during childhood can predict later adaptive functioning (Gresham et al., 2010). The goal of the present study was to explore the relationships among sharing behaviors, social skills, and problem behaviors in preschool children. Predominantly lower-income preschool children (N = 57, Male = 28) were recruited for participation. Teachers of the participants completed the Social Skills Improvement System (SSIS). A modified version of …

Comparing Grief As A Negative Emotion To Survival For Memory Enhancement, Sarah Pate May 2013

Comparing Grief As A Negative Emotion To Survival For Memory Enhancement, Sarah Pate

Psychology

The survival memory effect tested using a comparison of a survival scenario to the strong negative emotion of a grief scenario. The main hypothesis was that strong, negative emotions allow one’s self to relate to the scenario as it seems to do in the survival scenario. Strong negative emotions may outperform survival in a free recall memory task due to deeper levels of processing. Grief and survival scenarios were compared to a moving scenario that was used as a control condition. The three scenarios were each followed by a list of separate words to be rated on their relevancy to …

Witnessing The Holocaust: More Than Just A Story, Ashley Steinberg May 2013

Witnessing The Holocaust: More Than Just A Story, Ashley Steinberg

Communication

In this paper, I use discourse analytic procedures informed by conversation analysis to understand the testimony of Holocaust witnessing. This is important because, in looking at Holocaust witness testimony, we can understand how witnesses use specific tactics to prove their ownership of a certain experience and event that has occurred, and make that experience available for his or her audience. I use video testimony, produced transcripts of that testimony, and analyzed the two. My conclusions are drawn from this evidence to explain how Edith sequentially builds her narrative. In doing so, we can see her stories as specific and different …

A Senior’S Anthology, Jason Robert Seligson May 2013

A Senior’S Anthology, Jason Robert Seligson

Communication

The first piece in my portfolio is a narrative article about the growing phenomenon of Quidditch. I did a lot of preliminary research about the evolution of the game—including how it was adapted from the pages of Harry Potter to an actual college sport. The Quidditch World Cup is an annual event in New York City and has received coverage from mainstream media outlets over the past few years. I have a close friend who plays the sport at Tufts University, which was what first drew me to the topic. I attended a tournament at Hofstra University and interviewed a …

Perceptions Of The “World”, Marybeth Frances Staebell May 2013

Perceptions Of The “World”, Marybeth Frances Staebell

Communication

The overarching question of my research was to discover in which ways adults perceive Walt Disney World, not the Disney brand or Disney movies, but the theme park itself. Much research has been put into discovering what types of “fantasies” or “dreams” the Walt Disney Company has manufactured and subsequently Walt Disney World has stepped in to bring to fruition. However, we have not discovered what it is that others “dream” about who do not buy into the typical Disney fantasies we must look as how it is that adults perceive the park, not just at how children experience it. …

The Media's Impact On College Students' Career Aspirations With A Focus On Minority Students, Natasha Cooper

Communication

Empirical studies pertaining to media effects on career aspirations have focused particularly on children and junior high school students. However, there is a lack of research focusing on college students and the impacts the media have on their career choices. This study investigates if the media plays a significant role in college students’ career choices, particularly students of ethnic and racial minority backgrounds. Students were selected from two organizations on campus with a media related mission, (N=21). Students ranged from ages 18 to 24 and were asked a series of closed and open-ended questions about their media consumption …

Social Story Intervention For Children With Autism To Decrease Challenging Behaviors During Homework, Arianna Doss May 2013

Social Story Intervention For Children With Autism To Decrease Challenging Behaviors During Homework, Arianna Doss

Psychology

Researchers have created interventions to improve the social behavior and communication of children with autism spectrum disorder. One such intervention is called Social Stories, which describes social situations and their corresponding appropriate behaviors in order to help children with autism better understand social cues. Although several studies indicate the usefulness of this intervention, more evidence is needed. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of social stories in decreasing challenging behaviors of first-graders with autism during homework time and to measure changes in parental stress and family quality of life. Homework time was chosen because children with autism experience homework …

Selected Writings, Ian Goldstein May 2013

Selected Writings, Ian Goldstein

Journalism Program

These writings make up the different forms of journalism that put together my thesis/portfolio. These selections illustrate the expansive reach of the journalism major. My thesis includes articles covering various issues. The research and writing that went into each piece was an important step in my journalism career. Inside are two narrative pieces, the first one short and simple and the second a lengthier, more extensive piece on religion on college campuses. The piece after that is one called Senseless, a story on a product that seems be marketing false claims to users. My most personal essay succeeds those—it is …

Institutional Distance And Entry Mode: How Do Emerging-Market Multinational Companies Overcome Competitive Disadvantages In A Developed Market?, Ru-Shiun Liou May 2013

Institutional Distance And Entry Mode: How Do Emerging-Market Multinational Companies Overcome Competitive Disadvantages In A Developed Market?, Ru-Shiun Liou

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As latecomers to global business competition, emerging-market multinational companies (EMNCs) utilize cross-border merger and acquisitions to swiftly acquire strategic assets, such as brands and distribution channels, compensating for their competency deficiency. Developed markets with well-established firms and well-developed market-supporting institutions become important destinations for EMNCs' strategic asset-seeking investments. Institutional distance, national differences in the institutional environment, constitutes a major source of competitive disadvantage for foreign firms competing with indigenous firms. Foreign firms need to overcome the challenges of unfamiliarity, relational, and discriminatory hazards to establish legitimacy in the host market. Compared to established multinationals that originate from other advanced markets …
