Does Mission Matter? Examining The Role Of Organizational Mission And Religious Identity In Schools Participating In The Milwaukee Parental Choice Program, Michael Mcshane

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For decades, theories of bureaucracy have emphasized the importance of organizational mission in thriving organizations. This dissertation will examine the role of organizational mission in schools, particularly, a sample of schools that participate in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program, the nation's oldest and largest school voucher program. Using teacher and school leader survey data, coupled with measures of student achievement, it will measure mission coherence and correlate it with a variety of outcome variables of interest. It will also take a particularly close look at the role of mission in religious schools.

The research is formulated around three research questions related to spatial organization and settlement patterning, intrasite behavioral practices, and Caddo culture history. Results show that an examination at multiple scales of resolution can inform about the spatial organization and …

Foodways, Families, And Festivities: Ethnobiology And Cultural Conservation In A Rural Missouri Community, Ian Carter Smith May 2013

Foodways, Families, And Festivities: Ethnobiology And Cultural Conservation In A Rural Missouri Community, Ian Carter Smith

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Food customs and traditions bind human groups together in many ways--Socially, geographically, temporally, and emotionally. This thesis describes the intricate relationships between food, ritual, and cultural identity in a rural German-Catholic community in Missouri. By drawing on the anthropological, cultural geographical and folkloric literature surrounding rural Missouri, a portrait of foodways emerges, which in turn illuminates valuable, often understated regional cultural traditions. Religion and ritual are understood as crucial to the continuity of regional identity--it is reinforced and made resilient through shared Social action. The dispersal of ritual feasts and fasts throughout the calendar year regulates collective behavior, interactions, conversations, …

Missionaries In Latin America: A Study On Short-Term Missionaries And The People They Help, Katharine Serio

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The last few years have seen the emergence of growing anthropological interest in short-term mission work, examining the phenomenon though a variety of denominations and mission locations around the world and analyzing the representations and experiences of both the host communities and mission teams traveling to them. This thesis explores how United Methodist short-term mission participants attempt to embody an ideal "mission self" while doing missionary work and the role that narratives about the experience at home played in this. I examine the ways in which members of a Louisiana based UMC team on a medical mission conceptualized their trip …

Spanish Missionization And Maya Social Structure: Skeletal Evidence For Labor Distribution At Tipu, Belize, Lara Kristen Noldner

Anthropology ETDs

The cultural and human biological outcomes of Spanish colonization of the Americas were diverse. This dissertation examines the effects of Spanish colonization on Maya social structure using skeletal evidence for the distribution of labor at Tipu, a mission site in west central Belize. Skeletal remains of indigenous Maya buried in the context of a church, and in accordance with European Catholic burial customs, were examined for enthesis development and the cross-sectional morphology (CSG) of upper and lower limb long bones. Nothing besides burial placement in relation to the church (inside or outside the walls) denotes social status among individuals. Bone …

Lost Worlds: Locating Submerged Archaeological Sites In Southeast Alaska, Kelly Rose Bale Monteleone

Anthropology ETDs

Synthesis and interpretation of archaeologically documented land-use patterns and ethnographic data are used to identify and model where people chose to live, hunt, and gather prehistorically. This project tests the hypothesis that the archaeological record of SE Alaska extends to areas of the continental shelf that were submerged by post-Pleistocene sea level rise beginning around 10,600 cal years BP (9,400 14C years). Digital elevation models (DEM) and sea-level curve for southeastern Alaska are used to create time slices between 16,000 to 10,500 cal BP. The variables (slope, aspect, distance from paleo-stream, paleo-lakes, paleo-coastlines, and known archaeological sites, and coastal sinuosity) …

Military Marital Relationships On Facebook: Associations Between Relational Maintenance Strategies, Relational Satisfaction, And Well-Being, Colleen Dungey

All Theses

Despite the originality that long-distance relationships hold within the field of communication, military martial relationships (MMRs) are one type of long-distance relationship that remains to be thoroughly studied. The dedication that active duty members contribute to their country is often a hardship for martial relationships when faced with temporary separation. With advances in technology and the rise of social networking sites such as Facebook, individuals have the availability to communicate, regardless of distance. When faced with separation, individuals in MMRs encounter the difficulties of communicating to maintain their relationship. Facebook offers a unique medium to practice relational maintenance through the …

Managing Up: Managing Diversity In Challenging Times, Helen Levine May 2013

Managing Up: Managing Diversity In Challenging Times, Helen Levine

Commonwealth Compact

Commonwealth Compact is an organization formed to help make Massachusetts a location of choice for people of color and women in the belief that their contributions are vital to the region’s social and economic future. The need for an initiative such as Commonwealth Compact stems from a number of factors. As racial and ethnic diversity increases across the nation, business and civic leaders agree that it is critical to reverse the reputation that Massachusetts and Greater Boston, in particular, have not been seen as a welcoming, diverse place to live and work for people of color. Without a better reputation …

Using The Bootstrap For Estimating The Sample Size In Statistical Experiments, Maher Qumsiyeh May 2013

Using The Bootstrap For Estimating The Sample Size In Statistical Experiments, Maher Qumsiyeh

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Efron’s (1979) Bootstrap has been shown to be an effective method for statistical estimation and testing. It provides better estimates than normal approximations for studentized means, least square estimates and many other statistics of interest. It can be used to select the active factors - factors that have an effect on the response - in experimental designs. This article shows that the bootstrap can be used to determine sample size or the number of runs required to achieve a certain confidence level in statistical experiments.

The X-Alter Algorithm: A Parameter-Free Method Of Unsupervised Clustering, Thomas Laloë, Rémi Servien May 2013

The X-Alter Algorithm: A Parameter-Free Method Of Unsupervised Clustering, Thomas Laloë, Rémi Servien

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Using quantization techniques, Laloë (2010) defined a new clustering algorithm called Alter. This L1-based algorithm is shown to be convergent but suffers two major flaws. The number of clusters, K, must be supplied by the user and the computational cost is high. This article adapts the X-means algorithm (Pelleg & Moore, 2000) to solve both problems.

Fitting Proportional Odds Models To Educational Data With Complex Sampling Designs In Ordinal Logistic Regression, Xing Liu, Hari Koirala May 2013

Fitting Proportional Odds Models To Educational Data With Complex Sampling Designs In Ordinal Logistic Regression, Xing Liu, Hari Koirala

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The conventional proportional odds (PO) model assumes that data are collected using simple random sampling by which each sampling unit has the equal probability of being selected from a population. However, when complex survey sampling designs are used, such as stratified sampling, clustered sampling or unequal selection probabilities, it is inappropriate to conduct ordinal logistic regression analyses without taking sampling design into account. Failing to do so may lead to biased estimates of parameters and incorrect corresponding variances. This study illustrates the use of PO models with complex survey data to predict mathematics proficiency levels using Stata and compare the …

Cracking The Tax Codes: How State Tax Laws Influence The Number Of Manufacturing Jobs Within Their Borders, Nick Lorenson May 2013

Cracking The Tax Codes: How State Tax Laws Influence The Number Of Manufacturing Jobs Within Their Borders, Nick Lorenson

Political Science Theses and Capstones

With the recent economic downturn, jobs have been at the forefront of people’s concerns. Policy makers in every state have promised their constituents new jobs. Of particular importance are high paying jobs. Manufacturing jobs tend to be a well-paying and highly sought after form of employment. However, in recent decades, the percentage of manufacturing jobs has been declining in the United States. Also, manufacturing facilities have shown an increased likelihood of relocating to different states. I theorize that manufacturing facilities relocating and expanding in different states is primarily due to state tax policies. This phenomenon has increased within recent years …

Since 2003, nearly 1,000 bills concerning voter ID have been introduced in a total of forty-six states. In 2012 alone, voter ID legislation was pending in thirty-three states. On November 6, 2012, the citizens of the state of Minnesota voted on whether they supported an amendment to the state Constitution that would require all voters to present a valid photo ID in order to vote. Despite poll numbers indicating that a majority of Minnesotans supported the amendment the voter ID …

Marriage Equality: Media Coverage And Public Opinion, Amanda Studley

Senior Honors Projects

The struggle for equality is nothing new in this country. Every minority group has faced it’s own hardships when trying to advocate for the advancement of their people. One of the most recent struggles has involved the LGBT community and their pursuit of equal marriage laws nationally. Currently the campaign for marriage equality has had success in nine states and the District of Columbia, each of which now grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples. However, thirty states have enacted constitutional bans on same-sex marriage (NCLS 2013). Currently 49% of the population endorses full and equal marriage rights for same sex …

The Economic Theory Of Deregulation, Samuel D. Gass May 2013

The Economic Theory Of Deregulation, Samuel D. Gass

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

One of the consequences of the financial crisis of 2008 was a renewed focus on the issue of deregulation. The broadly recognized connection between the greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression and the systematic deregulation of our financial markets dating back over three decades reinvigorated the economic and political debate around the appropriate balance between market freedom and government regulation. This paper explores this theme historically, analyzing several economic markets that were highly regulated prior to the late 20th century. Through this analysis it establishes a foundational framework for the study of the widespread deregulation of the late …

Incorporating Personality Trait Pyschology Into Economic Decision Making Models, Sohaib Hasan May 2013

Incorporating Personality Trait Pyschology Into Economic Decision Making Models, Sohaib Hasan

All Theses

In this thesis, we compare the abilities of Big Five locus of personality traits, religiosity, risk aversion, contextual, and historical variables in explaining behavior in the Trust Game, the Minimum Effort Game, and a Cheap Talk Game. We find that that behavior in the games is largely explained by contextual and historical variables, with some influence from personality traits. This suggests that, while there is a role for personality traits in explaining behavior in economic settings, most variation is explained by the context of economic interactions and the results of previous interactions.

The Effect Of Endorser Physical Attractiveness And Endorser-Product Congruence On The Persuasiveness Of An Advertisement, Heather L. Warner May 2013

The Effect Of Endorser Physical Attractiveness And Endorser-Product Congruence On The Persuasiveness Of An Advertisement, Heather L. Warner

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The present research proposes that the attractiveness of an advertisement endorser can affect the viewer's overall rating of the advertisement as well as his or her ability to be persuaded by it. The present research also suggests that endorser-product congruence can impact persuasiveness ratings as well as overall ad ratings. In the experiment itself, participants were asked to read two types of advertisements and fill out two questionnaires. Consistent with previous research, results showed that the skin care advertisement was rated significantly more persuasive and had a higher overall rating when paired with an attractive endorser than an unattractive one. …

Evolutionary Vs. Sociocultural Perspectives On Human Mate Selection: The Role Of Women's Academic Achievement On Their Need For Financial Stability, Natalie A. Stanish May 2013

Evolutionary Vs. Sociocultural Perspectives On Human Mate Selection: The Role Of Women's Academic Achievement On Their Need For Financial Stability, Natalie A. Stanish

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Recent research suggests that the sociocultural perspective has become more prominent than the previously accepted evolutionary perspective of human mate selection (Wood, 1999; Tooby & Cosmides, 1992). Today's women have higher educational attainment and overall higher achievement levels than in the past (Blank & Bansal, 2011; Osava, 2010). The purpose of the current study is to determine if college women exhibit more of a sociocultural or evolutionary approach to their mate selection preferences. Approximately 109 female undergraduates completed the Relationship Preferences Questionnaire, on which they rated 10 attributes of a potential mate on a 6-point scale. Participants' ACT scores and …

The Influence Of Parental Involvement On Academic Motivation And Achievement In College Students, Margaret M. Buoy May 2013

The Influence Of Parental Involvement On Academic Motivation And Achievement In College Students, Margaret M. Buoy

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Parental involvement is defined as a parent providing resources, being interested in, attentive to, and providing emotional resources for a child (Guay, Larose, Ratelle, & Senecal, 2005). The purpose of the current study is to examine the relationship between parental involvement and academic motivation and achievement in college students. Approximately 115 undergraduate students completed the Perceptions of Parental Autonomy-Support and Control Scale (Robbins, 1994), and the Academic Motivation Scale (Vallerand, 1992). The students' cumulative grade point averages (GPAs) were used as a measure of academic achievement. Results from independent samples t tests indicated that those students with low parental support …
