Political Performance, Leadership, And Regional Integration In Europe: An Examination Of The French And German Roles, Gaspare M. Genna, Birol Yesilada, Peter Andrew Noordijk

Prior research on a regional leader’s role in the deepening of regional integration assumes that economic power translates directly into political capabilities. Relative political capacity among states is central to the creation and deepening of regional integration since it is this capacity that smoothes out the transition from a closed to an open economy. Should a state have low levels of this capacity but desire openness, it will partner with regional leaders given the leaders’ higher relative political capacity. However, the leaders’ subsidy of a partner’s capacity comes at a price. The leaders would trade political capacity for forming a …

Sieve Quasi Likelihood Ratio Inference On Semi/Nonparametric Conditional Moment Models, Xiaohong Chen, Demian Pouzo
Sieve Quasi Likelihood Ratio Inference On Semi/Nonparametric Conditional Moment Models, Xiaohong Chen, Demian Pouzo
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper considers inference on functionals of semi/nonparametric conditional moment restrictions with possibly nonsmooth generalized residuals. These models belong to the difficult (nonlinear) ill-posed inverse problems with unknown operators, and include all of the (nonlinear) nonparametric instrumental variables (IV) as special cases. For these models it is generally difficult to verify whether a functional is regular (i.e., root-n estimable) or irregular (i.e., slower than root-n estimable). In this paper we provide computationally simple, unified inference procedures that are asymptotically valid regardless of whether a functional is regular or irregular. We establish the following new results: (1) the asymptotic normality of …
The Limits Of Price Discrimination, Dirk Bergemann, Benjamin Brooks, Stephen Morris
The Limits Of Price Discrimination, Dirk Bergemann, Benjamin Brooks, Stephen Morris
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We analyze the welfare consequences of a monopolist having additional information about consumers’ tastes, beyond the prior distribution; the additional information can be used to charge different prices to different segments of the market, i.e., carry out “third degree price discrimination.” We show that the segmentation and pricing induced by the additional information can achieve every combination of consumer and producer surplus such that: (i) consumer surplus is non-negative, (ii) producer surplus is at least as high as profits under the uniform monopoly price, and (iii) total surplus does not exceed the surplus generated by efficient trade.

Likelihood Inference In Some Finite Mixture Models, Xiaohong Chen, Maria Ponomareva, Elie Tamer
Likelihood Inference In Some Finite Mixture Models, Xiaohong Chen, Maria Ponomareva, Elie Tamer
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Parametric mixture models are commonly used in applied work, especially empirical economics, where these models are often employed to learn for example about the proportions of various types in a given population. This paper examines the inference question on the proportions (mixing probability) in a simple mixture model in the presence of nuisance parameters when sample size is large. It is well known that likelihood inference in mixture models is complicated due to 1) lack of point identification, and 2) parameters (for example, mixing probabilities) whose true value may lie on the boundary of the parameter space. These issues cause …
Reflections On Finance And The Good Society, Robert J. Shiller
Reflections On Finance And The Good Society, Robert J. Shiller
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
After the financial crisis that began in 2007 many have expressed renewed doubts about the basic goodness of the financial sectors, doubts related to deeply-held moral principles and traditions of larger society. We need to reconcile these doubts with financial practice. We must acknowledge the important principle of reciprocity. We must understand that there are natural human tendencies towards aggression and hoarding, which no financial institutions and codes of ethics can completely eliminate. We must appreciate the important role of professional organizations in moderating these tendencies. When these principles are made part of financial education we can expect better public …
The Dialectics Of Citizenship: Exploring Privilege, Exclusion, And Racialization, Bernd Reiter
The Dialectics Of Citizenship: Exploring Privilege, Exclusion, And Racialization, Bernd Reiter
Government and International Affairs Faculty Publications
What does it mean to be a citizen? What impact does an active democracy have on its citizenry and why does it fail or succeed in fulfilling its promises? Most modern democracies seem unable to deliver the goods that citizens expect; many politicians seem to have given up on representing the wants and needs of those who elected them and are keener on representing themselves and their financial backers. What will it take to bring democracy back to its original promise of rule by the people? Bernd Reiter’s timely analysis reaches back to ancient Greece and the Roman Republic in …

Working With Vendors: The Uconn “Daily Campus” Student Newspaper Digital Reformatting Case Study, Michael J. Bennett
UConn Library Presentations
The presentation covers the University of Connecticut Libraries’ efforts to digitize the school’s campus newspaper, from the time of its inception in 1896 to 1990. Source materials for the project were preservation microfilm reels from the Libraries’ Thomas J. Dodd Research Center’s holdings, which were sent to a vendor for batch reformatting. Issues with regard to clearly articulating client needs and evaluating various vendor deliverable options are discussed.
Personal Factors That Influence Meaning And Prioritizatin In Work-Nonwork Roles, Lindsay Ware Benitez
Personal Factors That Influence Meaning And Prioritizatin In Work-Nonwork Roles, Lindsay Ware Benitez
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The importance an individual places on one role over another is captured by a person’s identity salience, which can affect how work and nonwork roles are viewed and how one allocates time and resources to these roles. Within the literature there is a need to further understand what personal factors may influence the development of a person’s identity salience and ultimately contribute to the choices people make surrounding work and nonwork domains. The present study was designed to assess the impact of four higher order values that contribute to a person’s identity salience. Also examined was the potential impact of …

Competency-Based Versus Task-Based Job Descriptions: Effects On Applicant Attraction, Candace Leann Hawkes
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In order for organizations to attract applicants, they need to ensure they are using attractive recruitment materials. Previous research has failed to examine the effect of varying types of job description formats on applicants’ level of attraction to an organization. This study examined applicants’ attraction to organizations based on competency-based and task-based job descriptions. A total of 258 participants were from a Southeastern university, representing three different majors. The job descriptions were individualized based on academic major. Participants read both competency and task-based job descriptions and rated their attraction to each organization. The Big Five and Love of Learning measures …

A Resource Management Perspective On Work Design, Whitney Lane Huskey
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Chronic, negative, uninterrupted stress, specifically in the workplace, can lead to a variety of health issues as well as decreased job satisfaction and increased intentions to turnover within an organization. An important part of managing this negative stress is identifying the specific factors that contribute to it. The present study focuses on the negative consequences of occupational stress by identifying the work design characteristics that influence an individual’s perception of resource drain or gain and, ultimately, occupational stress. It is hypothesized that positive task characteristics, knowledge characteristics, social characteristics, and work context associated with the work environment will negatively correlate …
Odor Sensitivity And The Presence Of P-Cresol, Jessica Mi Mckinney
Odor Sensitivity And The Presence Of P-Cresol, Jessica Mi Mckinney
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Olfactory function declines throughout the different stages of kidney disease. End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients have experienced improved olfactory function after dialysis, leading some researchers to suspect uremic toxins as the cause of olfactory decline (Raff et al., 2008; Bomback & Raff, 2011). It is thought that p-cresol is the specific uremic toxin to cause a decline in olfactory function because it is not easily filtered out of the blood during dialysis (Meijers et al., 2010). The study sought to set up a control group for future studies by demonstrating p-cresol is not in the blood of healthy participants and …
Examination Of The Role Of Implicit Clinical Judgments During The Mental Health Intake, Ora Nakash, Margarita Alegría
Examination Of The Role Of Implicit Clinical Judgments During The Mental Health Intake, Ora Nakash, Margarita Alegría
School for Social Work: Faculty Publications
We examined the characteristics of therapists' implicit clinical judgments during the mental health intake. Following the intake sessions with new clients, we conducted 129 semistructured interviews with 47 therapists. We found that 82% of therapists and 75% of interviews included reference to implicit clinical judgments. Therapists referred to these judgments as a cognitive process that relied on knowledge acquired through past clinical experiences and was primarily based on nonverbal cues and affective communication. Therapists used implicit processes when evaluating how to facilitate a good working alliance, what diagnostic information to collect, and how to decide on a diagnosis. The majority …
Conceptual Distinction Between The Critical P Value And The Type I Error Rate In Permutation Testing, Richard B. Anderson
Conceptual Distinction Between The Critical P Value And The Type I Error Rate In Permutation Testing, Richard B. Anderson
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
To counter past assertions that permutation testing is not distribution-free, this article clarifies that the critical p value (alpha) in permutation testing is not a Type I error rate and that a test's validity is independent of the concept of Type I error.

A Monte Carlo Simulation Of The Robust Rank-Order Test Under Various Population Symmetry Conditions, William T. Mickelson
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The Type I Error Rate of the Robust Rank Order test under various population symmetry conditions is explored through Monte Carlo simulation. Findings indicate the test has difficulty controlling Type I error under generalized Behrens-Fisher conditions for moderately sized samples.

Constructing A More Powerful Test In Two-Level Block Randomized Designs, Spyros Konstantopoulos
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A more powerful test is proposed for the treatment effect in two-level block randomized designs where random assignment takes place at the first level. When clustering at the second level is assumed to be known, the proposed test produces higher estimates of power than the typical test.
Bayesian Inference Of Pair-Copula Constriction For Multivariate Dependency Modeling Of Iran’S Macroeconomic Variables, M. R. Zadkarami, O. Chatrabgoun
Bayesian Inference Of Pair-Copula Constriction For Multivariate Dependency Modeling Of Iran’S Macroeconomic Variables, M. R. Zadkarami, O. Chatrabgoun
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Bayesian inference of pair-copula constriction (PCC) is used for multivariate dependency modeling of Iran’s macroeconomics variables: oil revenue, economic growth, total consumption and investment. These constructions are based on bivariate t-copulas as building blocks and can model the nature of extreme events in bivariate margins individually. The model parameter was estimated based on Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. A MCMC algorithm reveals unconditional as well as conditional independence in Iran’s macroeconomic variables, which can simplify resulting PCC’s for these data.

The Adair Site: Ouachita River Valley Relations Through Ceramic Analysis, Joanne Demaio
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Adair site (3GA1), located in the Upper Ouachita River Valley in Garland CO, Arkansas is an Upper Ouachita Caddo site. The people at the site are presumed to be at the center of cultural dominance for the area and had interaction with Caddo sites in the region. This thesis explores this by studying the whole vessel collections that were excavated at the Adair site in the 1930s. Comparing the Adair collection to three other Caddo sites provides information about the Social standing of the Adair site, its relations with other sites, and how it fits into the greater fabric …

A Performance Analysis Of Ws-* (Soap) And Restful Web Services For Implementing Service And Resource Orientated Architectures, Philip Markey, Gary Clynch
Conference Papers
The past number of years have seen the emergence of Service-Oriented Architectures as a dominant architecture for implementing enterprise scale distributed systems. Two main styles of SOA exist, namely SOAP based services and RESTful services. There has been much comment and debate on the pros and cons of each approach to implementing a SOA, a lot of which has surrounded the performance characterictcs of both approaches. In this paper, the authors presents the results of a performance analysis that was conducted on a set of test SOA scenarios implemented using both SOAP and RESTful approaches; in particular the caching capabilities …

On Ideals In Romantic Relationships, Paul Hjellming, Lori Bergstrom, Bo Johnson, Eric Osmondson
Colloquy Undergraduate Research Journal
Being in relationships is inseparable from being human. Humans are communicators and naturally form connections with other humans around them. Relationships help individuals assess who they are and who they would like to be. Individuals use relationships to satisfy emotional, physical, and instrumental needs. Some of these needs are best met by romantic relationships between two individuals. Romantic relationships, which many people often expect to partake in throughout their lives, are intimately affected by standards, assumptions, and ideals. Though some deny it, everyone has standards for the person with whom they could potentially be romantically involved. This study will focus …
The Genre Of The Meme, Thomas Monson
The Genre Of The Meme, Thomas Monson
Colloquy Undergraduate Research Journal
The development and proliferation of the Internet has led to numerous discoveries in the study of media and communication. Such a recent development in online communication is the rise of the online meme. The traditional meaning of meme has been transformed and has developed a new meaning within the sphere of online communication. The meme as defined by its new meaning has recurred in myriads, which have provided enough reason and data to develop a rhetorical genre for the subject. The first half of this study—the background—will begin with an orientation to the meme, an explanation of generic criticism, and …

An Analysis of American Masculinity
Edward Pare, History and Mathematics
Faculty Sponsor: Kyle Kusz, Kinesiology
American masculinity, more specifically white masculinity in America, is an ever-evolving subject. In the past two decades, cultural analysts have been writing once again about the idea of the existence of a crisis of white masculinity. This project takes a multi-method approach to analyze the social effects of mass mediated white masculinities on the process of how young white, middle class men construct and perform their white masculinities.
We live in a culture where citizens are inundated with media information and images, some of which …
