Linked Up: Using Free Tools To Maintain Access To E-Resources, Amelia Mowry

Library Scholarly Publications

No one will argue that the internet has a lot to offer our patrons. Library web sites and systems link to a variety of valuable electronic resources such as databases, e-journals, and educational web sites. Unfortunately, the digital world is ever-changing, and maintaining access to these resources is a real challenge for librarians. Link checkers can be a great tool for keeping URLs updated, but they were generally not designed with libraries in mind; they may run into issues with resources that have access limited by IP address, go through ezproxy, or begin sessions.

This poster compares several free and/or …

Essays On Quantitative Methods For Consequences Of Political Institutions, Tsung-Han Tsai May 2013

Essays On Quantitative Methods For Consequences Of Political Institutions, Tsung-Han Tsai

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I develop and apply sophisticated Bayesian models to the analysis of institutional effects on electoral and legislative behavior in the policy making process. Leveraging the flexibility of Bayesian methods for statistical modeling, I deal with several methodological problems encountered by political scientists, and social scientists in general, in some established research agenda. This dissertation shows the improvement of the ability to evaluate the success of conflicting theories when these methodological issues are properly dealt with. The consequences of political institutions are investigated at three different levels in this dissertation: countries, political parties, and individual legislators. First of …

Capital Accumulation With And Without Land Market Liberalization: Beyond The “Win-Win” Situation, George Vachadze May 2013

Capital Accumulation With And Without Land Market Liberalization: Beyond The “Win-Win” Situation, George Vachadze

Publications and Research

This paper examines the effect of land market liberalization on the dynamics of capital accumulation. It is shown that the land market liberalization, which is accompanied with the transfer of agricultural technology, may not always offer a “win‐win” outcome for developed and developing countries. Improved agricultural productivity generates a growth enhancing externality. However, land market liberalization affects the balance between the equalizing force of the diminishing returns technology and the un‐equalizing force of the low income elasticity of the agricultural commodity demand. As a result, land market liberalization accompanied with the transfer of agricultural productivity, may not always guarantee a …

Phonological Parameters Of Indigenous And Asl Country Name-Signs, Carolyn J. Stephens May 2013

Phonological Parameters Of Indigenous And Asl Country Name-Signs, Carolyn J. Stephens

Journal of Interpretation

This investigation was guided by the following research questions: What are the American Sign Language (ASL) and indigenous signs for each country in the world? What phonological features do they exhibit? Are these features consistent with previous research on ASL? The research presented in this article is the result of a project that provides a comprehensive online compilation of country-name signs. A website was created to display both written descriptions and videos of the signs, and 180 countries with 314 total variations were identified, documented, recorded, coded and analyzed. A thorough literature review was conducted and an analysis of phonological …

Participation Framework And Footing Shifts In An Interpreted Academic Meeting, Annie R. Marks May 2013

Participation Framework And Footing Shifts In An Interpreted Academic Meeting, Annie R. Marks

Journal of Interpretation

Students training to become sign language interpreters are often faced with the challenge of negotiating boundaries with the deaf and hearing consumers with whom they interact. Many interpreter-training programs have traditionally taught students that it is most appropriate to maintain “neutrality” in our interactions and in our interpretations. (Metzger, 1999). The objective of this study is to add to limited amount of research that examines footings in interpreted interaction. Metzger (1999) performed one of the only studies of participation framework and footings in American Sign Language-English interpreted encounters. This study is a replication of her initial work and aims to …

Deaf Voice And The Invention Of Community Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent May 2013

Deaf Voice And The Invention Of Community Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent

Journal of Interpretation

This article poses the existence of a relational model of interpreting that is already rooted in culturally Deaf ways of using evolved interpreters for intercultural communication. Deaf criticism of professional interpreters directs attention to the history of simultaneous interpretation and its origins at the Nuremberg trials. The birth of professional spoken language simultaneous interpretation occurred as a result of new technology used in a new situation. In that setting, the role space of the interpreter was created and confined within a language regime based on unquestioned and therefore non-negotiable values.

The Deaf voice has been raised in protest against some …

Deaf-Hearing Interpreter teams: A Teamwork Approach

Abstract

Little research has been done on the perspectives of members of Deaf-hearing interpreter teams. Interviews were conducted by and with Deaf interpreters and hearing interpreters who had experience working in Deaf-hearing interpreter teams. The Demand-Control Schema was part of the framework for the study. Expectations of each other and roles played during preconferencing and postconferencing were important aspects of the study. This article presents perspectives and recommendations of team members, who shared positive and negative experiences that need to be considered when providing training for Deaf-hearing interpreter teams.

Reinventing The Development Wheel Of The World Trading System (Reviewing Sonia E. Rolland, Development At The World Trade Organization (2012)), Sungjoon Cho May 2013

Reinventing The Development Wheel Of The World Trading System (Reviewing Sonia E. Rolland, Development At The World Trade Organization (2012)), Sungjoon Cho

All Faculty Scholarship

In probing how WTO norms may affect developing countries, Sonia Rolland introduces two paradigms in this book: development as an idiosyncrasy and development as a normative co-constituent to trade. The first paradigm concerns development-related exceptions and carve-outs found within WTO rules and agreements that exemplify a contingent provision of special favors to developing countries. Overall, it represents a limited mandate on development in the WTO. In contrast, the second paradigm embodies a normative operationalization of development agenda within the WTO system. It normatively reconstructs WTO rules and institutions in a way where development is a core mandate of the WTO, …

The Object Of Desire: How Being Objectified Creates Sexual Pressure For Women In Heterosexual Relationships, Tiffany Hoyt May 2013

The Object Of Desire: How Being Objectified Creates Sexual Pressure For Women In Heterosexual Relationships, Tiffany Hoyt

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The objectification of women is widespread in the United States (American Psychological Association, 2007), although there is relatively little research on objectification in romantic relationships. The purpose of this research was to explore how partner-objectification might be related to sexual pressure in heterosexual relationships. It was hypothesized that men who objectify their partners would be more likely to sexually pressure and/or coerce their partners. Additionally, a woman who feels objectified by her partner was hypothesized to internalize the objectification, feel like she has less control in the relationship (i.e., less sexual agency), and perceive more sexual pressure and coercion from …

Tax Increment Financing In Missouri: Political Development Of The Statute Contextualized With Use And Patterns Of Adoption, Cassandra Butler May 2013

Tax Increment Financing In Missouri: Political Development Of The Statute Contextualized With Use And Patterns Of Adoption, Cassandra Butler

Dissertations

Economic development is in the interests of all governments as a component of society that impacts its citizenry’s well-being, yet in a democratic, capitalistic society, many aspects of the economy rely on the activities of private enterprise. Governments are often motivated to develop policies that allow them to “partner” with private enterprise in order to persuade their behavior on behalf of its citizenry. Tax Increment Financing (TIF) is one of the tools that states have enacted to assist local governments partner with private investors. The statute that enabled TIF use in the state of Missouri is now 30 years old. …

Behind The Scenes: A Look At Socio-Cultural Messages In Situation Comedies And Their Effects On Gendered Messages, Victoria S. Hogan May 2013

Behind The Scenes: A Look At Socio-Cultural Messages In Situation Comedies And Their Effects On Gendered Messages, Victoria S. Hogan

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Specific values, characteristics and behaviors are expected for men and women in American society. Previous research has shown that gender stereotypes on television programs are believed to influence society's “perception of appropriate sex roles” and reinforce negative notions about the role of women in society (Fullteron et al. 2000). According to Lee & Shaw (2010), matters have not changed much. Television uses speech that creates images of and attitudes towards women that prevent equality. This study undertakes a content analysis of two prime-time television shows, 2 Broke Girls and Happy Endings. The objective of this research is to analyze the …

The People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (Peta): Creating A Collective Identity, Megan Fletcher May 2013

The People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (Peta): Creating A Collective Identity, Megan Fletcher

Honors Program Theses and Projects

How different are humans from animals? The animal rights movement has been tackling this question and more on its quest to establish basic human rights for animals. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is one of the most recognizable organizations within the animal rights movement due to their attention grabbing antics and controversial advertisements. Through visual rhetoric PETA attempts to answer the question of human and animal division. In both PETA’s PSA and print advertisements they attempt to create shared physical and mental substance between humans and animals. In creating a shared identity PETA could establish a …

Abandoning Standard Assumptions In Pareto Optimization Models: Simulating Market Scenarios With Incorrectly Estimated Preference Structures, Joshua Bernard May 2013

Abandoning Standard Assumptions In Pareto Optimization Models: Simulating Market Scenarios With Incorrectly Estimated Preference Structures, Joshua Bernard

Honors Program Theses and Projects

This honors thesis examines the consequences of abandoning specific underlying assumptions of economic models used to describe the distribution of goods among individual agents or parties and the information about each one’s preferences. In microeconomic theory, the Edgeworth Box, Pareto-optimal trade, and convex (especially Cobb-Douglas) preference structures are used to model the process in which consumers and producers make trade-off choices that allocate limited resources among competing agents. This thesis investigates the common underlying assumptions of these economic models by drawing upon mathematical theory to develop both an analytical framework and the tools that help us establish boundaries for these …

Anterior And Posterior Types Of Neuropsychological Deficits In Parkinson’S Disease: A Subgroup Classification Of Cognitive Outcome, Megan M. Risi May 2013

Anterior And Posterior Types Of Neuropsychological Deficits In Parkinson’S Disease: A Subgroup Classification Of Cognitive Outcome, Megan M. Risi

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD) exhibit cognitive deficits. Recent studies suggest there are distinct cognitive profiles of PD characterized by deficits in abilities that are dependent upon anterior versus posterior areas of the brain. While anterior-based deficits are more prevalent, posterior-based deficits are more predictive of the future occurrence of dementia in PD. The purpose of the current project was to examine these cognitive profiles in more detail. Performance on six tests of anterior function and six tests of posterior function was examined in 34 non-demented PD participants and 27 healthy control participants matched for age and education. Results showed …

"Terrorism" In The Age Of Obama: The Rhetorical Evolution Of President Obama’S Discourse On The War On "Terror", Kelly Long

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Since September 11th, 2001, the word “terrorism” has helped to shape and been shaped by the culture of the American people who have come into contact with this concept on a daily basis. The use of “terrorism” and its companion the War on “Terror” carried with it certain ideological baggage that has serve as a prism in which the American people have viewed United States’ foreign affairs over the past decade. The fight against “terrorism” offered a pre-text for the U.S. to engage in two different wars, administrated a policy of hunting and killing “terrorists” across the globe, constructed policies …

Ex-Prisoners' Perceptions Of The Availability And Effects Of Services In Correctional Settings, Jenna Houston May 2013

Ex-Prisoners' Perceptions Of The Availability And Effects Of Services In Correctional Settings, Jenna Houston

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The U.S. system of retributive justice drives punitive measures, rather than interventions that could reduce recidivism. If prisoners’ needs are not met while serving time within the penal system, their chances of re-offending are greater (Baillargeon, 2010). The purpose of this study was to gather information about correctional programming from male ex-prisoners who have been involved in community re-entry services at Span Inc. in Boston, MA. Furthermore, this study also examined whether or not the programming contributed to positive coping skills during their incarceration as well as to their adaptation upon reentering the community. Data was collected by conducting ten …
