The State Of The Research: Meta-Analysis And Conceptual Critique Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Ryan Lance Nelson May 2013

The State Of The Research: Meta-Analysis And Conceptual Critique Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Ryan Lance Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers studying the long-term cognitive sequelae of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) have produced disparate results. Some studies have shown little to no long-term cognitive effects while others have shown that persistent cognitive sequelae continue to affect a subgroup of patients. Meta-analysis has been used to try to integrate these contrasting results to foster a coherent understanding of the cognitive outcomes following mTBI. However, previous meta-analyses of long-term cognitive sequelae have used studies from a period of mTBI research where methodological rigor has been called into question (Carroll, Cassidy, Holm, Kraus, & Coronado, 2004). Using studies from this period, meta-analysts …

Animal Welfare And Food Safety Aspects Of Confining Broiler Chickens To Cages, Sara Shields, Michael Greger May 2013

Animal Welfare And Food Safety Aspects Of Confining Broiler Chickens To Cages, Sara Shields, Michael Greger

Agribusiness Collection

In most areas of the world, broiler chickens are raised in floor systems, but cage confinement is becoming more common. The welfare of broiler chickens in cages is affected by movement restriction, poor bone strength due to lack of exercise, and prevention of key behavioral patterns such as dustbathing and ground scratching. Cages for broiler chickens also have a long history of causing skin and leg conditions that could further compromise welfare, but a lack of controlled studies makes it difficult to draw conclusions about newer cage designs. Cage environments are usually stocked at a higher density than open floor …

An Equal Opportunity Rejection, Katherine M. Patterson May 2013

An Equal Opportunity Rejection, Katherine M. Patterson

SURGE

Let’s talk about applications. We’ve all been there. You write your application, work on draft after draft and then you send it all off to the college or job of your dreams. And you wait…and wait…and wait. You wait for some sort of letter or phone call that says something along the lines of, “We love you! You’re awesome, and smart and special, and we think you’d be a great asset!” And maybe you’re lucky and you do get that letter, but let’s be real - that doesn’t always happen. It can be frustrating to receive a rejection letter (or …

College Students And Binge Drinking: Exploring The Relationship Between Control And Intention On Behavior, Trisha Rhodes, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard May 2013

College Students And Binge Drinking: Exploring The Relationship Between Control And Intention On Behavior, Trisha Rhodes, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The present study draws on Ajzen's (1985, 1991) theory of planned behavior (TPB) to explore the relationships between students' intentions to drink responsibly, students' perceptions of control over their behavior, and their reported levels of drinking. We relied on a randomly selected and surveyed sample of 149 students at a Midwestern university. We hypothesized students who reported stronger intentions and greater perceived control would report reduced levels of drinking. Our findings indicated that respondents who intended to drink responsibly and scored higher on two measures of perceptions of control consumed less alcohol 10 days prior to the survey and binged …

A J-Test For Panel Models With Fixed Effects, Spatial And Time, Harry H. Kelejian, Gianfranco Piras May 2013

A J-Test For Panel Models With Fixed Effects, Spatial And Time, Harry H. Kelejian, Gianfranco Piras

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

In this paper we suggest a J-test in a spatial panel framework of a null model against one or more alternatives. The null model we consider has fixed effects, along with spatial and time dependence. The alternatives can have either fixed or random effects. We implement our procedure to test the specifications of a demand for cigarette model. We find that the most appropriate specification is one that contains the average price of cigarettes in neighboring states, as well as the spatial lag of the dependent variable. Along with formal large sample results, we also give small sample Monte …

Swallowing The Bitter Pill, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The incoming elected government, upon assumption of office, will have a myriad of pressing issues to resolve. One of its immediate tasks will be to formulate and announce the national budget. Along with the budget, the government will be well advised to announce an economic policy direction statement. This should sketch out the broad contours of economic policies and institutional reforms they propose to carry out during their tenure. This statement is critical to inform the domestic and foreign investors, who have been in a ‘wait and see’ mode for quite some time, about the overall policy framework. Uncertainty has …

A Phenomenological Study Of Falling Out Of Romantic Love, Joanni L. Sailor May 2013

A Phenomenological Study Of Falling Out Of Romantic Love, Joanni L. Sailor

The Qualitative Report

Romantic love is considered a necessary ingredient in marriage. In this study, the experience of falling out of romantic love with one’s spouse was examined. Eight individuals who had fallen out of romantic love with their spouse were interviewed. By using Moustakas’ Transcendental Phenomenological method, several themes emerged which provided a description of the experience of the phenomena. These themes included loss of trust, of intimacy, and of feeling loved; emotional pain; and negative sense of self. Gradual decline was identified as a slow, progressive deterioration of the relationship in which over time the romantic love decreased and eventually ended. …

Connecting Scientific Articles With Research Data: New Directions In Online Scholarly Publishing, Ijsbrand Jan Aalbersberg, Judson Dunham, Hylke Koers

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Researchers across disciplines are increasingly utilizing electronic tools to collect, analyze, and organize data. However, when it comes to publishing their work, there are no common, well-established standards on how to make that data available to other researchers. Consequently, data are often not stored in a consistent manner, making it hard or impossible to find data sets associated with an article – even though such data might be essential to reproduce results or to perform further analysis. Data repositories can play an important role in improving this situation, offering increased visibility, domain-specific coordination, and expert knowledge on data management. As …

Marginal Mentoring In The Contact Space: Diversified Mentoring Relationships At A Midsized Midwestern State University (Mmsu), Marcy Meyer, Kiesha Warren-Gordon

The Qualitative Report

This study is a collaborative investigation that melds traditional qualitative social scientific and contemporary autoethnographic methods to examine diversified mentoring relationships at a midsized midwestern state university (MMSU). The first author conducted 21 semi - structured interview s with MMSU faculty members and professional personnel who were members of underrepresented minority (URM) groups. A thematic analysis of the data, informed by the literature on developmental relationships and intergroup communication, reveals a number of problems with MMSU’s formal mentoring program and intergroup communication climate. Moreover, the findings indicate that the quality of mentoring relationships affects protégés’ co - cultural communication practices. …

Collusion In Peer Evaluation, Suo Wang May 2013

Collusion In Peer Evaluation, Suo Wang

Honors Scholar Theses

The exact consensual and impartial division function by DeClippel et al (2008) offers a procedure for dividing a fixed award among partners. The peer evaluation mechanism proposed by DeClippel et al (2008) offers participating partners incentives to tell the truth. This paper examines and demonstrates that, when agents form at most one coalition and report wrong values of the relative shares, they capture the total amount of money being divided and their share improves by exactly the same percentage. When multiple coalitions emerge, the division function fails to assign payoffs to each partner. This paper also includes a discussion of …
