Do More, Say Less: Saying "I Love You" In Chinese And American Cultures, Catherine Caldwell-Harris, Ann Kronrod, Joyce Yang
Do More, Say Less: Saying "I Love You" In Chinese And American Cultures, Catherine Caldwell-Harris, Ann Kronrod, Joyce Yang
Psychology
Reticence to express emotions verbally has long been observed in Chinese culture, but quantitative comparisons with Western cultures are few. Explanations for emotional reticence have typically focused on the need in collectivist culture to promote group harmony, but this explanation is most applicable to negative emotions such as anger, not positive expressions such as Wo ai ni [I love you]. A survey on verbal usage of Wo ai ni was administered to university students in Beijing and Shanghai, and compared to uses of I love you by American students in the United States. Chinese respondents were not only overall more …
Biased Language Usage And Age In Reinforcing Marginalizing Behavior, Rebecca Lynn Tanner
Biased Language Usage And Age In Reinforcing Marginalizing Behavior, Rebecca Lynn Tanner
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Biased language usage is prevalent within every society and within every level of all these societies. While there are many studies that look at the psychological, physical, and symbolic manifestations of biased language, it is unclear as to when this type of behavior is recalled as being derogatory by people. This study conducted in-depth face-to-face interviews of ten individuals in a medium-sized Midwestern city. Questions focused on the age and context in which interviewees recalled twenty-four different situations of exposure to derogatory and marginalizing language usage or behavior. The study suggests that most language is first encountered within the family …

Students on an Immersion Project in New Orleans are definitely doing some great work this week! The students spent part of the week working with Grow Dat Youth Farm in New Orleans City Park, an organization that hires youth from the city to work at the farm. They sell 60% of their organically grown food at whole food markets and restaurants and they donate the rest to their student workers. The organization strives to teach their volunteers responsibility, team work and commitment. [excerpt]
Cost-Effectiveness Of Treating Pervasive Developmental Disorders: A Comparison By Treatment Modality, Jaime Elizabeth Ballard
Cost-Effectiveness Of Treating Pervasive Developmental Disorders: A Comparison By Treatment Modality, Jaime Elizabeth Ballard
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the costs of pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) treatment in a large healthcare organization. When compared to individual therapy and mixed therapy, family therapy had significantly fewer sessions, fewer episodes of care, and better cost-effectiveness. Individual therapy had significantly shorter treatment length than mixed therapy. There were no differences in treatment length or number of episodes by license, but dropout and cost-effectiveness were significantly different. Medical doctors had the highest dropout and best cost-effectiveness, while Marriage and Family Therapists had the lowest dropout and Masters of Social Work had the poorest cost-effectiveness. Children had significantly higher dropout than …
Analysis Of Propaganda Structure: Developing The Interpersonal Paradigm Of War Propaganda, Virginia Camille Zimmerman
Analysis Of Propaganda Structure: Developing The Interpersonal Paradigm Of War Propaganda, Virginia Camille Zimmerman
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This communication research analysis examines the ways in which the interpersonal theory, Uncertainty Reduction Theory (URT), combines with the 19 Principles of Propaganda to lend insights in to current war propaganda and the ways in which we can use URT to make sense of war propaganda messages. Propaganda has evolved due to technological advancements made in media such as television and internet. We may better understand the process and function of propaganda if we examine it from an interpersonal communication standpoint. Here in a textual analysis of past propaganda and propaganda of today illustrates the evolution that has occurred. Through …
Speaking Like A Brahmin: Social Aspects Of A Register Of Spoken Telugu, Bradley B. Miller
Speaking Like A Brahmin: Social Aspects Of A Register Of Spoken Telugu, Bradley B. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
Among sociological studies in South Asia, frequent reference is made to caste as one of the greatest motivating factors in establishing, reinforcing, and creating social structure. This system of social hierarchy has, however, undergone drastic shifts and changes over the past decades (Dirks, 2001: 5) resulting in 'caste' as a term used to systematize concepts of social identity, community, and organization in India. The Brahmin caste, in particular, has undergone drastic changes as a result of social and political influence from without as well as from within, resulting in a conflict of identity (Bairy, 2010: 233).As a direct result of …

War's Visual Discourse: A Content Analysis Of Iraq War Imagery, Mary Elizabeth Major
War's Visual Discourse: A Content Analysis Of Iraq War Imagery, Mary Elizabeth Major
Dissertations and Theses
This study reports the findings of a systematic visual content analysis of 356 randomly sampled images published about the Iraq War in Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News and World Report from 2003-2009. In comparison to a 1995 Gulf War study, published images in all three newsmagazines continued to be U.S.-centric, with the highest content frequencies reflected in the categories U.S. troops on combat patrol, Iraqi civilians, and U.S. political leaders respectively. These content categories do not resemble the results of the Gulf War study in which armaments garnered the largest share of the images with 23%. This study concludes that …

Department Library Dashboards As A Measure Of Library Value, Kelly Gordon Jacobsma
Faculty Presentations
A department dashboard approach to measuring library value was developed after the library was charged with measuring its contributions to the academic program distinctives at a liberal arts college. This presentation will focus on using data that libraries already collect to tell a story about an academic department’s library activity. Working in a dashboard culture, how the dashboards will be used to drive future conversations with departments and effects on library decision-making will be discussed.

Ohio Utica Shale Region Monitor, Kelly Kinahan, Edward W. Hill
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
In 2011, drilling for oil and gas recommenced in the state of Ohio after a century of dormancy, due to recently developed technologies enabling the extraction of hydrocarbons from shale reservoirs that had previously been assumed impermeable and therefore uneconomical. The purpose of this report is to analyze two indicators of economic activity, sales receipts and employment, related to the early stages of Utica and Marcellus shale development in the State of Ohio. Tracking these two measures will assist in the preliminary detection of economic trends that are likely related to the growth of the oil and gas industries in …
Baseline Study Of The Relationship Between Green Space And Age, Chris Schulze
Baseline Study Of The Relationship Between Green Space And Age, Chris Schulze
Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
Current research on green space and human health is spread among many academic disciplines and is growing. To aid researchers and local governments in understanding the relationship between the two, this study presents a baseline analysis of the spatial relationship between green space and age. It considers how a city’s population is distributed around green space and looks at spatial and statistical patterns related to age and location. This study identifies a gap in current research and looks at green space and age in a geographic manner. The findings of this literature review and analysis provide researchers with another way …

Bringing The Tutors To The Students: An Investigative Study Of Wac Tutoring In Second Language Contexts, Kendon C. Kurzer
Theses and Dissertations
The number of English as a second language (ESL) students attending universities in the United States has increased during the 2011-2012 school year (Hagedorn & Lee, 2005), with, for the first time since 2001, more undergraduate international students than graduate students in institutions across the country (Davis, 2012). Given the wide range of backgrounds and English proficiencies represented by this group, their varying needs are frequently not being fully met, particularly in reading and writing, two areas that are often weak in ESL students but linked to academic success (Matsuda, 2004). Regarding writing, much research has shown that ESL students …
The Development Of Two Units For Basic Training And Resources For Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages: "Developing English Language Learners' Listening Skills" And "Developing English Language Learners' Speaking Skills", Ubambor Bumandalai
Theses and Dissertations
Today, a countless number of untrained and volunteer English as a second or foreign language teachers are working throughout the world to help meet the rising need for English teachers. Many of these volunteers have little or no training in teaching English. However, Basic Training and Resources for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (BTRTESOL) is a book and website that can be used as both a teacher-training program and a self-learning resource to help prepare these volunteer teachers. The idea for this program started with Dr. Lynn Henrichsen, who later invited a team of graduate students …

Research Brief: "Cognitive Behavioral Treatment For Post-Traumatic Nightmares: An Investigation Of Predictors Of Dropout And Outcome", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This brief is about the cognitive behavior treatment outcomes and drop outs of Vietnam veterans with PTSD who experience nightmares. In policy and practice, various socialization strategies should be implemented by clinics based on veterans' levels of traumatic history, and veterans' families should work to create a positive view of therapy; policymakers should provide support for these therapies and the training of clinicians to provide them. Suggestions for future research include having a more generalizable population in the study, examining the impact of the study's exclusion criteria, and the impact of psychotropic medicines on treatment outcome.

Working Paper No. 09, Martin Heidegger: A Compromised Man, Mark Miller
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that Martin Heidegger registered as a compromised man in his ethics and philosophy. First, through analyzing Heidegger’s roots in Aristotle and the Pre-Socratics, this inquiry will introduce Heidegger’s philosophical compatibility with the Nazi Party. After deciphering his rectorial address in 1933 and subsequent actions during his rectorship of the University of Freiburg, this inquiry considers the level of Nazi indoctrination in Heidegger’s work. Finally, this inquiry carefully considers Heidegger’s compromised character through his actions in the post-‐rectorate phase.

When I was a kid, my sister would whistle whenever I entered a room because she knew that it bothered me. I picked up on this trick, and I use it even now that I’m older. I have a friend who gets Lady Gaga songs stuck in her head really easily, so of course I sing Lady Gaga songs at the top of my lungs so they get stuck in her head. I do this to annoy her. It’s what friends do. We poke fun at each other, and, knowing which buttons to push, we push them because it’s funny. …

Deaths Exceed Births In Record Number Of U.S. Counties, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
In this fact sheet, author Kenneth Johnson examines new data released by the Census Bureau which provide insights into the continuing influence of the Great Recession on U.S. demographic trends. He reports that, for the first time in U.S. history, deaths exceeded births in two entire states: Maine and West Virginia, and a record 36 percent of all U.S. counties experienced natural decrease in 2012. Natural decrease occurs when more deaths than births occur in an area in a given year. The growing incidence of natural decrease in America has gone largely unnoticed, but the new data demonstrate that natural …

Areal Patterns Of Possessive Morphology In The Languages Of Eurasia, Garrett K. Nay
Areal Patterns Of Possessive Morphology In The Languages Of Eurasia, Garrett K. Nay
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this study is to confirm Eurasia as an independent linguistic area with respect to four features of possessive morphology: locus of marking, position of pronominal possessive affixes, obligatory possessive inflection, and possessive classification. Raw data on these features was taken from the WALS database and then run through an algorithm of genealogical stratification called g-sampling, in order to minimize the bias of the sample. The resulting g-units were then categorized by type and geographical area (New World vs. Old World, Eurasia vs. the rest of the world). These counts were tested for significance using Fisher's exact test. …
