Facing Reality: An Experimental Approach To Ethnic Identity, Dr. Michael Findley, Dr. Daniel Nielson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The research project has been successful, overall, and we are continuing to prepare research for publication. When we recruited students to assist us with the research, we asked them to develop their own research project that they could carry out in addition to ours. Prior to leaving to South Africa in June, we helped the students develop several additional smaller projects.

International And Domestic Student Health-Information Seeking And Satisfaction, Stacy Theodora Austin Mar 2013

International And Domestic Student Health-Information Seeking And Satisfaction, Stacy Theodora Austin

Dissertations and Theses

This study examines two groups -international and domestic students at Portland State University (PSU) - in terms of their motivations to seek university-health services, and their satisfaction with university-health services. The Theory of Motivated Information Management (W. A. Afifi & Weiner, 2004) served as the foundation for this study to examine the preferences of students in terms of the ways they seek information about their health concerns. Differences in international and domestic students' anxiety, efficacy, and satisfaction with physicians were supported. International students reported more anxiety than domestic students. Domestic students reported being more efficacious than international students when talking …

Assessing Extension Education Efforts In Afghanistan Through The Eyes Of U.S. Agricultural Support Personnel, Seburn L. Pense, John W. Groninger Mar 2013

Assessing Extension Education Efforts In Afghanistan Through The Eyes Of U.S. Agricultural Support Personnel, Seburn L. Pense, John W. Groninger

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

Assessment of agricultural extension education efforts in Afghanistan was conducted through a qualitative case study of eight U.S. support personnel serving in the country. Security & access and provincial diversity were two overriding factors which determined how the three key attributes of assessment, content and process (Barrick et al., 2009) were able to function in an Afghan agricultural extension education program. Respondents indicated training should focus on young farmers and local farm demonstration sites should be essential program components. Respondents stressed recruitment of agents from local districts when this would not imperil the agents or their families. Respondents also insisted …

The research performed provided several insights and outcomes that were anticipated in the research question. By analyzing the effects of breed specific legislation (BSL) and the statistics relative to dog bites, dog shelters and rescue groups, it became clear that the BSL does not work. This case study provides extensive proof to support this conclusion.

My Night As A Sex Tourist, Chelsea E. Broe

SURGE

I’ve been studying in Copenhagen, Denmark for a few months now, and since I had a week off to travel (perks of studying abroad), I took the opportunity to spend a few nights in Amsterdam. I was traveling alone, so during my first night at the hostel in Amsterdam, when I met a woman my age who offered to show me around the city, I accepted, excited to find a traveling partner. How Nonprofit Organizations Create Public Value, Stuart Mendel Mar 2013

How Nonprofit Organizations Create Public Value, Stuart Mendel

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The scholarship on public value has emanated largely from the perspective of government and public management. As valuable as this conceptualization may be, we suggest that public value in the United States can be created by a combination of government, business and nonprofit actors. We argue that nonprofit organizations have been overlooked in the public value literature – an unfortunate reality that does not accurately reflect the nonprofit sector’s significant contributions. In many respects, creating public value is a primary raison d'etre for the American nonprofit sector. To elaborate and support this argument, we present an in-depth analysis of five …

Building Departmental Partnerships For Open Access: Scholarly Communication And Collections, Katie Wesolek, Andrew Wesolek

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

The Open Access Initiatives at Utah State University are tightly integrated with our collection development goals, and perhaps more importantly, our budget. Our collections budget provides financial support for our Bepress DigitalCommons repository, as well as funding to support our faculty authors who choose to publish in author-pays OA journals. While we recognize the important service provided by traditional publishers, our hope for the long run is to change the conversation in our library-publisher relationships such that we may eventually have remaining funds to provide even more resources to our University community. This presentation will explore the keys to the …

The Relationship Between Frequency Of Incest And Relational Outcomes With Family-Of-Origin Characteristics As A Potential Moderating Variable, Kathleen Diane Baxter Mar 2013

The Relationship Between Frequency Of Incest And Relational Outcomes With Family-Of-Origin Characteristics As A Potential Moderating Variable, Kathleen Diane Baxter

Theses and Dissertations

As we examined research on the relational effects of incest on survivors, several researchers noted that some of the negative outcomes may be moderated by certain family characteristic variables. Using RELATE data, we examined a subsample of females and males who reported being survivors of incest in childhood and compared them on key family-of-origin processes such as mother and father's marital satisfaction as well as family violence. We used a path analysis to determine whether family processes, specifically functional parents' marriage and low physical violence, moderate the relationship between incest and marital quality in adulthood. Functional family-of-origin processes significantly moderated …

Qualitative Analysis Of Women Who Make Motherwork A Career Choice: Religious Minorities, Karen Adell Jensen Mar 2013

Qualitative Analysis Of Women Who Make Motherwork A Career Choice: Religious Minorities, Karen Adell Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Interviews were conducted with 44 highly religious women from three demographics: Mennonite, Evangelical Christians and Cajun Catholics. The results provide insight into the reasons that faith appears to play a part in making motherwork a deliberate choice for many women. Comparing and contrasting the interviews within and between demographics as well as allowing for the influences of modern academia and media on attitudes toward motherwork grants voice to these often marginalized religious minorities. The resulting analysis shows that all of these women, to varying degrees, find value in motherwork. Each group seemed to have a perspective of this work which …

Countering Transient Gain Behavior In Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers: A Cross Layer Approach To Optical Networking, Sachin Sharma Mar 2013

Countering Transient Gain Behavior In Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers: A Cross Layer Approach To Optical Networking, Sachin Sharma

Theses and Dissertations

Different methods have been proposed in the literature for improving the quality and throughput performance of optical networks, decreasing the bit error rate as well as, avoiding saturation of physical layer components. With the increasing demand for high speed Internet and explosive growth in real time applications over the Internet, it is essential to determine the feasibility of establishing light paths with appropriate quality of service (QoS) using optical switching and networking. In view of today's agile Internet traffic, the next generation optical networks will consist of fibers, amplifiers, switching elements, routers and optical cross connects. Optical fibers, optical switching …

Case Study O F Three Rural Texas Superintendents As Equity Oriented Change Agents, Gerri Marie Maxwell, Leslie Ann Locke, James Joseph Scheurich

The Qualitative Report

For this qualitative case study (Patton, 2003 ), we used narrative inquiry (Erlandson, Harris, Skipper, & Allen, 1993) and sought to analyze extended interviews and field notes based on inter actions with three rural superintendents working in high - needs, public PK - 12 school districts in Texas. We collected data with regard to these superintendents’ perceptions of themselves as social justice/equity oriented change agents based on the Equity Oriented Change Agent or EOCA framework developed by Skrla, McKenzie, and Scheurich (2009). Our goal with this study was to glean greater insight into the work of these rural school leaders …

Picturing Leisure: Using Photovoice To Understand The Experience Of Leisure And Dementia, Rebecca Genoe, Sherry Dupuis Mar 2013

Picturing Leisure: Using Photovoice To Understand The Experience Of Leisure And Dementia, Rebecca Genoe, Sherry Dupuis

The Qualitative Report

Interviews and participant observation are commonly used to explore the experience of dementia, yet may not adequately capture perspectives of persons with dementia as communication changes. We used photovoice (i.e., using cameras in qualitative research) along with interviews and participant observation to explore meanings of leisure for persons with dementia. We discuss our photovoice process and the challenges we encountered, including ethical concerns, difficulty using the equipment, forgetting the context of photos, and questioning self. Despite challenges, photovoice aided in cuing memory, planning for the interview, sharing stories, and capturing meaning. We recommend further exploration of photovoice with this population.

Toward A More Inclusive Construct Of Native Chinese Speaker L2 Written Error Gravity, Steven K. Holland Mar 2013

Toward A More Inclusive Construct Of Native Chinese Speaker L2 Written Error Gravity, Steven K. Holland

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine two types of error gravity in a corpus of texts written by native Chinese learners of English (ELLs)—one that enriches the traditional construct of gravity found in error gravity research by including error frequency, or how often an error occurs in a text relative to others, as an intervening variable, and one that applies the new error gravity data in a practical way to help establish salient grammatical focal points for written corrective feedback (WCF). Previous error gravity research has suggested that the amount of irritation caused by error is determined by …

Meta-Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Biological And Non-Biological Treatments For Postpartum Depression, Sarah Jeung Soon Christian Mar 2013

Meta-Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Biological And Non-Biological Treatments For Postpartum Depression, Sarah Jeung Soon Christian

Theses and Dissertations

I provided an updated, comprehensive review of treatments for mothers diagnosed with postpartum depression. Studies included in this meta-analysis were single-group pre-posttest, non-randomized and randomized controlled studies published from 1986 to 2010 that included face-to-face psychotherapy and psychopharmacology as well as non-traditional methods such as exercise and nurse-assisted counseling. 53 published studies were analyzed. The randomized studies showed a moderate to large effects (d= 0.72 to 1.25, k= 9) when postpartum interventions were compared to a control condition, and smaller effects (d= 0.3 to 0.57, k = 13) to treatment as usual. When postpartum interventions were compared to each other …

"At The Coal-Face Of Standardization": Uncovering The Role Of Copy Editors In Standardizing The English Language, Jonathon R. Owen

Theses and Dissertations

Though much work has been done on the definition of Standard English and on the standardization process, little attention has been paid to the role of copy editors in that process. Editors comprise a class of craft professionals employed to remove errors from texts and make them more consistent, but when editors speak about editors at all, they generally rely on anecdotes rather than hard data about what editors do. Since formal written English is often used as a baseline for determining what is standard, and since corpora of published writing are increasingly used to research questions of usage, it …

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

College completion is both an individual investment and a public good. College graduates can count on higher personal income, better benefit packages, and the likelihood of living a longer, happier life. Our society can count on college graduates to be less violent, to be more economically independent, and to be more tolerant, open minded and civically engaged.
