Some Feasible Long-Run Policy Alternatives For The Agricultural Sector In Bolivia, Franklin Bruce Brown

The purpose of this paper is to construct a model that will aid in analyzing present agricultural policies along with feasible alternatives. Recently completed studies of production costs, crop prices and yields, and experimental technologies were used as sources of data. A linear programming model was used to project suggested investment for agriculture in land, labor, and capital inputs in order to achieve specific crop production targets. The paper is divided into four major parts: the theory of policy-making, the model description, the application of the model to Boliva, and the results and conclusions, in that order.

The primary objective of this study was to examine changes in resource productivity and factor shares as irrigation was introduced on small rice farms using traditional management techniques.

Average output on irrigated farms was double that of dry farms. This was because irrigated farms produced two crops as opposed to one crop on farms without irrigation. Examination of marginal products showed that farmers with irrigation could profitably use more land. Dry farmers could profitably use more labor. The low labor input and high MP of labor on dry farms occurs because these farmers are undercapitalized and are obliged to accept …

A comparison of perception of locus of control and identification of goals between delinquent and non-delinquent juvenile females was conducted.

The delinquent sample consisted of 20 female students at the Idaho State Youth Training Center. The non-delinquent sample consisted of 20 female students from two Idaho Public Secondary schools. The non-delinquent subjects were paired with the delinquent subjects as closely as possible according to age, religion, education, size and composition of family, and size of home town.

The instruments used were: (l) a background questionnaire, (2) a goal identification questionnaire, and (3) Rotter's I-E scale.

The purpose of this study is to assess children's perceptions of the nurse as they are related to children's age, the amount of contact children have had with nurses and children's sex.

An oral picture test, consisting of 10 photographs, was administered to 45 children in the Edith Bowen Elementary School at Utah State University. The children were interviewed about their perceptions of the nurses in each photograph and their responses were rated as being positive, negative or neutral.

The consumer surplus and economic rent methods of resource valuation were applied to boating recreation in Utah. Total consumer surplus and economic rent values were estimated for twenty-four boating sites. These values incorporate the relationship existing between the variable use cost and the units of activity associated with the site.

Data were collected by a mail survey directed to boaters during the 1973 boating season. Approximately 1,408 questionnaires were analyzed. Additional data were collected from the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation.

There exists clinical evidence to the effect that some cases with high -frequency sensorineural hearing loss can receive benefit through selective amplification.

At the culmination of the highly successful first annual Bridgerland Special Olympics, the author decided that more recreational activities needed to be provided for the exceptional (handicapped) children of this area. Academic and vocational programs were rapidly increasing but little was being done to help these exceptional children develop their social and recreational skills. Besides, college students found interaction with the children from the Exceptional Child Center and the Benson Instructional Workshop to be so educational and rewarding that they wanted to plan other recreational activities. The purpose of this study was to test experimentally for generalization effects to certain WISC subtests from training designed to accelerate Piagetian conservation in children.

Forty-five subjects were randomly selected for participation in this study, which involved a pretest-posttest control group design. All subjects were pretested on a Conservation Test and on the Information, Arithmetic, Picture Arrangement, and Object Assembly subtests from the WISC. In mixed fixed-ratio schedules, reinforcement is delivered according to two or more fixed-ratio components, which may be programmed in simple alternation or according to a random sequence. If the components simply alternate, the behavior is similar to that obtained in a multiple schedule. Pauses are long before long fixed ratios and short before short fixed ratios. If a random sequence is used, responding is characterized by short pauses after reinforcement independent of the size of the ratio and primes occur at the beginning of many of the fixed ratios. Two experimental studies were reported in which attempts were made to increase resistance to the negative effects of set. Set interference was measured by performance on 1) a task in which a set was experimentally induced, 2) a series of problems presumed to involve implicit sets, and 3) a test of creativity presumed to involve implicit sets.

The experimental treatments consisted of tasks which required set-breaking. An important aspect of this research was that no hints or instructions concerning sets were provided.

The objectives of this study were to measure net in- or out-migration to or from the Standard Metropolitan Areas of Utah between 1950-60 and 1960-70, and to study selected socio-economic factors relating to migration and the growth of SMSA's. Specifically, the factors of migration and natural population increase were central in an analysis of population redistribution. Selected demographic characteristics of the migrants such as sex and age were also studied to establish their impact upon the SMSA population structure. The relationship between population change in the SMSA's and economic factors of labor force supply and employment were also reviewed.

Censuses of two 20-acre plots in upper Logan Canyon, Utah, were made by the spot-mapping method during 1970 and 1971 to determine the differences in composition and density of breeding-bird populations in aspen stands of significantly different density and stature. The less dense stand of greater average d.b.h., average height and per cent ground cover had 20 breeding species totalling 615 pairs per 100 acres (expressed as equivalent territories). The more dense stand of smaller trees and brushy undergrowth had 14 breeding species with 267.5 equivalent territories per 100 acres. Nine species were found on both areas. The purpose of this study was to determine if the mothers' feelings of self-esteem influence her attitudes toward child behavior.

Two groups were studied: One group of mothers who were receiving psychotherapy, and one group who were not.

Data for this study were collected by individually interviewing twenty-five mothers who were receiving psychotherapy and twenty-five mothers who were not. The mothers were presented a standardized questionnaire with thirty-five items. The mothers' responses were evaluated and the two groups were compared.

The three main objectives in this study were: (1) to describe the foster mother's expressed reasons for taking a placement student, (2) to describe the problems and stresses associated with being an Indian placement foster mother, and (3) to describe the satisfactions and benefits of being a foster mother on the Indian Placement Program.

The sample for this study consisted of 44 foster mothers in Cache and Box Elder Counties who had had the same placement student for three or more consecutive years. The instrument utilized was a semi-structured interview with the foster mother.

Language development of pre-school children was studied as it is related to a musical tutoring experience. Nine musical tutoring sessions, in addition to those of the regular curriculum, were given to the experimental group while the control group received no such tutoring experiences.

The sample consisted of 42 families comprised of a father who was employed full-time, a mother, and three children living at home. A questionnaire was administered to each family for the purpose of describing the sample, and to determine some of their family conditions and practices.

The study compared the marital adjustment scores of young college student Mormon temple and nontemple couples. Marital adjustment scores of temple couples were significantly higher than they were for nontemple couples. Responses of 20 temple and 20 nontemple couples were analyzed controlling for age, length of marriage, income, number of children, and education. The mean marital adjustment scores did not vary significantly when each control variable was analyzed in terms of its effect on marital adjustment for temple and nontemple couples. Nontemple husbands and wives were affected differently by the various control variables.

The purpose of this paper was to determine the economic, sociopolitical, and other related factors which account for the variation in state expenditures across time. Utah was selected as the test state and data were collected from school records, political rosters, employment statistics, and a variety of federal government documents. Particular emphasis was placed on three areas: the cause-effect relationships between variables, relating the model to a body of economic theory, and demonstrating how the model may be applied in forecasting state expenditure needs.
