The purpose of this study was to determine if a variable, non-contingent reinforcement, could account for a significant amount of the effect of psychotherapy. A sample of ninety subjects was drawn from basic psychology classes and randomly assigned to six groups in a variation of the Soloman 4-group design. The treatment groups were connected to sham GSR equipment and told that when a light flashed they had made an anxiety reducing statement and were becoming more mentally healthy. In two experiments pigeons were exposed to VI and FI schedules and schedules approximating both VI and FI schedules. In experiment I, the probabilities of the VI and FI components in a Mixed FI VI schedule were manipulated to create schedule contingencies approximating simple VI or FI. In experiment II, the minimum and maximum inter-reinforcement intervals were manipulated to create schedule contingencies approximating simple VI or FI. This study was designed to discover developmental trends in task persistence (TP). It was hoped that the results would suggest when and for what groups a task persistence (TP) curriculum is crucial.

To study this development a sample of two, four, and six year old children were given a "work" task. The task required 120 subjects (Ss) to sort and fold 33 items of clothing and linen. After the task instructions and demonstration, the experimenter did not intervene with reinforcers or further directions.

This study was designed to investigate the relationship of general aptitude, vocational attitudes, and occupational values to scoring above or below the 75th percentile on the Kuder Preference Record by ninth grade students in rural southwestern Utah and southeastern Idaho.

The sample consisted of a group of 248 students who participated in Project Mace. The students were divided into two groups according to their Kuder percentile scores. Animals performing on simple fixed-ratio (FR) schedules typically pause after reinforcement delivery. The present study demonstrated systematic control of pause length in multiple fixed ratio schedules by manipulating FR size and reinforcement magnitude. In Experiment I, two adult male rabbits were stabilized on an alternating, two component, multiple FR 10 FR 10 schedule. Different colored lights were correlated with both FR components. Stability was determined and mean pause lengths were calculated as one FR component was increased in size until the schedule was FR 10 FR 50. This study was designed to: (1) determine whether the test scores on the CPI and Teacher Inventory serve as predictors of "liked" and "non-liked" teachers, and (2) determine whether various student groups (minority, Anglo, disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged) rate "liked" and "non-liked" teachers differently on each of the three variables of the Teacher Inventory.

Ninety-two sophomore students, representing race and economic factors rated the 37 teachers of required sophomore subject matter classes on a Like-Dislike Scale and the Teacher Inventory. This dissertation develops a word bank based on a series of well defined filters. The basis of this system is grapheme-phoneme relative frequency control. The word bank is designed to be used in developing reading materials at varied degrees of difficulty.

Four short stories were edited as to their grapheme-phoneme relationships. Reading speed and reading comprehension were measured for each student on these stories. All students read a story in the original form and a story in the filtered version.

No difference in reading comprehension were found, but reading speed was significantly higher on three of four stories.

Four experimental groups were chosen to represent different societal positions, namely, students, musicians, management personnel, and nonmanagement personnel. This study was concerned with the effectiveness of two different programs for teaching remedial mathematics to community college students. An individualized instruction program, making use of independent study and the small group setting, was compared with the traditional lecture-textbook instruction program to determine if there existed significant differences in (a) the rate of attrition, and (b) mathematics performance. A secondary objective was to determine if significant differences existed between students enrolled in remedial mathematics classes at 9 AM and those enrolled at 12 Noon.

The present study investigated the effects of progressive relaxation training using an abridged form of Jacobson's (1938) relaxation exercises on the mean number of nocturnal sleep disturbances in a group of psychiatric inpatients. Nocturnal time-sampling observations were made during a 14 day base line to select Ss who averaged 1.5 sleep disturbances per night. This thesis examined the basic developmental concepts , space, quantity, time, miscellaneous, as they related to family size, sex, and rural-urban environment among kindergarten children.

The Boehm Test of Basic Concepts was individually administered to 53 students from two kindergarten classes--one from Ogden City School District and one from Cache County School District.

The findings indicated that family size, sex of the child, or urban-rural environment produced no significant differences in concept development among kindergarten children.

The effects of degree of sexual homogeneity, in groups of preschool children, on performance of a task were studied. Twenty four-year-old male children from the Utah State Child Development Laboratories served as subjects. Each subject performed the task of placing pegs in a pegboard during a sixty-second time interval; once in a group of opposite-sex peers; once in a group of same-sex peers; and once on a one-to-one basis with the author.

The findings seemed to indicate that preschool children's rate of task performance is not influenced by the presence or absence of peers of the same- and opposite-sex. Differences …

Four pictures from the Tasks of Emotional Development Test were administered individually to a sample of 60 fourth grade children from two Ogden, Utah, public schools. These picture tasks were intended to encourage subjects to project their perceptions toward parents specific to the pictorial situation.

This study was designed to reveal the self perception of unwed fathers. Ten men participated in the project; nine of them were 25 years of age or younger. To measure self perception an instrument was constructed in the form of a questionnaire. Each unwed father was then interviewed to discover his perceptions, particularly as they relate to their common plight of unwed fatherhood.

The effect of tutorial instruction was studied as it influences number concept development in preschool children. The research was conducted in the Logan and Providence areas of Cache County, Utah, with 24 non-preschool four-year-old children. Twelve of the children were given tutorial experience through the use of children's flannel board stories written by the author. The stories were developed to t each the number concepts of not first or last, second, third, pair, and Medium sized.

This paper presents information obtained from 1972 and 1973 on the reproduction, survival and density of snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) in Cache National Forest, Utah. The main objectives of the study were: (1) to estimate population densities; (2) to measure adult and juvenile mortality ; and (3) to measure natality rates , including recruitment (realized annual natality).

Live-trapping and snaring were used to estimate population levels and to collect hares for necropsy. Fecal pellet counts were used to evaluate relative habitat use by hares.

This study estimated the 1972 costs and returns, and analyzed the physical response and economic relationships of corn hybrids for silage and grain production in some counties of Utah.

Average size of enterprise, land value and equipment value were estimated for silage and grain corn production in Utah.

Labor requirements for land preparation, growing and harvesting of silage and grain corn production were averaged. Net returns and costs (variable and fixed) for silage and grain corn production were computed in 30 farms of 15 counties of Utah to find the total production cost.
