Reading Landscape Meanings: State Constructions And Lived Experiences In Singapore's Chinatown, Brenda S. A. Yeoh, Lily Kong
Reading Landscape Meanings: State Constructions And Lived Experiences In Singapore's Chinatown, Brenda S. A. Yeoh, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The term 'landscape" embodies multiple levels of meaning: it articulates the ideological intent of the powerful who plan or shape the landscape in particular ways and at the same time reflects the everyday meanings implicit in the daily routines of ordinary people associated with the landscape. Through an analysis of four themes constituting the landscape of Singapore's Chinatown, we unpack two different but interdependent versions of landscape reality: the construction of social meanings from the state's perspective and those derived from the lived experiences of Chinatown's inhabitants. In our first theme, we explore the multiplicity of meanings invested in Chinatown's …
Materials Recovery Facilities In The United States Virgin Islands: A Regional Facilities Location Model Study, Lloyd O. Prince Jr.
Materials Recovery Facilities In The United States Virgin Islands: A Regional Facilities Location Model Study, Lloyd O. Prince Jr.
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Continental municipalities have derived many benefits from the economies of scale associated with a regional approach to facilities location and management planning. Centralized solid waste processing facilities is an example. Island communities, however, surrounded by miles of ocean, are constrained to a fragmented approach to the facilities location solution. This research was conducted to determine if the regional paradigm suggested in the literature is applicable to a set of island communities connected by an ocean transportation infrastructure. A linear programming (LP) model, constraints and data requirements were developed and applied to a network of islands. A series of hypothetical material …
Assessing Community Policing Theory And Practice In Halton Region (Ontario), Drazen Manojlovic
Assessing Community Policing Theory And Practice In Halton Region (Ontario), Drazen Manojlovic
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Community Policing has evolved into an alternative method of patrol for many police services in North America. Community policing seeks to increase police visibility, accessibility and communication with the community. The geographic focus of this police activity is the neighbourhood. This study surveys residents of two neighbourhoods in the Regional Municipality of Halton as well as residents from the municipalities of Oakville and Burlington. The residents’ perception of neighbourhood activity, crime and police accessibility is surveyed using a Likert Scaling method, in order to assess the relationship between these elements, which are significant in community policing theory. In most cases, …

Responsibilities Of Worksite Health Promotion Directors, Anne Bernice Mcgown Patneaude
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to identify the areas of responsibility that were perceived by worksite health promotion directors as most important to the success of their organization's health promotion program. A survey instrument was designed and mailed to 111 health promotion directors in the state of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin that were 1992 members of the Association of Fitness in Business (AFB). Subjects were asked to rate the importance that 27 responsibilities associated with four areas of competence receive within their organization. The results are based on the responses of 23 (20.72%) of these directors. Females represented 7 …

A Simultaneous Route-Level Transit Patronage Model: Demand, Supply, And Inter-Route Relationship, Zhongren Peng
A Simultaneous Route-Level Transit Patronage Model: Demand, Supply, And Inter-Route Relationship, Zhongren Peng
Dissertations and Theses
It is observed that transit riders are responding to service changes while transit planning is responding to ridership changes, or that transit patronage and service supply are highly interrelated. It is also noticed that transit riders transfer from route to route, the introduction of new service may draw some riders from the existing routes, which implies transit patronage on a route is also affected by other parallel and intersecting routes. An analytic tool is needed to examine these complex relationships in the transit system. This study has developed a quantitative model by incorporating these interactions into a simultaneous system. The …

"Creating Community Through Urban Gardening" represents the commitment of four individuals to assist the Oregon Food Bank (OFB) in its efforts to meet the food needs of the people of Oregon. The project was specifically designed to assist OFB in achieving its strategic goals which seek to "triple the amount of quality food acquired and made available to disadvantaged people" and to "impact the conditions underlying hunger and to promote the empowerment of disadvantaged people to achieve economic independence." The work of the project explored strategies for an urban gardening program that could be implemented by OFB. This report is …

An Evaluation Of The Economic Impact Of P.L., 101-336, Americans With Disabilities Act On A Community Hospital, Jean E. Craig
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Public Law 131-336, Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), is comprehensive legislation created with the intention of integrating the disable into the work place and every segment of society. Forty-three million Americans are disabled. Of these, twenty-three million seek employment, but because of discrimination are unable to find work. The law provides requirements for access to public accommodations. All disabled Americans deserve the opportunity to enjoy the same public services as the non-disabled.
Businesses are now required to provide reasonable accommodations to a disabled employee if these accommodations will allow the employee to perform the essential functions of the job. Businesses …
A Model Of Organizational Learning And Its Application To The Realities Of Public Sector Organizations, Curry Clifford
A Model Of Organizational Learning And Its Application To The Realities Of Public Sector Organizations, Curry Clifford
MPA Major Research Papers
This paper examines how organizational learning can be implemented in public sector organizations based on a comprehensive literature review. The findings reveal that because organizational learning has largely been used in the private sector and the two sectors are fundamentally different, the challenge is determining how it can be successfully implemented in the public sector.

The Employed Homeless: A Crisis In Public Policy, Frederick A. Diblasio, John R. Belcher, Kathleen A. Connors
The Employed Homeless: A Crisis In Public Policy, Frederick A. Diblasio, John R. Belcher, Kathleen A. Connors
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Departing from the conventional wisdom of who constitutes the homeless, the "employed homeless" emerge as a subgroup of the homeless population in a state-wide Maryland Study (n= 178) at 25 shelter facilities. Twenty-four percent. of the homeless were found to work fulltime and eleven percent part-time. Gender disability, health, previous mental health hospitalization, military experience and education were significantly associated with employment status in the bivariate analysis. From these exploratory findings a theory of economic dislocation is hypothesized.

Quasi-Flag Of Convenience Shipping: The Wave Of The Future, Rex S. Toh, Sock Yong Phang
Quasi-Flag Of Convenience Shipping: The Wave Of The Future, Rex S. Toh, Sock Yong Phang
Research Collection School Of Economics
Many articles and books have been written to extol the advantages and virtues of flags of convenience (FOC) shipping, argue its necessi ty, and defend the practice. However, from the earliest days there has been opposition to FOC shipping, and lately the disenchantment over this questionable form of open registry has led to the potentially rapid growth of what can be termed as quasi-FOC arrangements. This article will first briefly trace the trend from FOCs to quasi-FOCs, outline the legal framework for regulating international shipping, then discuss the problems, opposition, and legal challenges to open registries. Finally, it will trace …

Strategic Minerals In The New World Order, Kent H. Butts
Strategic Minerals In The New World Order, Kent H. Butts
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The author discusses U.S. dependence on overseas sources of strategic minerals essential to sustain its economy and defense sector. U.S. vulnerability to a loss of access to important mineral supplies is more pronounced now than at any time since World War II. The uneven distribution of strategic mineral reserves and their concentration in a handful of politically unstable countries make it essential that U.S. policymakers ensure mineral availability in the new world order. The author considers the geographical imbalance of mineral trade patterns, evaluates the stability of the major strategic mineral producing countries, and assesses the potential for mineral supply …

Victim No.1 was sitting with his legs splayed leaning forward, holding the mine with his left hand when the booster charge detonated. He lost a finger, the top of two others and part of the thumb on his left hand, and was also injured above the eye. Victim No.2 suffered superficial injuries "to his hand and head" [from which it seems likely that both deminers had a hand on or near the device when it detonated].

Determining The Property Value Impact Of Landfills, Okwuchukwu Gerald Uba
Determining The Property Value Impact Of Landfills, Okwuchukwu Gerald Uba
Dissertations and Theses
The decline in property value can be due to owner's act or exogenous act from the operation of landfills. Landfill neighbors, especially home owners, perceive landfill operation to pose environmental safety problem such as ground water contamination and methane gas leakage that could affect home value.
Owners of landfills, especially those landfills that accept only dry waste (limited purpose landfill), claim that since their facilities meet the requirements of environmental regulations and the type of waste they accept could not possibly produce methane gas and leachate there is no property value impact of their facilities.
Several studies have shown that …

Indirect Transfers In Trade Among Former Soviet Union Republics: Sources, Patterns, And Policy Responses In The Post-Soviet Period, Lucjan T. Orlowski
Indirect Transfers In Trade Among Former Soviet Union Republics: Sources, Patterns, And Policy Responses In The Post-Soviet Period, Lucjan T. Orlowski
WCBT Faculty Publications
Reports on indirect transfers in trade among the former Soviet Union Republics. The Former Soviet Union (FSU) was composed of 15 republics which were very unevenly endowed with human, physical and natural resources. To contain regional imbalances within the Union and to integrate all republics into a tight and centrally commanded division of labour, the central government operated a scheme of vertical fiscal redistribution between the Union budget and the republican budgets. Through this system poorer republics became net receivers of direct transfers and richer republics became net donors. This scheme, which collapsed with the dissolution of the Union in …
