Arturo Alessandri And The Chilean Presidential Elections Of 1920: A Thesis, Sally Ann Jones May 1968

Arturo Alessandri And The Chilean Presidential Elections Of 1920: A Thesis, Sally Ann Jones

Dissertations and Theses

After rising to a position of political and economic importance among the Latin American republics of the nineteenth century, Chile lost that leadership in the early 1900's, much to the consternation of her leading statesmen and intellectuals. The economic dislocation following World War I exacerbated the already serious social conditions, while at the same the traditionally passive lower classes started to demand a voice in the management of their own affairs. The existing governmental system had proved itself powerless to solve the pressing problems facing the country at every turn. Chile desperately needed new leadership; the time was perfect for …

A Comparative Study Of Utah's Primary Elections, Owen B. Daw May 1968

A Comparative Study Of Utah's Primary Elections, Owen B. Daw

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The advantage of the incumbent in gaining re-nomination and voter participation in primary elections was studied. Six states, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Montana, and Washington were used as examples of different types of primaries during the years compared.

There seemed to be no significant difference in the voter participation between the open and closed primaries. The other factors which influence voting behavior affected voter turnout more than the type of primary did.

The incumbent advantage was slightly greater in the open primary, but not enough to be statistically significant.

The closed primary of 1966 in Utah did affect the …

Collective Bargaining In Utah's Council-Manager Municipalities, Ronald L. Mckim May 1968

Collective Bargaining In Utah's Council-Manager Municipalities, Ronald L. Mckim

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The collective bargaining practices among Utah's council-manager municipalities was studied through a review of existing literature and two surveys, one of which focused upon the policies and practices of Utah's fourteen municipalities governed under the council-manager system and having a population of 2,000 or more. The second survey was a microcosmic study of Ogden City's collective bargaining practices as defined by administrators and employee representatives.

The first survey involving the collective bargaining practices of Utah's fourteen council-manager municipalities indicated that two factors were present. They are: (1) formal employee organizations existed in areas with the largest and densest population structures, …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

WHEN ASKED by the director of one of our growing university presses how the "mystique" of THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY was created, the present editor pointed at once to the names listed on the title page, singling out for particular notice that of our former editor-in-chief, Dudley T. Comish, whose eight years of editing have put their indelible stamp on the journal.
