The Thomistic Influence In Colombian Political Ideology, Jimmie Michael Dodson Aug 1968

The Thomistic Influence In Colombian Political Ideology, Jimmie Michael Dodson

Political Science ETDs

This thesis examines Colombian political ideology, as expressed through a body of political literature, in an effort to ascertain the presence of a Thomistic-Neo-Thomistic influence. That Thomistic influence is considered, for the purposes of this paper, to have a conservative effect on the political ideology of the nation.

This objective is undertaken first by the establishment of a model of Thomistic-Neo-Thomistic thought. The model draws together and explicates the basic elements of a medieval Catholic world view with respect to persistent political issues. It is hypothesized that this theoretical framework will be evident in the rhetoric and orientation of the …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

DURING TIMES of incessant change any practice or custom that maintains itself for as long as six years may fairly claim to be a hallowed tradition. Just such a tradition THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY is building for itself with this sixth Summer Literary Number. Not that we ever wholly close our pages to a good study of literature at other seasons of the year, and not that our literary number involves any really basic difference from the other three quarterly issues. The emphasis, the approach, may vary somewhat, but all four issues are alike concerned with …

Joseph Rogers Underwood - A Representative Nineteenth Century American, Ralph Ward Brashear Jun 1968

Joseph Rogers Underwood - A Representative Nineteenth Century American, Ralph Ward Brashear

History Theses

Many men throughout history have been on the verge of greatness only to pass into oblivion because of convictions which would not let them compromise with expediency. Joseph Rogers Underwood was such a man, for he placed great importance upon duty, integrity and responsibility. The high values which he placed upon these virtues cost him the renomination for senator by the Kentucky Legislature in 1851. As the Louisville Daily Democrat, an opposition newspaper, so brilliantly stated about this election:

"The whig (sic) party in the Legislature have at last compromised the divisions among themselves, and elected a Senator nobody …

Interest Group Lobbying In The 1967 New Mexico State Legislature, Richard Gordon Frederick

Political Science ETDs

This thesis is an investigation of interest group lobbying 1n the 1967 New Mexico State Legislature. Although the study principally describes interest group activity, a theoretical background of group study is its point of departure.

From a consideration of the group approach to politics, the research design of the investigation, which emphasizes personal 1nterv1ews, is developed. After this formal background, the thesis commences to describe New Mexico lobbies and their principal method of operation.

Nullification And Interposition Within The Constitutional Context, Karen Diane Tipton May 1968

Nullification And Interposition Within The Constitutional Context, Karen Diane Tipton

Political Science ETDs

A distinction is made between nullification as a legal-theoretical doctrine and interposition as an operational-activist doctrine. Nullification and interposition are interpretations of the primary issue in popular government which is the question of the proper relationship between the majority and the minority. The federal principle is a compromise between the unitary principle and the confederate principle. Opposing positions grew out of this compromise which were best articulated on the one hand by John C. Calhoun and John Taylor of Caroline and on the other by Daniel Webster and John Marshall. The advocates of state supremacy relied upon the contract theory …
