The Two Koreas: Prospects For Economic Cooperation And Integration, Marcus Noland

After nearly a half century of strident adherence to the principles of socialism and self-reliance, North Korea may be on the verge of opening itself to outside aid and advice. Motivators include a decade of economic trouble punctuated by declining output and famine as well as underdeveloped infrastructures and reduction in foreign trade and material support. The limits of national selfsufficiency may finally have become admissible in North Korea, as evidenced by recent diplomatic negotiations and cooperative commercial projects with capitalist nations. Symbolic Racism In The 1995 Louisiana Gubernatorial Election, Jonathan Knuckley, Byron D. Orey
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
In this paper we explore the effects of symbolic racism on the intended vote choice of whites by examining a white-on-black statewide election. It is argued that symbolic racial attitudes will be activated in a white-on-black election simply because of the mere presence of a black candidate. Methods. The white prospective vote for a white racially conservative candidate is examined using survey data from the 1995 Louisiana gubernatorial runoff conducted by the University of New Orleans Survey Research Center. Results. Symbolic racism was a strong predictor of intended vote choice, even after controlling for partisan identification and self-identified political philosophy. …

From the Dengist leadership onwards, China sought to increase its capabilities - economic, military, and diplomatic - in its quest for great power status in the international system. Internally, China began a series of domestic reforms in the economic, military and high-technology areas. Externally, China directed unusual energy to establishing normal relations with other major powers as well as with the Third World. These actions testify to the Chinese leadership’s aspirations and determination to build China into a strong nation.
