Children And Political Socialization: Parental Influence On Children's Political Knowledge, Susan Piper May 1973

Children And Political Socialization: Parental Influence On Children's Political Knowledge, Susan Piper

Student Scholarship

This research paper explores the process of political socialization, specifically examining how political orientations, attitudes, and values are transmitted from parents to children. The author argues that political beliefs begin to form much earlier than traditionally assumed, with the period between ten and eighteen months being critical for intellectual development and fifty percent of intelligence being set by age four. Because children are highly dependent on the family for physical and emotional needs, they readily adopt the political identities and value systems of their parents to gain approval and avoid conflict.

The document includes a study of 235 children in …

Indexes measuring the teacher's sense of political efficacy, political participation, and extent to which they felt political behavior was professionally ethical were used. The data was gathered through personal interviews with a systematic …

Mormon Myth Or Monopoly: A Contemporary Study To Determine The Perceived Influence Of The Mormon Church On Utah Politics, Douglas S. Foxley May 1973

Mormon Myth Or Monopoly: A Contemporary Study To Determine The Perceived Influence Of The Mormon Church On Utah Politics, Douglas S. Foxley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes, opinions, and beliefs of Utah residents concerning what role, if any, the L.D.S. Church should play in Utah politics; if they believe in the concept of a separation of church and state; whether they feel a separation of church and state exists in Utah; and how much influence they perceive the predominant faith of the state has on its politics.

Thus, the four following hypotheses were designed:

1. Utah residents will perceive that churches should be involved in moral, but not political issues.

2. Utah residents will perceive that there …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

SPRING hopes eternally. We misquote with deliberation, thinking our rearrangement of Pope's line no less true to human nature and considerably more cheerful, whereupon we ask ourselves whether our springtime mood borrows any color from the contents of this April issue of THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY. Despite the foreboding subtitle "Tenacity in the Pursuit of Folly," there is a guarded optimism in the conclusion made by D. E. SHEPARDSON to his study of American policy in Asia, and ROLLAND DEWING might be said to be determinedly hopeful about "The Limits of Economic Expansion." Deploring the ethnocentricity …

The Venezuelan Senate:A Legislative Body In The Context Of Development., Russell Lynn Kelley Feb 1973

The Venezuelan Senate:A Legislative Body In The Context Of Development., Russell Lynn Kelley

Political Science ETDs

Until recently little information has been available in English on Latin America's national legislatures. This study was undertaken to provide substantive knowledge about the Senate, and the role it plays, ' in the political system of Venezuela; and to permit the development of more accurate general theory on the legislative process.

Field research conducted in 1968-1969 concentrated upon the Senate's institutional development in the post dictatorial period. Specifically, the Senate of the 1964- 1969 constitutional term was analyzed in depth. For this purpose, the Senate was conceptualized as a subsystem with linkages to the political system. Two main sources of …
