Food Trade And Aid, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1975

Food Trade And Aid, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

The key question on food policy in the world today is how we can get maximum effective output from the world's agriculture in the years ahead. ·World food production will likely need to double in the next 25 years if we are going to meet the needs of the world's rapidly growing population and to provide the higher standard of eating that so many of the world's peoples desire.

We cannot attain that level of efficient food production without a far more efficient and effective world agriculture than we have today.

The Social Basis Of Trust In Government, Ghulam M. Haniff Jan 1975

The Social Basis Of Trust In Government, Ghulam M. Haniff

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The relationship between the attitude of trust in government and socio-economic characteristics of the respondents is examined . Survey research data permit an empirical assessment of political trust as the dependent variable . The concept of political trust is operationalized through an interview question, and the independent variable is given empirical reference by the use of demographic data. The evidence suggests that a low level of political trust is pervasive throughout all the segments of the American society and that trust in government is not highly correlated with any social group.

D. J. "Joe" Saia: The Padrone Of Crawford County Politics, Steven K. Baden Jan 1975

D. J. "Joe" Saia: The Padrone Of Crawford County Politics, Steven K. Baden

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

D. J. "Joe" Saia, of Frontenac, Kansas, has been county commissioner and the leader of the Democratic Party in Crawford County, Kansas, for the past three decades. An unemployed coal miner with an eighth-grade education, the county commissioner from Frontenac came from the bottom of the social pyramid. He was able, through his adaptability, tenacity, basic understanding of human nature, and undying concern for those in need, to fight his way to the position of chairman of the Crawford County Board of Commissioners and the leader of a successful political organization.

The road to power was not an easy path, …

Bryan, Populism And Utah, Herbert E. Cihak Jan 1975

Bryan, Populism And Utah, Herbert E. Cihak

Theses and Dissertations

William Jennings Bryan exercised great political power for thirty years in America. Through his efforts the Democratic Party power base was broadened to include Jews, Negroes businessmen, and farmers. Bryan's call for political and social reform found many supporters in the State of Utah.

It is difficult to assess what actually caused William J. Bryan to lose the 1900 Presidential election in Utah. Yet, we must put to rest the conclusion that he lost solely because silver was an unimportant issue to the Utah electorate in 1900. The powerful influence of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on …

The Labyrinth Of Otherness : An Essay On Authoritarian Acquiescence In Mexico, Mary Elizabeth Scott Jan 1975

The Labyrinth Of Otherness : An Essay On Authoritarian Acquiescence In Mexico, Mary Elizabeth Scott

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In this inquiry, the attempt is made first to see Mexico through the eyes of Octavio Paz, who in his essay, The Other Mexico: Critique of the Pyramid, considers the development of modern Mexico from a cultural, historical and political perspective and secondly to interface a universal archetype with the Mexican experience. Regarding the first endeavor, it is Paz’s intention to bring his nation to a better understanding of its own peculiar dilemmas and to indicate changes of attitudes essential for salutary future progress. It is true that as Mexico’s renowned poet, essayist, playwright, editor and diplomat, Paz treats the …

Hannah Arendt And The Reassertion Of The Political: Toward A New Democratic Theory, James T. Knauer Jan 1975

Hannah Arendt And The Reassertion Of The Political: Toward A New Democratic Theory, James T. Knauer

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The present state of democratic theory is one of confusion and change. Pluralism remains a virtual orthodoxy among political scientists and political theorists, but there is an increasing interest in participatory theories that are critical of pluralism as an elitist theory of democracy. This critique of pluralism is combined with a new concern for man the citizen and a belief that under present conditions and according to orthodox theories the legitimate activity of citizenship is attenuated to the point of nonexistence. This dissertation grows out of just such a concern for citizenship and out of a conviction that elitist democratic …
