Defence Policy And The Unification Of The Canadian Armed Forces: An Analysis, John C. Hood
Defence Policy And The Unification Of The Canadian Armed Forces: An Analysis, John C. Hood
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis paper is an analysis of the relationship between defence policy and the unification of the Canadian Armed Forces. While much of the literature and commentary in recent years has centered upon the ‘management’ aspects of unification, this thesis argues that unification was devised in order to re-assert civilian control and direction over the services. Unification then, affects not only the administration of the services, but also, the ‘structuring of influence’ between the civilian authority and the defence establishment, which in turn contributes to the method through which defence priorities are determined.
The thesis also examines the congruence between …
Schlagende Verbindungen: Modern Communitarians?, R.G.S. Weber
Schlagende Verbindungen: Modern Communitarians?, R.G.S. Weber
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The study of communities and the concept of communitarianism have occupied the thoughts and works of many of the foremost social scientists of our time. However, societal integration through ties to clan and family lie on the other side of the Industrial Revolution and our own contemporary mass society calls for ever increasing liberation of the individual from his primary allegiances. Liberal individualism orients man away from any commitment other than to that of self fulfillment, accomplished more often than not through material ends. Thus we find that the study of communitarianism has grown out of a disenchantment with individualism. …

The Illinois Appellate System Procedure And Practice, Robert L. Kamholz Jr.
The Illinois Appellate System Procedure And Practice, Robert L. Kamholz Jr.
Honors Projects
The appellate procedure and practice which characterize the Illinois judicial system comprise an awesome body of factual material which is, I am certain, impossible to present in one volume no matter how bulky it may be. This volume does not attempt to describe the whole of that procedure. It also is not a guide suitable for legal reference. It is, however, a general description of the superficial workings of the Illinois appellate system. In most cases, procedure is the only topic of discussion. What substantive information there is contained in the discussion exists to shed light on how the practice …

Luke Pryor Blackburn: The Good Samaritan, Nancy Baird
Luke Pryor Blackburn: The Good Samaritan, Nancy Baird
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Luke Pryor Blackburn, Kentucky’s only physician governor, is one of the forgotten public health figures of the 19th century. As health officer of Natchez in the 1850s he instituted the first effective quarantine used in the Mississippi Valley and became a strong advocate of its use as a preventive measure in the control of yellow fever. During his lifetime Blackburn also became well known for his unselfish aid to communities stricken with the disease.
In March 1878 announced his candidacy for governor of his native state. Local politicians scoffed at his chances for election, but his actions during the …

The Federal Role In Public School Desegregation Under The Nixon Administration January 1969 To June 1972, Diane C. Goldfarb
Political Science ETDs
The problem with which this study is concerned is the federal administrative role in public school desegregation from January 1969 to June 1972, encompassing the first three and one-half years of the Richard M. Nixon administration. Public school desegregation has been examined here from the standpoint of its symbolic political significance and its relation to substantive progress in the field. To do this I have referred to several premises put forth by Murray Edelman in The Symbolic Uses of Politics, particularly those dealing with symbolism as a means of resolving tension and with symbolic versus tangible action in government administration. …
