The Future Of Natural Selection Knowledge Measurement: A Reply To Anderson Et Al. (2010), Ross Nehm, Irvin Sam Schonfeld
Publications and Research
The development of rich, reliable, and robust measures of the composition, structure, and stability of student thinking about core scientific ideas (such as natural selection) remains a complex challenge facing science educators. In their recent article (Nehm & Schonfeld 2008), the authors explored the strengths, weaknesses, and insights provided by a detailed exploration of three commonly used measures of student thinking about natural selection in a large sample of underrepresented minority students. One of their core findings was that all of the tools they studied--including the CINS--have strengths and weaknesses that must be carefully taken into consideration by those …

More recently, we held our last Patron’s Day with Singapore’s former President S.R. Nathan as Patron, and I look forward to greeting President Tony Tan as our new Patron. It has also been a year in which we left behind the role of …

Pengamalan Solat Fardhu Di Kalangan Mahasiswa Di Tati University College (Tatiuc), Kemaman, Terengganu., Hilmi Ismail
Student Works (2010-2019)
Performing the prayer (solat) is the second commandment in Islam after uttering the syahadah. It is the bollard for all religious worship in Islam for its state as a religion mast. It acts as armour against any wrong deed towards Allah SWT. People begin to question the efficacy of prayer by Muslims due to the diminished morality witnessed nowadays. Thus, this research was conducted to observe the adaptation of prayer among the students of TATi University College, Kemaman, Terengganu. This research focuses on the intellectual group that were identified as a ‘Mukallaf’, due to the Islamic prospect that was shown …

Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy: Identification And Intervention, Alexandra Elizabeth Walk, Susan C. Davies
Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications
Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP), also known as “factitious disorder by proxy,” is a mental illness in which a person lies about the physical or mental well-being of a person he/she is responsible for (The Cleveland Clinic, 2008). Most often the dynamic transpires between a mother and her child. The motivation behind MSBP is that the adult seeks the attention typically given to those who are sick, and attempts to get the attention by causing or lying about illness in his/her child. MSBP is a type of child abuse and can result in long-term physical and psychological effects or even …

Findings based on qualitative analyses indicated that parents and family were instrumental in students' learning about care and a combination of …
Intra-Sectoral Diversity : A Political Economy Of Thai Private Higher Education, Prachayani Praphamontripong
Intra-Sectoral Diversity : A Political Economy Of Thai Private Higher Education, Prachayani Praphamontripong
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Private higher education (PHE) worldwide has been a rapid development in the last several decades. The private sector will continue to grow, diversify and undoubtedly play a significant role in the political economy of higher education. Nevertheless, systematically empirical studies on the trio relationships among PHE, institutional diversity and political economy are still miniscule, especially outside the U.S. In Thailand, studies on even public higher education utilizing international literature are rare, as is research with a macro-level empirical analysis of private-public comparison. Thus, this study focuses on the fundamental differences among Thai private higher education institutions (PHEIs) and between private …

Competent Public Speaking: Assessing Skill Development In The Basic Course, Judy C. Pearson, Jeffrey T. Child, Liliana L. Herakova, Julie L. Semlak, Jessica Angelos
Basic Communication Course Annual
Effective public speaking skills are essential for a successful life. The authors provide an overall assessment of the basic public speaking course by examining fifteen student attributes divided into three categories (course engagement characteristics, dispositions, and demographics) hypothesized to affect learning and public speaking skill development in the basic course. A four-step hierarchical multiple regression tested two research questions (N = 709). Course engagement characteristics improved students’ public-speaking grade averages, but dispositions did not. The effects of demographic characteristics, particularly biological sex, were not eliminated after controlling for course engagement and dispositional factors (twelve variables). Implications and limitations of the …

Assessing Preemptive Argumentation In Students’ Persuasive Speech Outlines, Kevin R. Myer, Ryan R. Kurtz, Jamie L. Hines, Cheri J. Simonds, Stephen K. Hunt
Basic Communication Course Annual
The purpose of the present study was to determine if critical thinking skills, a key component of basic communication course pedagogy, can be assessed through students’ use of preemptive argumentation. Persuasive speech outlines were coded to determine if preemptive argumentation was present in students’ speeches and to determine the quality of preemptive argumentation. The results indicated that the majority of outlines contained preemptive argumentation. However, of those speeches containing preemptive argumentation, the majority of outlines employed low-quality preemptive argumentation. Finally, the findings revealed that the quality of preemptive argumentation employed in the persuasive speech outlines did not predict the students’ …
