Alignment Of The (3D104S5S)3S1 State Of Zn Excited By Polarized Electron Impact, Nathan B. Clayburn, Timothy J. Gay Sep 2017

Alignment Of The (3D104S5S)3S1 State Of Zn Excited By Polarized Electron Impact, Nathan B. Clayburn, Timothy J. Gay

Timothy J. Gay Publications

We measure the integrated Stokes parameters of light from Zn (4s4p)43P0,1-(4s5s)53S1 transitions excited by a transversely polarized electron impact at energies between 7.0 and 8.5 eV. Our results for the electron-polarization-normalized linear polarization Stokes parameter P2, between incident electron energies 7.0 and 7.4 eV, are consistent with zero, as required by basic angular-momentum coupling considerations and by recent theoretical calculations. They are in qualitative disagreement with previous experimental results for the P2 parameter.

Three-Dimensional Nanomagnetism, Amalio Fernández-Pacheco, Robert Streubel, Olivier Fruchart, Riccardo Hertel, Peter Fischer, Russell P. Cowburn

Robert Streubel Papers

Magnetic nanostructures are being developed for use in many aspects of our daily life, spanning areas such as data storage, sensing and biomedicine. Whereas patterned nanomagnets are traditionally two-dimensional planar structures, recent work is expanding nanomagnetism into three dimensions; a move triggered by the advance of unconventional synthesis methods and the discovery of new magnetic effects. In three-dimensional nanomagnets more complex magnetic configurations become possible, many with unprecedented properties. Here we review the creation of these structures and their implications for the emergence of new physics, the development of instrumentation and computational methods, and exploitation in numerous applications.

Robert Streubel Papers

We report an x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy method that exploits the recent development of the two-pulse mode at the Linac Coherent Light Source. By using coherent resonant x-ray magnetic scattering, we studied spontaneous fluctuations on nanosecond time scales in thin films of multilayered Fe/Gd that exhibit ordered stripe and Skyrmion lattice phases. The correlation time of the fluctuations was found to differ between the Skyrmion phase and near the stripe-Skyrmion boundary. This technique will enable a significant new area of research on the study of equilibrium fluctuations in condensed matter.

On Syntropy & Precognitive Interdiction Based On Wheeler-Feynman’S Absorber Theory, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Yunita Umniyati

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

It has been known for long time that intuition plays significant role in many professions and human life, including in entrepreneurship, government, and also in detective or law enforcement activities. Women are known to possess better intuitive feelings or “hunch” compared to men. Despite these examples, such a precognitive interdiction is hardly accepted in established science. In this letter, we discuss briefly the advanced solutions of Maxwell equations, and then explore plausible connection between syntropy and precognition.

Improvements In Four-Dimensional And Dual Energy Computed To Mography, Rachael M. Martin Aug 2017

Improvements In Four-Dimensional And Dual Energy Computed To Mography, Rachael M. Martin

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Dual energy and 4D computed tomography (CT) seek to address some of the limitations in traditional CT imaging. Dual energy CT, among other purposes, allows for the quantification and improved visualization of contrast materials, and 4D CT is often used in radiation therapy applications as it allows for the visualization and quantification of object motion. While much research has been done with these technologies, areas remain for potential improvement, both in preclinical and clinical settings, which will be explored in this dissertation. Preclinical dual energy cone-beam CT (CBCT) can benefit from wider separation between the peak energy of the two …

Simulation Of Alnico Coercivity, Liqin Ke, Ralph Skomski, Todd D. Hoffman, Lin Zhoue, Wei Tang, Duane D. Johnson, Matthew J. Kramer, Iver E. Anderson, C.Z. Wang Jul 2017

Simulation Of Alnico Coercivity, Liqin Ke, Ralph Skomski, Todd D. Hoffman, Lin Zhoue, Wei Tang, Duane D. Johnson, Matthew J. Kramer, Iver E. Anderson, C.Z. Wang

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Micromagnetic simulations of alnico show substantial deviations from Stoner-Wohlfarth behavior due to the unique size and spatial distribution of the rod-like Fe-Co phase formed during spinodal decomposition in an external magnetic field. The maximum coercivity is limited by single-rod effects, especially deviations from ellipsoidal shape, and by interactions between the rods. Both the exchange interaction between connected rods and magnetostatic interaction between rods are considered, and the results of our calculations show good agreement with recent experiments. Unlike systems dominated by magnetocrystalline anisotropy, coercivity in alnico is highly dependent on size, shape, and geometric distribution of the Fe-Co phase, all …

Mathematical Description And Mechanistic Reasoning: A Pathway Toward Stem Integration, Paul J. Weinberg Jul 2017

Mathematical Description And Mechanistic Reasoning: A Pathway Toward Stem Integration, Paul J. Weinberg

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Because reasoning about mechanism is critical to disciplined inquiry in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) domains, this study focuses on ways to support the development of this form of reasoning. This study attends to how mechanistic reasoning is constituted through mathematical description. This study draws upon Smith’s (2007) characterization of mathematical description of scientific phenomena as ‘‘bootstrapping,’’ where negotiating the relationship between target phenomena and represented relations is fundamental to learning. In addition, the development of mathematical representation presents a viable pathway towards STEM integration. In this study, participants responded to an assessment of mechanistic reasoning while cognitive interviews …

The Analysis And The Three-Dimensional, Forward-Fit Modeling Of The Hard X-Ray And The Microwave Emissions Of Major Solar Flares, Natsuha Kuroda Jul 2017

The Analysis And The Three-Dimensional, Forward-Fit Modeling Of The Hard X-Ray And The Microwave Emissions Of Major Solar Flares, Natsuha Kuroda

Dissertations

Solar flares are one of the most violent and energetic space weather events that are known to cause various adverse effects on the Earth. One of the major problems that must be solved to understand flares and to be able to predict their magnitudes is how the particles in the solar atmosphere are accelerated after the magnetic reconnection. One way to help solve this problem is to investigate the properties of the high energy electrons produced during the flare impulsive phase, observed in the hard X-ray (HXR) and microwave (MW). The two emissions are considered to be produced by a …

One-Step Laser-Induced Hydrogen Generation From Coal Powders In Water, Dovletgeldi Seyitliyev Jul 2017

One-Step Laser-Induced Hydrogen Generation From Coal Powders In Water, Dovletgeldi Seyitliyev

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study presents a simple way of obtaining hydrogen gas (H2) from various ranks of coal, coke, and graphite using nanosecond laser pulses. Powder samples of coal and graphite with and without water were irradiated with 1064 nm and 532 nm pulses from an Nd: YAG laser for 45 minutes under air and argon atmospheres. It was observed that 532 nm laser pulses were more effective than 1064 nm pulses in gas generation and both were nonlinearly correlated with respect to the laser energy density. Mainly hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO) were observed. The H2 to CO ratio shows …

Vortex Circulation Patterns In Planar Microdisk Arrays, Sven Velten, Robert Streubel, Alan Farhan, Noah Kent, Mi Young Im, Andreas Scholl, Scott Dhuey, Carolin Behncke, Guido Meier, Peter Fischer Jun 2017

Vortex Circulation Patterns In Planar Microdisk Arrays, Sven Velten, Robert Streubel, Alan Farhan, Noah Kent, Mi Young Im, Andreas Scholl, Scott Dhuey, Carolin Behncke, Guido Meier, Peter Fischer

Robert Streubel Papers

We report a magnetic X-ray microscopy study of the pattern formation of circulation in arrays of magnetic vortices ordered in a hexagonal and a honeycomb lattice. In the honeycomb lattice, we observe at remanence an ordered phase of alternating circulations, whereas in the hexagonal lattice, small regions of alternating lines form. A variation in the edge-to-edge distance shows that the size of those regions scales with the magnetostatic interaction. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that the patterns result from the formation of flux closure states during the nucleation process.

Review Of Optical Detection Of Single Molecules Beyond The Diffraction And Diffusion Limit Using Plasmonic Nanostructures, Farzia Karim, Todd B. Smith, Chenglong Zhao Jun 2017

Review Of Optical Detection Of Single Molecules Beyond The Diffraction And Diffusion Limit Using Plasmonic Nanostructures, Farzia Karim, Todd B. Smith, Chenglong Zhao

Physics Faculty Publications

Single-molecule detection has become a unique and indispensable tool for the study of molecular motions and interactions at the single-molecule level. Unlike ensemble measurement where the information is averaged, single-molecule analysis yields invaluable information on both the individual molecular properties and their microenvironment. Among the various technologies for the detection of single molecules, the detection with optical methods has many advantages in terms of its high sensitivity, electrical passiveness, and robustness. The recent advances in the engineering of either the excitation light or the solution of the molecules have paved the way for enhanced single-molecule detection. We present recent developments …

On-Sight Shifting At The Cryogenic Underground Observatory For Rare Events, Aaron C. Wong Jun 2017

On-Sight Shifting At The Cryogenic Underground Observatory For Rare Events, Aaron C. Wong

Physics

During the summer of 2016, four Cal Poly students traveled to Assergi, Italy to contribute to the CUORE collaboration which is in search of a rare process called neutrinoless double beta decay. If detected, neutrinoless double beta decay will make break throughs in particle and nuclear physics, and will be the first observation of lepton number violation. The Cal Poly students provided on-sight shifting support during the installation phase of the project. This is a breakdown of the physics behind CUORE and Cal Poly's contribution.

Asymptotic Behavior Of Waves In A Nonuniform Medium, Nezam Iraniparast, Lan Nguyen, Mikhail Khenner Jun 2017

Asymptotic Behavior Of Waves In A Nonuniform Medium, Nezam Iraniparast, Lan Nguyen, Mikhail Khenner

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

An incoming wave on an infinite string, that has uniform density except for one or two jump discontinuities, splits into transmitted and reflected waves. These waves can explicitly be described in terms of the incoming wave with changes in the amplitude and speed. But when a string or membrane has continuous inhomogeneity in a finite region the waves can only be approximated or described asymptotically. Here, we study the cases of monochromatic waves along a nonuniform density string and plane waves along a membrane with nonuniform density. In both cases the speed of the physical system is assumed to tend …

Thermal Stress Analysis In A Functionally Graded Hollow Elliptic-Cylinder Subjected To Uniform Temperature Distribution, V. R. Manthena, N. K. Lamba, G. D. Kedar Jun 2017

Thermal Stress Analysis In A Functionally Graded Hollow Elliptic-Cylinder Subjected To Uniform Temperature Distribution, V. R. Manthena, N. K. Lamba, G. D. Kedar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, an analytical method of a thermoelastic problem for a medium with functionally graded material properties is developed in a theoretical manner for the elliptic-cylindrical coordinate system under the assumption that the material properties except for Poisson’s ratio and density are assumed to vary arbitrarily with the exponential law in the radial direction. An attempt has been made to reconsider the fundamental system of equations for functionally graded solids in a two-dimensional state under thermal and mechanical loads. The general solution of displacement formulation is obtained by the introduction of appropriate transformation and carried out the analysis by …

Numerical Simulation Of The Phase Space Of Jupiter-Europa System Including The Effect Of Oblateness, Vinay Kumar, Beena R. Gupta, Rajiv Aggarwal Jun 2017

Numerical Simulation Of The Phase Space Of Jupiter-Europa System Including The Effect Of Oblateness, Vinay Kumar, Beena R. Gupta, Rajiv Aggarwal

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We have numerically investigated the phase space of the Jupiter-Europa system in the framework of a Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem. In our model, Jupiter is taken as oblate primary. We have considered time-frequency analysis (TFA) based on wavelets and the Poincare Surface of Section (PSS) for the characterization of orbits in the Jupiter-Europa model. We have exploited both cases: a system with and without considering the effect of oblateness. Graphs (ridge-plots) explaining the phenomenon of resonance trapping, a difference between chaotic sticky orbit and the non-sticky orbit, and periodic and quasi-periodic orbit are presented. Our results of Poincare surfaces of …

Damping In Microscale Modified Couple Stress Thermoelastic Circular Kirchhoff Plate Resonators, Rajneesh Kumar, Shaloo Devi, Veena Sharma

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The vibrations of circular plate in modified couple stress thermoelastic medium using Kirchhoff- Love plate theory has been presented. The basic equations of motion and heat conduction equation for Lord Shulman (L-S, 1967) theory are written with the help of Kirchhoff-Love plate theory. The thermoelastic damping of micro beam resonators is studied by applying normal mode analysis method. The solutions for the free vibrations of plates under clamped, simply supported and free boundary conditions are obtained. The analytical expressions for thermoelastic damping of vibration and frequency shift are obtained for generalized couple stress thermoelastic and coupled thermoelastic plates. Numerical results …

Effect Of Nonlinear Thermal Radiation On Mhd Chemically Reacting Maxwell Fluid Flow Past A Linearly Stretching Sheet, A. M. Ramireddy, J. V. Ramana Reddy, N. Sandeep, V. Sugunamma Jun 2017

Effect Of Nonlinear Thermal Radiation On Mhd Chemically Reacting Maxwell Fluid Flow Past A Linearly Stretching Sheet, A. M. Ramireddy, J. V. Ramana Reddy, N. Sandeep, V. Sugunamma

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This communication addresses the influence of nonlinear thermal radiation on magneto hydrodynamic Maxwell fluid flow past a linearly stretching surface with heat and mass transfer. The effects of heat generation/absorption and chemical reaction are taken into account. At first, we converted the governing partial differential equations into nonlinear ordinary differential equations with the help of suitable similarity transformations and solved by using Runge-Kutta based shooting technique. Further, the effects of various physical parameters on velocity, temperature and concentration fields were discussed thoroughly with the help of graphs obtained by using bvp5c MATLAB package. In view of many engineering applications we …

Two-Dimensional Model Of Nanoparticle Deposition In The Alveolar Ducts Of The Human Lung, Anju Saini, V. K. Katiyar, Pratibha Pratibha Jun 2017

Two-Dimensional Model Of Nanoparticle Deposition In The Alveolar Ducts Of The Human Lung, Anju Saini, V. K. Katiyar, Pratibha Pratibha

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper a mathematical model for nanoparticle deposition in the alveolar ducts of the human lung airways is proposed. There were huge inconsistencies in deposition between ducts of a particular generation and inside every alveolated duct, signifying that limited particle concentrations can be much bigger than the mean acinar concentration. A large number of particles are unsuccessful to way out the structure during expiration. Finite difference method has been used to solve the unsteady nonlinear Navier–Stokes equations in cylindrical coordinate system governing flow assuming axial symmetry under laminar flow condition so that the problem efficiently turns into two-dimensional. An …

New Structure For Exact Solutions Of Nonlinear Time Fractional Sharma-Tasso-Olver Equation Via Conformable Fractional Derivative, Hadi Rezazadeh, Farid S. Khodadad, Jalil Manafian

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper new fractional derivative and direct algebraic method are used to construct exact solutions of the nonlinear time fractional Sharma-Tasso-Olver equation. As a result, three families of exact analytical solutions are obtained. The results reveal that the proposed method is very effective and simple for obtaining approximate solutions of nonlinear fractional partial differential equations.

Stability Of Triangular Libration Points In The Sun - Jupiter System Under Szebehely’S Criterion, M. R. Hassan, Md. A. Hassan, M. Z. Ali Jun 2017

Stability Of Triangular Libration Points In The Sun - Jupiter System Under Szebehely’S Criterion, M. R. Hassan, Md. A. Hassan, M. Z. Ali

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In the present study, the classical fourth-order Runge-Kutta method with seventh-order automatic step-size control has been carried out to examine the stability of triangular libration points in the Sun-Jupiter system. The Sun is a highly luminous body and Jupiter is a highly spinning body, so radiation pressure of the Sun and oblateness of the Jupiter cannot be neglected. These factors must have some effects on the motion of the infinitesimal mass (spacecraft) and consequent effects on the stability of the triangular libration points. It is to be noted that in our problem, infinitesimal mass exerts no influence of attraction on …

Mathematical Modelling Of Stoneley Wave In A Transversely Isotropic Thermoelastic Media, Rajneesh Kumar, Nidhi Sharma, Parveen Lata, S. M. Abo-Dahab Jun 2017

Mathematical Modelling Of Stoneley Wave In A Transversely Isotropic Thermoelastic Media, Rajneesh Kumar, Nidhi Sharma, Parveen Lata, S. M. Abo-Dahab

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper is concerned with the study of propagation of Stoneley waves at the interface of two dissimilar transversely isotropic thermoelastic solids without energy dissipation and with two temperatures. The secular equation of Stoneley waves is derived in the form of the determinant by using appropriate boundary conditions i.e. the stresses components, the displacement components, and temperature at the boundary surface between the two media are considered to be continuous at all times and positions . The dispersion curves giving the Stoneley wave velocity and Attenuation coefficients with wave number are computed numerically. Numerical simulated results are depicted graphically to …

Investigation Of Peltier Devices For Refrigeration, Evan C. Drake Jun 2017

Investigation Of Peltier Devices For Refrigeration, Evan C. Drake

Physics

The purpose of our project was to characterize Peltier devices and determine if they were good candidates toward inexpensive off-grid solar powered refrigeration in poor countries. We measured the rate of cooling with a constant temperature thermal sink for different current inputs. Through numerous experiments we calculated the coefficient of performance for two different thermoelectric coolers (TECs) through a range of temperature differentials. In addition, we found the lowest temperature these Peltier chips could reach so that we could test the accuracy of the information provided by the manufacturers spec sheets. Overall the data gathered through our research is compelling …

Detecting And Evaluating Therapy Induced Changes In Radiomics Features Measured From Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer To Predict Patient Outcomes, Xenia J. Fave May 2017

Detecting And Evaluating Therapy Induced Changes In Radiomics Features Measured From Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer To Predict Patient Outcomes, Xenia J. Fave

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether radiomics features measured from weekly 4-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) images of non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) change during treatment and if those changes are prognostic for patient outcomes or dependent on treatment modality. Radiomics features are quantitative metrics designed to evaluate tumor heterogeneity from routine medical imaging. Features that are prognostic for patient outcome could be used to monitor tumor response and identify high-risk patients for adaptive treatment. This would be especially valuable for NSCLC due to the high prevalence and mortality of this disease.

A novel process was designed to …

Cirrus Cloud Microphysics Over Darwin, Australia, Dorothea Ivanova, Matthew Johnson Apr 2017

Cirrus Cloud Microphysics Over Darwin, Australia, Dorothea Ivanova, Matthew Johnson

Publications

Ice clouds, crucial to the understanding of both short - and long - term climate trends, are poorly represented in global climate models (GCMs). Cirrus clouds, one of the largest uncertainties in the global radiation budget, have been inadequately studied at low latitudes. Parameterizations exist for mid - latitude and tropical cirrus ( Ivanova et al. 2001; McFarquhar et al. 1997). Due to climate sensitivity in the GCM with respect to cloud input, without robust parameterizations of cirrus clouds, the GCM is inaccurate over most output fields, including radiative forcing, temperature, albedo, and heat flux (Yao and Del Genio 1999). …

Stacking 2d Materials, Michael Hernandez, John C. Mann

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Monolayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides are atomically thin semi-conductors that are considered quasi 2D materials due to their extremely small thickness. It has been observed that atomically thin crystals exhibit different physical properties than their bulk counterparts due to quantum confinement effects. We are attempting discover new physical properties by developing a technique to stack two different monolayer crystals, MoS2 and MoSe2.

Effect Of Disorder On The Resistivity Of Cofecral Films, Y. Jin, R. Skomski, P. Kharel, S.R. Valloppilly, D. J. Sellmyer Mar 2017

Effect Of Disorder On The Resistivity Of Cofecral Films, Y. Jin, R. Skomski, P. Kharel, S.R. Valloppilly, D. J. Sellmyer

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Structural and electron-transport properties of thin films of the ferrimagnetic Heusler compound CoFeCrAl have been investigated to elucidate structure-property relationships. The alloy is, ideally, a spin-gapless semiconductor, but structural disorder destroys the spin-gapless character and drastically alters the transport behavior. Two types of CoFeCrAl films were grown by magnetron sputtering deposition at 973 K, namely polycrystalline films on Si substrates and epitaxial films on MgO (001) substrates. The resistivity decreases with increasing temperature, with relatively small temperature coefficients of –0.19 cm=K for the polycrystalline films and –0.12 cm=K for the epitaxial films. The residual resistivity of the polycrystalline films deposited …

The Property Of Mass: An Interdisciplinary Metaphysical Investigation, Benjamin Hayworth Mar 2017

The Property Of Mass: An Interdisciplinary Metaphysical Investigation, Benjamin Hayworth

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

The property of mass as used in the physical sciences is somewhat of a metaphysical conundrum. Not only has the definition of mass changed with various paradigm shifts in physics, but the powers belonging to the property have also varied. In my study, I begin by examining the historical context surrounding the term, including the changes to its definition. In doing so, it is revealed that various definitions of mass are used and circulated in general discussion, so a cogent criterion of identity is established by which each definition can be measured. After determining the distinctions between each mass term, …

On A Class Of Quaternionic Positive Definite Functions And Their Derivatives, Daniel Alpay, Fabrizio Colombo, Irene Sabadini

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we start the study of stochastic processes over the skew field of quaternions. We discuss the relation between positive definite functions and the covariance of centered Gaussian processes and the construction of stochastic processes and their derivatives. The use of perfect spaces and strong algebras and the notion of Fock space are crucial in this framework.
