[Introduction] How much would sea levels rise if everyone jumped in the ocean? (Thanks to Bob Friedhoffer for suggesting the problem.)

To estimate this, we need to know the number of people, the average volume of a person, and the area of the oceans. This is the kind of estimation problem where the inputs are relatively well known, and we are calculating the answer to see its order of magnitude.

There are about 7 X 10⁹ people in the world. If each person has a mass of 100 kg (in round numbers), then they each have a volume …

Magnetism In Curved Geometries, Robert Streubel, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Peter Fischer Jan 2021

Magnetism In Curved Geometries, Robert Streubel, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Peter Fischer

Robert Streubel Papers

Curvature impacts physical properties across multiple length scales, ranging from the macroscopic scale, where the shape and size vary drastically with the curvature, to the nanoscale at interfaces and inhomogeneities in materials with structural, chemical, electronic, and magnetic short-range order. In quantum materials, where correlations, entanglement, and topology dominate, the curvature opens the path to novel characteristics and phenomena that have recently emerged and could have a dramatic impact on future fundamental and applied studies of materials. Particularly, magnetic systems hosting non-collinear and topological states and 3D magnetic nanostructures strongly benefit from treating curvature as a new design parameter to …

Magnetic Properties Of Lsmo/Sto Thin Films: Magnetocaloric, Spin Dynamics And Magnetic Viscosity Investigations, Navid Mottaghi Jan 2021

Magnetic Properties Of Lsmo/Sto Thin Films: Magnetocaloric, Spin Dynamics And Magnetic Viscosity Investigations, Navid Mottaghi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

While other films are discussed, this dissertation will focus on detailed studies of the dc and ac bulk magnetometry in a characteristic 7.6 nm thin film of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 grown on SrTiO3 (001). The dc bulk magnetometry measurements show that the sample is magnetically inhomogeneous. Temperature variation of magnetization (M vs. T) was measured in zero-field-cooled and field-cooled protocols to determine the blocking temperature TB in different applied magnetic fields. The field variation of TB is interpreted as the presence of embedded spin clusters of 1.4 nm. Moreover, the M vs. …

Understanding The Effects Of Water Vapor And Temperature On Aerosol Using Novel Measurement Methods, Tyler Jacob Capek Jan 2021

Understanding The Effects Of Water Vapor And Temperature On Aerosol Using Novel Measurement Methods, Tyler Jacob Capek

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Aerosol and water are inexorably linked, and both are ubiquitous within our atmosphere and required components for cloud formation. Relative humidity (RH), a temperature dependent quantity, can have a significant influence on the size, shape, and ultimately, the optical properties of the aerosol. RH can vary substantially on small spatial and short temporal scales in turbulent conditions due to rapid fluctuations in temperature and water vapor mixing ratio. Accurate assessment of optical enhancements due to an increase in RH is key for determining the particles’ impact on the climate and visibility.

A humidity-controlled cavity attenuated phase-shift albedometer (H-CAPS-PMSSA) …

Convergence Of The Boundary Integral Method For Interfacial Stokes Flow, Keyang Zhang Dec 2020

Convergence Of The Boundary Integral Method For Interfacial Stokes Flow, Keyang Zhang

Dissertations

Boundary integral numerical methods are among the most accurate methods for interfacial Stokes flow, and are widely applied. They have the advantage that only the boundary of the domain must be discretized, which reduces the number of discretization points and allows the treatment of complicated interfaces. Despite their popularity, there is no analysis of the convergence of these methods for interfacial Stokes flow. In practice, the stability of discretizations of the boundary integral formulation can depend sensitively on details of the discretization and on the application of numerical filters. A convergence analysis of the boundary integral method for Stokes flow …

Treated Hfo2 Based Rram Devices With Ru, Tan, Tin As Top Electrode For In-Memory Computing Hardware, Yuvraj Dineshkumar Patel

Theses

The scalability and power efficiency of the conventional CMOS technology is steadily coming to a halt due to increasing problems and challenges in fabrication technology. Many non-volatile memory devices have emerged recently to meet the scaling challenges. Memory devices such as RRAMs or ReRAM (Resistive Random-Access Memory) have proved to be a promising candidate for analog in memory computing applications related to inference and learning in artificial intelligence. A RRAM cell has a MIM (Metal insulator metal) structure that exhibits reversible resistive switching on application of positive or negative voltage. But detailed studies on the power consumption, repeatability and retention …

Electronic Profiling Of Synthetic Dna Using Schottky Junctions, Souhad M.A Daraghma Dec 2020

Electronic Profiling Of Synthetic Dna Using Schottky Junctions, Souhad M.A Daraghma

Student Works (2020-2029)

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) has attracted a lot of attention lately owing to the discovery of its semiconducting property and is considered as an interesting material that could find applications in nanotechnology and electronic devices. In-depth understanding of its charge transfer mechanism is however required for effective development of DNA-based technology. This unfortunately remains still a non-trivial task despite the numerous theoretical and experimental studies that have been conducted to date. The complexity of the previously employed methods, and their lack of accuracy has made it difficult to grasp the clear understanding of the electronic behaviors of the DNA molecules under …

The Importance Of Frontier Orbital Symmetry In The Adsorption Of Diiodobenzene On Mos2(0001), Prescott E. Evans, Zahra Hooshmand, Talat S. Rahman, Peter Dowben Dec 2020

The Importance Of Frontier Orbital Symmetry In The Adsorption Of Diiodobenzene On Mos2(0001), Prescott E. Evans, Zahra Hooshmand, Talat S. Rahman, Peter Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

Evidence of a role of frontier orbital symmetry, in the adsorption process of diiodobenzene on MoS2(0001), appears in the huge differences in the rate of adsorption between 1,3-diiodobenzene, 1,2-diiodobenzene and 1,4-diiodobenzene isomers on MoS2. Experiments indicate that the rate of adsorption of 1,3-diiodobenzene on MoS2(0001) is much greater than that of the 1,2-diodobenzene and 1,4-diiodbenzene isomers. As the differences in calculated diiodobenzene isomer-MoS2 system adsorption energies and electron affinities are negligible, frontier orbital symmetry appears to play a significant role in diiodobenzene adsorption on MoS2(0001). The experimental and theory results, in combination, suggest …

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are widely studied for their ability to confine light, produce sharp resonances for sensing applications and serve as avenues for lasing action with topological characteristics. Primarily, the formation of BICs in periodic photonic band gap structures are driven by symmetry incompatibility; structural manipulation or variation of incidence angle from incoming light. In this work, we report two modalities for driving the formation of BICs in terahertz metasurfaces. At normal incidence, we experimentally confirm polarization driven symmetry-protected BICs by the variation of the linear polarization state of light. In addition, we demonstrate through strong coupling …

Further, we obtain some exact analytical solutions including hyperbolic function.

Accurate Spectral Algorithms For Solving Variable-Order Fractional Percolation Equations, M. A. Abdelkawy Dec 2020

Accurate Spectral Algorithms For Solving Variable-Order Fractional Percolation Equations, M. A. Abdelkawy

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

A high accurate spectral algorithm for one-dimensional variable-order fractional percolation equations (VO-FPEs) is considered. We propose a shifted Legendre Gauss-Lobatto collocation (SL-GLC) method in conjunction with shifted Chebyshev Gauss-Radau collocation (SC-GR-C) method to solve the proposed problem. Firstly, the solution and its space fractional derivatives are expanded as shifted Legendre polynomials series. Then, we determine the expansion coefficients by reducing the VO-FPEs and its conditions to a system of ordinary differential equations (SODEs) in time. The numerical approximation of SODEs is achieved by means of the SC-GR-C method. The under-study’s problem subjected to the Dirichlet or non-local boundary conditions is presented …

Vertical Motion Of The Variable Infinitesimal Mass In The Circular Sitnikov Problem, Abdullah A. Ansari, Sada N. Prasad, Chaman Singh Dec 2020

Vertical Motion Of The Variable Infinitesimal Mass In The Circular Sitnikov Problem, Abdullah A. Ansari, Sada N. Prasad, Chaman Singh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The circular case of Sitnikov problem is studied here when the infinitesimal body varies its mass according to Jeans law and it is moving along the z-axis which is perpendicular to the orbital plane of the two equal spherical primaries. The two primaries are moving in xy-plane on the same circular path. These two primaries are imposing the Newtonian forces on the third variable mass body but not influenced by it. Stability of equilibrium points is examined followed by the derived equations of motion. The time-series solutions of the equation of motion are performed by using the Lindstedt-Poincaré method which …

Heat And Mass Transfer In Micropolar Model For Blood Flow Through A Stenotic Tapered Artery, Moses S. Dada, Funmilola Alamu-Awoniran

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Heat and mass transfer in blood flow through a tapered artery with mild stenosis is examined. The blood is considered to be an incompressible, micropolar fluid flowing through a vessel with nonsymmetric axial and symmetric radial axes. The geometry of the model takes into account the shape parameter, tapered angle and height of the stenosis. The variation in the shape parameter is used to describe the changes in the axial shape of the stenosis in the artery. The governing equations for the model, comprising the continuity, momentum, energy, and mass transfer equations are transformed and simplified under the assumption of mild …

Atmospheric Turbulence Study With Deep Machine Learning Of Intensity Scintillation Patterns, Artem V. Vorontsov, Mikhail A. Vorontsov, Grigorii A. Fillimonov, Ernst Polnau

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

A new paradigm for machine learning-inspired atmospheric turbulence sensing is developed and applied to predict the atmospheric turbulence refractive index structure parameter using deep neural network (DNN)-based processing of short-exposure laser beam intensity scintillation patterns obtained with both: experimental measurement trials conducted over a 7 km propagation path, and imitation of these trials using wave-optics numerical simulations. The developed DNN model was optimized and evaluated in a set of machine learning experiments. The results obtained demonstrate both good accuracy and high temporal resolution in sensing. The machine learning approach was also employed to challenge the validity of several eminent atmospheric …

Helmholtz Spacing Of Thin Rectangular Magnetic Field Coils, Karl J. Ahrendsen, Sarah Reyes, Timothy J. Gay Nov 2020

Helmholtz Spacing Of Thin Rectangular Magnetic Field Coils, Karl J. Ahrendsen, Sarah Reyes, Timothy J. Gay

Timothy J. Gay Publications

In this Note, we discuss the Helmholtz spacing for a pair of thin rectangular coils of arbitrary aspect ratio and consider how best to use such coils to compensate for Earth’s magnetic field along the coils’ Cartesian symmetry axes. Such coils are frequently used in conjunction with charged-particle beam machines. The Helmholtz spacing varies non-monotonically between that for square coils and that for four optimally spaced infinite wires. We consider other coil spacings that extend the length over which the field varies by less than some tolerance along the Cartesian symmetry axes. The calculations also provide a convenient means to …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Strontium ruthenates have a lot of similarities with copper oxide superconductors and are a very interesting object for investigation of mechanisms and conditions which lead to high-temperature superconductivity. We report here on multiple experimental indications of superconductivity with the onset above 40K in strontium ruthenate doped by rhenium and selenium with chlorine used as a flux. The main experimental evidence comes from FTIR spectroscopy of this material followed by the ac and dc magnetization, as well as its heat capacity and magnetoresistance. Structural and morphological studies reveal the heterophase nature of this polycrystalline material as well as changes of lattice …

Laboratory Experiments To Study The Effect Of Temperature On Cigs Solar Cells, Asliddin Komilov Oct 2020

Laboratory Experiments To Study The Effect Of Temperature On Cigs Solar Cells, Asliddin Komilov

Acta of Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent

Abstract - In this work, we studied the effect of temperature on CIGS solar cells as a function of the thickness of the CdS buffer layer. It was found that with an increase in temperature in CIGS-based solar cells (SC), an increase in the acceptor doping concentration occurs in the region where carrier-generation- recombination prevails. It was also established that in solar cells with a thin buffer layer, generationrecombination through interface prevail, and the temperature influences them more.

Indium Segregation To The Selvedge Of In4Se3 (001), Archit Dhingra, Zoe G. Marzouk, Esha Mishra, Pavlo V. Galiy, Taras M. Nenchuk, Peter Dowben Sep 2020

Indium Segregation To The Selvedge Of In4Se3 (001), Archit Dhingra, Zoe G. Marzouk, Esha Mishra, Pavlo V. Galiy, Taras M. Nenchuk, Peter Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

Thermal motion of the surface atoms will lead to a decrease in photoemission intensity, while surface segregation may result in an increase of some phostoemission intensities. For In4Se3(001), both effects are seen. The Debye–Waller factor plot, based on the temperature dependent X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements on In4Se3(001), suggests an upper bound of 203 ± 6 K for the effective Debye temperature, based on the surface component of the In 3d5/2 core-level. Indium is found to segregate to selvedge (subsurface region) of the crystal.

Efficient Time-Stepping Approaches For The Dispersive Shallow Water Equations, Linwan Feng Aug 2020

Efficient Time-Stepping Approaches For The Dispersive Shallow Water Equations, Linwan Feng

Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on developing efficient and stable (high order) time-stepping strategies for the dispersive shallow water equations (DSWE) with variable bathymetry. The DSWE extends the regular shallow water equations to include dispersive effects. Dispersion is physically important and can maintain the shape of a wave that would otherwise form a shock in the shallow water system.

In some cases, the DSWE may be simplified when the bathymetry length scales are small (or large) in relation to other length scales in the shallow water system. These simplified DSWE models, which are related to the full DSWEs, are also considered in …

Flare Emission Observed In High Resolution And Comparison With Numerical Modeling, Nengyi Huang Aug 2020

Flare Emission Observed In High Resolution And Comparison With Numerical Modeling, Nengyi Huang

Dissertations

As one of the most intense activities on the solar surface, flares have been extensively observed and studied ever since the first report. The standard model of solar flares has been established and commonly accepted. However, many limitations from the researching tools have left some of the problems unsolved or controversial. For example, the density of electrons in the corona is lower than it is required to activate the observed emission in HXR, and the mechanism that these electron beams can penetrate down to lower chromosphere is unclear. Many theoretical scenarios were suggested, and more observations had been in need. …

Modeling Anatomic Changes For Adaptive Radiotherapy In Locally Advanced Lung Cancer Patient Population, James Alexander Kavanaugh Aug 2020

Modeling Anatomic Changes For Adaptive Radiotherapy In Locally Advanced Lung Cancer Patient Population, James Alexander Kavanaugh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Anatomic changes occurring mid-treatment for patients undergoing radiation therapy for locally advanced lung cancer can degrade the quality of the intended treatment plan. These changes include tumor regression, geometric misalignment, and lung density changes (atelectasis and pleural effusion), and are visible on the daily 3D cone beam CT (CBCT). To maintain the intended treatment quality, adaptive radiotherapy (ART) can be employed to modify the treatment plan to account for these anatomic changes. However, the evaluation on when to adapt is currently completed manually by the treating clinicians, resulting in a subjective and inconsistent application. To address these limitations, a series …

Artificial Neural Network Discovery Of A Switchable Metasurface Reflector, J. R. Thompson, J. A. Burrow, P. J. Shah, J. Slagle, E. S. Harper, A. Van Rynbach, I. Agha, M. S. Mills

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

Optical materials engineered to dynamically and selectively manipulate electromag- netic waves are essential to the future of modern optical systems. In this paper, we simulate various metasurface configurations consisting of periodic 1D bars or 2D pillars made of the ternary phase change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST). Dynamic switching behavior in reflectance is exploited due to a drastic refractive index change between the crystalline and amorphous states of GST. Selectivity in the reflection and transmission spectra is manipulated by tailoring the geometrical parameters of the metasurface. Due to the immense number of possible metasurface configurations, we train deep neural networks capable of …

An Expanded Model Of Unmatter From Neutrosophic Logic Perspective: Towards Matter-Spirit Unity View, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Robert Neil Boyd Aug 2020

An Expanded Model Of Unmatter From Neutrosophic Logic Perspective: Towards Matter-Spirit Unity View, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Robert Neil Boyd

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In Neutrosophic Logic, a basic assertion is that there are variations of about everything that we can measure; the variations surround three parameters called T, I, F (truth, indeterminacy, falsehood) which can take a range of values. A previous paper in IJNS, 2020 shortly reviews the links among aether and matter creation from the perspective of Neutrosophic Logic. In any case, matter creation process in nature stays a major puzzle for physicists, scientists and other science analysts. To this issue neutrosophic logic offers an answer: "unmatter." This paper examines an extended model of unmatter, to incorporate issue soul solidarity. So, …
