Experimental And Theoretical Study Of An Integrated Silicon Mach-Zehnder Interferometer For Chemical Sensing Applications, Yew Fong Hor May 2002

Experimental And Theoretical Study Of An Integrated Silicon Mach-Zehnder Interferometer For Chemical Sensing Applications, Yew Fong Hor

Dissertations

This thesis involves the design, fabrication and characterization of an integrated optical waveguide sensor. Prior to fabrication, design parameters of the waveguide need to be determined and optimized. The waveguide parameters such as waveguide dimension and the refractive index of the core and cladding are obtained from the single-mode cutoff frequency calculated using either analytical or numerical methods. In this thesis, details of analytical calculations to determine the cutoff frequency in terms of the waveguide parameters will be presented. The method discussed here is Marcatili's approximation. The purpose is to solve the scalar wave equation derived from Maxwell's equations because …

Two-Dimensional Reflectivity Polarization Elastometry Imaging Techniques (Piet) Of Soft Tissue, Hee Chuan Lim May 2002

Two-Dimensional Reflectivity Polarization Elastometry Imaging Techniques (Piet) Of Soft Tissue, Hee Chuan Lim

Dissertations

A non-invasive polarized light reflection measurement method to measure the stretch of soft tissue, such as skin, is described. The technique utilizes changes in the reflectivity of polarized light intensity as a monitor of skin stretch. Measurements on in-vitro pigskin and invivo human skin show that the reflectivity of polarized light intensity increases linearly with stretch over a range. The changes in diffusive reflectivity properties of skin result from the alterations that take place in the roughness across the thickness of the skin layers due to stretch. Conceptually, as the roughness of a layer decreases with stretch, a smoother reflecting …

As we reported earlier [1], thermoelectric detectors can be competitive as nondispersive energy resolving focal-plane instruments in X-ray/UV spectrum. The first generations of prototype devices demonstrated the viability of detector design and provided good agreement between theoretical expectations and experimental data. These devices exploited sensors made of gold with a small fraction of iron impurity. To get the projected high resolution one needs another type of material, namely, lanthanum-cerium hexaborides. We report on the first experimental tests of the feasibility of lanthanum-cerium films as sensor materials. Progress with thin films of these materials argues for the success of these thermoelectric …

Modeling Hydrogen Diffusion For Solar Cell Passivation And Process Optimization, Yi Zhang Jan 2002

Modeling Hydrogen Diffusion For Solar Cell Passivation And Process Optimization, Yi Zhang

Dissertations

A diffusion model for hydrogen (H) in crystalline silicon was established which takes into account the charged state conversion, junction field, mobile traps, and complex formation and dissociation at dopant and trap sites. Carrier exchange among the various charged species is a "fast" process compared to the diffusion process. A numerical method was developed to solve the densities of various charged species from the Poisson's equation that involves shallow-level dopants and one "negative U" impurity, e.g., H. Time domain implicit method was adopted in finite difference scheme to solve the fully coupled equations.

Limiting versions of the model were applied …

Cooling Atoms In An Optical Trap By Selective Parametric Excitation, Nicola Poli, Robert J. Brecha, Giacomo Roati, Giovanni Modugno Jan 2002

Cooling Atoms In An Optical Trap By Selective Parametric Excitation, Nicola Poli, Robert J. Brecha, Giacomo Roati, Giovanni Modugno

Physics Faculty Publications

We demonstrate the possibility of energy-selective removal of cold atoms from a tight optical trap by means of parametric excitation of the trap vibrational modes. Taking advantage of the anharmonicity of the trap potential, we either selectively remove the most energetic trapped atoms or excite those at the bottom of the trap by tuning the parametric modulation frequency. This process, which had been previously identified as a possible source of heating, also appears to be a robust way for forcing evaporative cooling in anharmonic traps.

Techniques For The Regeneration Of Wideband Speech From Narrowband Speech, Jason A. Fuemmeler, Russell C. Hardie, William R. Gardner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the problem of reconstructing wideband speech signals from observed narrowband speech signals. The goal of this work is to improve the perceived quality of speech signals which have been transmitted through narrowband channels or degraded during acquisition. We describe a system, based on linear predictive coding, for estimating wideband speech from narrowband. This system employs both previously identified and novel techniques. Experimental results are provided in order to illustrate the system’s ability to improve speech quality. Both objective and subjective criteria are used to evaluate the quality of the processed speech signals.

Structural, Transport And Magnetic Studies Of Perovskite Bi1-X Cax Mn O3, Hyungje Woo Aug 2001

Structural, Transport And Magnetic Studies Of Perovskite Bi1-X Cax Mn O3, Hyungje Woo

Dissertations

This dissertation presents an investigation of the fundamental physics of the perovskite system Bi1-xCaxMn03. This material belongs to a group of simple perovskites called the manganites which are of technological importance for magnetic device applications as read-head sensors.

The Bi1-xCaxMnO3 system is known to exhibit charge ordering (and high sensitivity to magnetic fields) for a much broader range of x than the well-characterized La1-xCaxMnO3 system. However, the properties of Bi1-xCaxMnO3 over the entire doping range are not well understood. …

Detection Of Vapor Phase Mercury Species By Laser Fluorescence Methods, Xiaomei Tong Aug 2001

Detection Of Vapor Phase Mercury Species By Laser Fluorescence Methods, Xiaomei Tong

Dissertations

Elemental and compound mercury are often both volatile and air stable. Several mercury species emissions have been identified in off-gases from industrial processes. The high toxicity of mercury species and the presence of mercury species in municipal waste and coal have prompted a demand for a cost-effective, accurate, and rugged technique for real-time, continuous detection of mercury species vapors. Real-time, continuous emission measurements are important for process control, monitoring, and remediation. At present, there is no commercial continuous emission monitoring (CEM) technique or instrumentation to reliably monitor volatile mercury species emissions from industrial stacks. Conventional measurement methods, such as cold …

Electrostatic Micro Actuators For Mirror And Other Applications, Xingtao Wu Aug 2001

Electrostatic Micro Actuators For Mirror And Other Applications, Xingtao Wu

Dissertations

Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) based electrostatic micro actuators are becoming important building blocks for innovations in optical signal processing and computing systems due to their inherently small size, high density, high speed and low power consumption. Generally, the principle of operation in these systems can be described as: an electrostatic attractive force causes a mechanical rotation, translation or deformation of a mirror plate, controlling the power, phase or direction of a light beam while it propagates through some medium or through free space. The fast paced, competitive research and development efforts widely being undertaken, both in academia and industry, are demanding …

Vortex-Defect Interactions In High-Temperature Superconductors, Valentina Tobos Aug 2001

Vortex-Defect Interactions In High-Temperature Superconductors, Valentina Tobos

Dissertations

The topics covered in this thesis are related to two objectives: one refers to the search for methods of improving die critical current density of high-temperature superconductors, a subject which remains of continuing interest for its importance in technological applications. The other direction is aimed at clarifying the phase diagram of high-Tc materials.

The interaction between the structural defects and the vortex system plays a significant role in the capability of these materials to carry large electrical transport currents. Through proton irradiation induced defects we follow the evolution of the critical current density, and its enhancement with increasing point-like defects …

Ultrathin Silicon Wafer Bonding Physics And Applications, Michael H. Beggans May 2001

Ultrathin Silicon Wafer Bonding Physics And Applications, Michael H. Beggans

Dissertations

Ultrathin silicon wafer bonding is an emerging process that simplifies device fabrication, reduces manufacturing costs, increases yield, and allows the realization of novel devices. Ultrathin silicon wafers are between 3 and 200 microns thick with all the same properties of the thicker silicon wafers (greater than 300 microns) normally used by the semiconductor electronics industry. Wafer bonding is one technique by which multiple layers are formed.

In this thesis, the history and practice of wafer bonding is described and applied to the manufacture of microelectomechanical systems (MEMS) devices with layer thickness on the scale of microns. Handling and processing problems …

Broadband Whole Package Fdtd Simulation, Shenjun Li May 2001

Broadband Whole Package Fdtd Simulation, Shenjun Li

Dissertations

Whole package analysis is becoming more and more important with the rapid expansion of high frequency electronics. The motivation of this thesis is to find and implement a new method for broadband whole package simulation. 3-dimension (3-D) whole package Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulation result was first reported in detail in this thesis.

The FDTD method is a widely used full-wave time-domain simulation method used in the design and analysis for electromagnetic (EM) systems, such as antennas, wave propagating, and microwave circuits. Absorbing boundary condition (ABC), such as the perfect matched layer (PML) method, makes it possible to accurately …

Near-Field Imaging With Terahertz Pulses, Oleg Mitrofanov May 2001

Near-Field Imaging With Terahertz Pulses, Oleg Mitrofanov

Dissertations

High spatial resolution imaging is implemented with a novel collection mode near-field terahertz (THz) probe. Exceptional sensitivity of the probe allows imaging with spatial resolution of few microns using THz pulses with spectral content of 120 to 1500 microns. In the present study, the principle of the probe operation as well as the probe design and characteristics are described.

The probe performance is related to effective detection of radiation coupled into the probe aperture. Propagation of short single-cycle electromagnetic pulses through apertures as small as 1/300 of the wavelength is experimentally and numerically studied. Finite-difference time-domain method is used to …

Gated Multi-Cycle Integration (Gmci) For Focal Plane Array (Fpa) Applications, Haijiang Ou May 2001

Gated Multi-Cycle Integration (Gmci) For Focal Plane Array (Fpa) Applications, Haijiang Ou

Dissertations

In this thesis, the model and the theory of gated multi-cycle integration (GMCI) were first developed specifically for focal plane array dealing with repetitive or modulated image. The operational modes of GMCI include gated integration (GI), phase sensitive integration (PSI), multi-point summation, multi-point subtraction, multi-sample averaging and some of their combinations. Thus, the analytic theory of GMCI somehow unifies the theories of gated integration, phase sensitive detection, multiple summation and average. PSI works with background and/or dark current subtraction. As a result, the storage well of a pixel is mainly used for signal integration even if there exists a strong …

A Near-Infrared Filter System And Study Of Solar Umbral Dots At 1.6 Μm, Jingshan Wang May 2001

A Near-Infrared Filter System And Study Of Solar Umbral Dots At 1.6 Μm, Jingshan Wang

Dissertations

The observations of solar magnetic fields are very important because they influence events on the sun. Almost all of magnetographs in the world work in the visible wavelength and they are powerful instruments for measuring strong magnetic fields (above 1000 Gauss) on the sun. To measure the weak solar magnetic fields (below 1000 Gauss), a new filter system (magnetograph) working in near-IR wavelength has been developed in this work. This system includes an interference prefilter (FWHM - 40Å), a liquid crystal magnetic analyzer, a near-IR bireffingent filter (FWHM - 2.5Å), a near-IR Fabry-Perot filter (FWHM - 0.12Å), a near-IR InGaAs …

One is used to provide a high frame rate magnetogram system, and the other provides a real-time image alignment, i.e., a correlation tracker system.

The developed correlation tracker system consists of a high-speed 64x64 CCD camera, an EDT image grabbing board, an agile mirror, a D/A board and a Sun …

Molecular Simulations Of Sound Wave Propagation In Simple Gases, Alejandro Garcia, N. Hadjiconstantinou Jan 2001

Molecular Simulations Of Sound Wave Propagation In Simple Gases, Alejandro Garcia, N. Hadjiconstantinou

Faculty Publications

Molecular simulations of sound waves propagating in a dilute hard sphere gas have been performed using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. A wide range of frequencies is investigated, including very high frequencies for which the period is much shorter than the mean collision time. The simulation results are compared to experimental data and approximate solutions of the Boltzmann equation. It is shown that free molecular flow is important at distances smaller than one mean free path from the excitation point.

A feasibility study of megapixel microcalorimeter arrays, based on thermoelectric energy to voltage conversion and digital superconducting readout, is presented. The design concept originated from the philosophy of employing the simplest principles at the single-pixel level to enable large arrays without sacrificing energy resolution, fast operation speed, and quantum efficiency. Initial experimental tests confirm the basic predictions of theory, and show no major obstacle in achieving the desired characteristics.

Two-Level Atom In An Optical Parametric Oscillator: Spectra Of Transmitted And Fluorescent Fields In The Weak Driving Field Limit, James P. Clemens, Perry R. Rice, Pranaw Kumar Rungta, Robert J. Brecha Aug 2000

Two-Level Atom In An Optical Parametric Oscillator: Spectra Of Transmitted And Fluorescent Fields In The Weak Driving Field Limit, James P. Clemens, Perry R. Rice, Pranaw Kumar Rungta, Robert J. Brecha

Physics Faculty Publications

We consider the interaction of a two-level atom inside an optical parametric oscillator. In the weak-driving-field limit, we essentially have an atom-cavity system driven by the occasional pair of correlated photons, or weakly squeezed light. We find that we may have holes, or dips, in the spectrum of the fluorescent and transmitted light. This occurs even in the strong-coupling limit when we find holes in the vacuum-Rabi doublet. Also, spectra with a subnatural linewidth may occur. These effects disappear for larger driving fields, unlike the spectral narrowing obtained in resonance fluorescence in a squeezed vacuum; here it is important that …

Time Domain Measurement Of The Nonlinear Refractive Index In Optical Fibers And Semiconductor Film, Hernando Garcia May 2000

Time Domain Measurement Of The Nonlinear Refractive Index In Optical Fibers And Semiconductor Film, Hernando Garcia

Dissertations

A new technique to measure the nonlinear refractive index n2 in optical fibers and semiconductor films has been developed. It is based on the time delay two-beam coupling of very intense picosecond laser pulses that have been self-phase modulated in the nonlinear optical medium. The two beams are coupled in a slow responding medium that is sensitive to time dependent phase distortions. We determine that the amount of phase distortion experienced by the pulse is proportional to the nonlinear refractive index of the medium, This time domain approach can also be applied to optical fiber amplifiers in the presence …

Modeling, Design And Fabrication Of Thin-Film Microcrystalline Silicon Solar Cells, Wei Chen May 2000

Modeling, Design And Fabrication Of Thin-Film Microcrystalline Silicon Solar Cells, Wei Chen

Dissertations

The modeling, design and fabrication of low-cost thin-film microcrystalline silicon(µcSi) solar cells is studied in this thesis. The cell, considered in this investigation, utilizes low-cost glass as the substrate and microcrystalline Si (µc-Si) as the active layer. A comprehensive refractive index (n) and extinction coefficient (k) model of silicon as function of doping, temperature and wavelength is developed to assist the optical design of the cell. In order to obtain acceptable short circuit current density (Jsc) from the cell, it is found that the thickness of the silicon thin film should be more than 10µm. To get the best light …

Testing Of The New Usgs K Index Algorithm At Bear Lake Observatory, Ariel O. Acebal Mar 2000

Testing Of The New Usgs K Index Algorithm At Bear Lake Observatory, Ariel O. Acebal

Theses and Dissertations

The K index was developed by Bartels in 1939 as an estimate of the level of geomagnetic activity caused by the Sun. This index was computed manually every three hours at geomagnetic observatories using the magnetic traces of the surface planetary magnetic field. In 1991, the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy approved four additional methods to compute the K index; all of them were computer algorithms. One of the approved methods, the Wilson code, recently underwent some modifications. The new algorithm is now part of a Windows-based computer program being developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). After …

Experimental And Phenomenological Study Of Persistent Photoconductivity In Yba2cu3o6 Thin Films, Daniel-Dennis Mcalevy Bubb Jan 2000

Experimental And Phenomenological Study Of Persistent Photoconductivity In Yba2cu3o6 Thin Films, Daniel-Dennis Mcalevy Bubb

Dissertations

Persistent Photoconductivity in YBa2Cu3O6+x thin films is studied by means of infrared photoconductivity measurements after the films have been illuminated with visible light at low temperature. Experimentally, the effect is characterized by the samples' electrical response to infrared light, either causing the resistance to decrease or increase.

A cellular automata model is proposed in explanation of these results and is shown to be consistent with current experimental understanding of this unusual effect, both our results and those of others. The cellular automata model may have application to other unusual optical phenomena exhibited by YBa2 …
