Construction Of Fasr Subsystem Testbed And Application For Solar Burst Trajectories And Rfi Study, Zhiwei Liu May 2007

Construction Of Fasr Subsystem Testbed And Application For Solar Burst Trajectories And Rfi Study, Zhiwei Liu

Dissertations

The construction of the Frequency Agile Solar Radiotelescope (FASR) Subsystem Testbed (FST) and observational results are described. Three antennas of Owens Valley Solar Array (OVSA) have been upgraded with newly designed, state of art technology. The 1-9 GHz RF signal from the antenna feed is transmitted via broadband (45 MHz-9.5 GHz) optical fiber links to the control room. The RF is then downconverted to a 500 MHz, single-sideband signal that can be tuned across the 1-9 GHz RF band. The data are sampled with an 8-bit, 1 GHz sampling-rate digitizer, and further saved to a computer hard disk. The full-resolution …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Measurements of the global conformation of macromolecules can be carried out using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Glass focusing capillaries, manufactured at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS), have been successfully employed for SAXS measurements on the heme protein cytochrome c. These capillaries provide high X-ray flux into a spot size of tens of micrometres, permitting short exposures of small-volume samples. Such a capability is ideal for use in conjunction with microfluidic mixers, where time resolution may be determined by beam size and sample volumes are kept small to facilitate mixing and conserve material.

High Resolution Studies Of Complex Solar Active Regions, Na Deng Jan 2007

High Resolution Studies Of Complex Solar Active Regions, Na Deng

Dissertations

Flares and Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are energetic events, which can even impact the near-Earth environment and are the principal source of space weather. Most of them originate in solar active regions. The most violent events are produced in sunspots with a complex magnetic field topology. Studying their morphology and dynamics is helpful in understanding the energy accumulation and release mechanisms for flares and CMEs, which are intriguing problems in solar physics.

The study of complex active regions is based on high-resolution observations from space missions and new instruments at the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO). Adaptive optics (AG) in …

Solar flares are generally identified as an important source of disturbances that affect space weather, while many aspects of the basic flare process are still not well understood. The purpose of the present work has been to investigate the small and large-scale magnetic structures and their evolution associated with flares in the context of magnetic reconnection, based on which the goal of this dissertation is to further the understanding of the various properties of flares and related phenomena, including their origin, precursors, and evolution of morphology in solar atmosphere.

The research presented in this dissertation relied upon multiwavelength observations of …

Algorithm Refinement For Fluctuating Hydrodynamics, Alejandro Garcia, S. Williams, J. B. Bell Jan 2007

Algorithm Refinement For Fluctuating Hydrodynamics, Alejandro Garcia, S. Williams, J. B. Bell

Faculty Publications

This paper introduces an adaptive mesh and algorithm refinement method for fluctuating hydrodynamics. This particle-continuum hybrid simulates the dynamics of a compressible fluid with thermal fluctuations. The particle algorithm is direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC), a molecular-level scheme based on the Boltzmann equation. The continuum algorithm is based on the Landau–Lifshitz Navier–Stokes (LLNS) equations, which incorporate thermal fluctuations into macroscopic hydrodynamics by using stochastic fluxes. It uses a recently developed solver for the LLNS equations based on third-order Runge–Kutta. We present numerical tests of systems in and out of equilibrium, including time-dependent systems, and demonstrate dynamic adaptive refinement by the …

Numerical Methods For The Stochastic Landau-Lifshitz Navier-Stokes Equations, Alejandro Garcia, J. B. Bell, S. Williams Jan 2007

Numerical Methods For The Stochastic Landau-Lifshitz Navier-Stokes Equations, Alejandro Garcia, J. B. Bell, S. Williams

Faculty Publications

The Landau-Lifshitz Navier-Stokes (LLNS) equations incorporate thermal fluctuations into macroscopic hydrodynamics by using stochastic fluxes. This paper examines explicit Eulerian discretizations of the full LLNS equations. Several computational fluid dynamics approaches are considered (including MacCormack’s two-step Lax-Wendroff scheme and the piecewise parabolic method) and are found to give good results for the variance of momentum fluctuations. However, neither of these schemes accurately reproduces the fluctuations in energy or density. We introduce a conservative centered scheme with a third-order Runge-Kutta temporal integrator that does accurately produce fluctuations in density, energy, and momentum. A variety of numerical tests, including the random walk …

Revisiting Hafemeister’S ‘Science And Society’ Tests, Robert J. Brecha, Rex L. Berney, Bruce A. Craver

Physics Faculty Publications

We revisit a series of papers on science and society issues by David Hafemeister in the 1970s and 1980s. The emphasis in the present work is on world oil production limits and some consequences of various possible scenarios for the near future. Some of the data and scenarios used by Hafemeister are updated for U.S. oil production in the past two decades and extended to an analysis of a peak in world oil production in the future. We discuss some simple scenarios for future energy use patterns and look at the consequence of these scenarios as world oil production begins …

Electron Shock Waves: Ionization Rate And Solutions To The Efd Equations, Mostafa Hemmati, Steven Summers, Michael Weller Jan 2007

Electron Shock Waves: Ionization Rate And Solutions To The Efd Equations, Mostafa Hemmati, Steven Summers, Michael Weller

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

This paper describes our numerical investigation into ionizing breakdown waves, primarily antiforce waves. Antiforce waves are waves for which the electric field force on the electronsisin the opposite direction of the wave's propagation. This investigation required us to utilize one-dimensional electron fluid-dynamical equations, which were applied to a pulse wave that transmits into a region of neutral gas and is under the influence of an applied electric field. Two important assumptions were made in applying these equations: electrons were considered to be the main component in the propagation of the pulse wave, and the partial pressure of the electron gas …

Quantum Physics And Welfare Policy?, Jack C. Straton Jan 2007

Quantum Physics And Welfare Policy?, Jack C. Straton

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Welfare policy is examined through the paradoxical logic of Nagarjuna’s tetralema, providing a lens through which wave-particle duality in quantum mechanics is then viewed. Through this process students are challenged to radically expand their critical-thinking horizons beyond conventional dualistic bounds. They learn not only this key property of quantum reality, but have to come to grips with the nature of knowledge itself, and the degree to which they censor their own awarenesses.

Feasibility Of Superconductivity In Semiconductor Superlatices, Kenneth P. Walsh Aug 2006

Feasibility Of Superconductivity In Semiconductor Superlatices, Kenneth P. Walsh

Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to explore superconductivity in semiconductor superlattices of alternating hole and electron layers. The feasibility of superconductivity in semiconductor superlattices is based on a model formulated by Harshrnan and Mills. In this model, a semiconductor superlattice forms the layered electron and hole reservoirs of high transition temperature (high-Tc) superconductors.

A GaAs-A1xGa1-xAs semiconductor structure is proposed which is predicted to superconduct at Tc = 2.0 K and may be analogous to the layered electronic structure of high-Tc superconductors. Formation of an alternating sequence of electron- and hole-populated quantum wells (an electron-hole superlattice) in a modulation-doped GaAs- …

Earthshine : Photometry, Modeling, And Spectral Observations, Jeffrey Patrick Hickey Aug 2006

Earthshine : Photometry, Modeling, And Spectral Observations, Jeffrey Patrick Hickey

Theses

The Earthshine group has been making sustained observations of the Earthshine from Big Bear Solar Observatory in California since late 1998. There have also been intermittent observations from 1994-5. High and low resolution Earthshine spectral observations have also been under taken at Palomar Observatory since 1999. The group has re-invigorated and modernized a nearly forgotten way of measuring the Earth's albedo, and hence its energy balance, previously studied by Danjon (and his followers) for about twenty-five years early in the last century, using their observations of the Earthshine from France. This is an overview paper covering observations, reductions, simulations, and …

Study Of Propagation And Detection Methods Of Terahertz Radiation For Spectroscopy And Imaging, Aparajita Bandyopadhyay May 2006

Study Of Propagation And Detection Methods Of Terahertz Radiation For Spectroscopy And Imaging, Aparajita Bandyopadhyay

Dissertations

The applications of terahertz (THz, 1 THz is 1012 cycles per second or 300 pm in wavelength) radiation are rapidly expanding. In particular, THz imaging is emerging as a powerful technique to spatially map a wide variety of objects with spectral features which are present for many materials in THz region. Objects buried within dielectric structures can also be imaged due to the transparency of most dielectrics in this regime. Unfortunately, the image quality in such applications is inherently influenced by the scattering introduced by the sample inhomogeneities and by the presence of barriers that reduces both the transmitted power …

Novel Characterization Of Materials Using Thz Spectroscopic Techniques, Amartya Sengupta May 2006

Novel Characterization Of Materials Using Thz Spectroscopic Techniques, Amartya Sengupta

Dissertations

Significant scientific and technical challenges within the terahertz (THz) frequency regime have recently motivated an array of new research activities. This involves numerous applications of this region of the electromagnetic spectrum between approximately 100 GHz (3mm) and 3 THz (100 µm) for both spectroscopy and imaging purposes. THz time domain spectroscopy is unique in that the time domain waveforms are measured and the complex optical constants are deduced directly without resorting to the Kramers-Kronig Analysis.

In this work, THz spectroscopy has been used to characterize different types of materials. Materials investigated consisted of semiconductors, gate dielectric materials, high energetic materials …

Intracellular Signaling: How Do Cells Respond To Single And Multiple Inputs, Latoya Crayton May 2006

Intracellular Signaling: How Do Cells Respond To Single And Multiple Inputs, Latoya Crayton

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

One important biological question is how the cell processes input information and decides what to respond. The cell can integrate the multiple inputs using linear and nonlinear dynamics to generate an appropriate output. This study focuses on the computerized recording of phototaxis (movement in relation to light direction) of Chlamydomonas cell populations response to green light, which activates the rhodopsin photoreceptor at their eyespots. The inputs are light stimulation of various wavelengths and intensities; and chemicals (IBMX, a PDE inhibitor; 2'5'-dideoxyadenosine, an adenylate cyclase inhibitor, 8-Br-cAMP-Na and Dibutyryl cAMP, cAMP analogs) affecting an important intracellular messenger, cAMP. The quantified output …

Development Of A High Spatial Selectivity Tri-Polar Concentric Ring Electrode For Laplacian Electroencephalography (Leeg) System, Kanthaiah Koka Apr 2006

Development Of A High Spatial Selectivity Tri-Polar Concentric Ring Electrode For Laplacian Electroencephalography (Leeg) System, Kanthaiah Koka

Doctoral Dissertations

Brain activity generates electrical potentials that are spatio-temporal in nature. Electroencephalography (EEG) is the least costly and most widely used non-invasive technique for diagnosing many brain problems. It has high temporal resolution but lacks high spatial resolution.

The surface Laplacian will enhance the spatial resolution of EEG as it performs the second spatial derivative of the surface potentials. In an attempt to increase the spatial selectivity, researchers introduced a bipolar electrode configuration using a five point finite difference method (FPM) and others applied a quasi-bipolar (tri-polar with two elements shorted) concentric electrode configuration. To further increase the spatial resolution, the …

Estimating Hydrodynamic Quantities In The Presence Of Microscopic Fluctuations, Alejandro Garcia Jan 2006

Estimating Hydrodynamic Quantities In The Presence Of Microscopic Fluctuations, Alejandro Garcia

Faculty Publications

This paper discusses the evaluation of hydrodynamic variables in the presence of spontaneous fluctuations, such as in molecular simulations of fluid flows. The principal point is that hydrodynamic variables such as fluid velocity and temperature must be defined in terms of mechanical variables such as momentum and energy density). Because these relations are nonlinear and because fluctuations of mechanical variables are correlated, care must be taken to avoid introducing a bias when evaluating means, variances, and correlations of hydrodynamic variables. The unbiased estimates are formulated; some alternative, incorrect approaches are presented as cautionary warnings. The expressions are verified by numerical …

Vector Theory Of Spontaneous Lorentz Violation, Shu Hong Fung Jan 2006

Vector Theory Of Spontaneous Lorentz Violation, Shu Hong Fung

Honors Theses

Classical electromagnetism predicts two massless propagating modes, which are known as the two polarizations of the photon. On the other hand, if the Lorentz symmetry of classical electromagnetism is spontaneously broken, the new theory will still have two massless Nambu-Goldstone modes resembling the photon. If the Lorentz symmetry is broken by a bumblebee potential that allows for excitations out of the minimum, then massive modes arise. Furthermore, in curved spacetime, such massive modes will be created through a process other than the usual Higgs mechanism because of the dependence of the bumblebee potential on both the vector field and the …

Study Of Causal Component Placement In An Active Sound Cancellation System, Eileen Anderson, Andrew B. Wright Jan 2006

Study Of Causal Component Placement In An Active Sound Cancellation System, Eileen Anderson, Andrew B. Wright

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In a feedforward Active Sound Cancellation (ASC) system, the acoustic delay between a primary source and an error microphone must be greater than the delay between the measurement of that source by the reference microphone and the arrival of the secondary source's wave at the error microphone. Such a configuration is called a causal configuration. For periodic disturbances, cancellation can still be achieved in non-causal configuration. Since the waveform is periodic, each cycle of the waveform is identical, and the cycle being canceled is not the measured part of the waveform, but a subsequent cycle in the waveform. Non-periodic sources …

Hydrodynamic Description Of The Adiabatic Piston, Alejandro Garcia, M. M. Mansour Jan 2006

Hydrodynamic Description Of The Adiabatic Piston, Alejandro Garcia, M. M. Mansour

Faculty Publications

A closed macroscopic equation for the motion of the two-dimensional adiabatic piston is derived from standard hydrodynamics. It predicts a damped oscillatory motion of the piston towards a final rest position, which depends on the initial state. In the limit of large piston mass, the solution of this equation is in quantitative agreement with the results obtained from both hard disk molecular dynamics and hydrodynamics. The explicit forms of the basic characteristics of the piston’s dynamics, such as the period of oscillations and the relaxation time, are derived. The limitations of the theory’s validity, in terms of the main system …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

A thermoelectric generator, operating in a cryostat at liquid helium temperatures, is described. Energy to the generator is supplied via an external laser beam. For this prototype device the associated heat load at permanent operation is comparable with the heat load associated with power delivery via metallic wires. Estimates indicate that still better performance can be enabled with existing thermoelectric materials, thereby far exceeding efficiency of traditional cryostat wiring. We used a prototype generator to produce electric power for measuring critical currents in Nb3Sn-films at 4K.

Studies Of Solar White-Light Flares And Small-Scale Magnetic Structures Observed In The Near Infrared, Yan Xu Aug 2005

Studies Of Solar White-Light Flares And Small-Scale Magnetic Structures Observed In The Near Infrared, Yan Xu

Dissertations

Using the most advanced infrared imaging technology as developed by NJIT, detailed study of solar white-light flares and small magnetic structures, such as faculae and pores, are presented in this dissertation. The investigations focus on near-infrared observations at 1.56 μm, which are good proxy of the deepest layer of the solar photosphere.

I made fundamental contributions in two areas of near infrared (NIR) solar physics: (1) the first detection and understanding of white-light flares in the NIR and (2) clearly demonstrated non-existence of "dark faculae". Several high-resolution observations have been carried out at BBSO and National Solar Observatory/Sacramento Peak. The …

Emissivity Of Patterned Silicon Wafers In Rapid Thermal Processing, Markus Rabus Aug 2005

Emissivity Of Patterned Silicon Wafers In Rapid Thermal Processing, Markus Rabus

Theses

The influence of patterns on emissivity in silicon wafers in rapid thermal processing systems has been investigated. In this study, two experiments with layered and patterned silicon wafers were conducted. The main difference in the experiments is the way in which the temperature was controlled. The first experiment was performed under Open Loop Intensity Control (OLIC). For OLIC, no feedback from the wafer is returned. It is assumed that supplying a certain power level will lead to the desired temperature. The other experiment used the Closed Loop Intensity Control. In this case, a feedback, in the form of temperature deviation …

An Analysis Of Changes In The Magnetic Field Of Active Region 9415 After The 2001 April 6 Solar Flare, Juli Marya Stoltz Aug 2005

An Analysis Of Changes In The Magnetic Field Of Active Region 9415 After The 2001 April 6 Solar Flare, Juli Marya Stoltz

Theses

The objective of this study was to further the current understanding of the correlation between solar flares and magnetic flux change. The average gradient of the magnetic flux around the neutral line of Active Region 9415 and the locations of the magnetic flux centers-of-mass in both polarities in AR 9415 were determined. Subsequent to the 2001 April 6 flare, there was a statistically significant mean increase of 0.00208 G/km in the average gradient. Prior to the flare, the magnetic flux centers-of-mass became increasingly sheared along the neutral line. After the flare, this shear suddenly decreased and the magnetic flux centers-of-mass …

Dynamics Of Filaments, Flares And Coronal Mass Ejections (Cmes), Ju Jing

Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the connection between the dynamics of solar surface phenomena such as filament eruptions, flares, the coronal mass ejections (CMEs), the core of so-called solar activity, and the properties of the associated magnetic field for the development of forecasts of solar activity and space weather. Both statistical and case studies have been carried out.

The topics covered in this dissertation are: the statistical relationship among phenomena of solar activity, in particular, filament eruptions, flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs); the correlation between magnetic reconnection rate and flux rope acceleration of two-ribbon flares; the …

Reconstruction Of An Unknown Boundary Portion From Cauchy Data In N- Dimensions, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill Feb 2005

Reconstruction Of An Unknown Boundary Portion From Cauchy Data In N- Dimensions, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider the inverse problem of determining the shape of some inaccessible portion of the boundary of a region in n dimensions from Cauchy data for the heat equation on an accessible portion of the boundary. The inverse problem is quite ill-posed, and nonlinear. We develop a Newton-like algorithm for solving the problem, with a simple and efficient means for computing the required derivatives, develop methods for regularizing the process, and provide computational examples.

Hybrid Explicit-Implicit Fdtd-Fem Time-Domain Solver For Electromagnetic Problems, Kakhkhor Abdijalilov Jan 2005

Hybrid Explicit-Implicit Fdtd-Fem Time-Domain Solver For Electromagnetic Problems, Kakhkhor Abdijalilov

Dissertations

The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method and Finite-Element (FEM) method are numerical techniques used for solving Maxwell's electromagnetic equations. FDTD-FEM hybrid methods opt for combining the advantages of both FDTD and FEM. In this dissertation, signal processing techniques were used to analyze the FDTD stability condition. A procedure, which reduces time-sampling error yet preserves the stability of algorithm is proposed. Both explicit and implicit time-stepping schemes were treated in the framework of the developed method. An improved version of the implicit-explicit FEM-FDTD hybrid method was developed. The new method minimizes reflection from the interface between different types of grids. A class …

Characteristics Of Nanocomposites And Semiconductor Heterostructure Wafers Using Thz Spectroscopy, Hakan Altan Jan 2005

Characteristics Of Nanocomposites And Semiconductor Heterostructure Wafers Using Thz Spectroscopy, Hakan Altan

Dissertations

All optical, THz-Time Domain Spectroscopic (THz-TDS) methods were employed towards determining the electrical characteristics of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes, Ion Implanted Si nanoclusters and Si1-xGex HFO2, SiO2 on p-type Si wafers.

For the nanoscale composite materials, Visible Pump/THz Probe spectroscopy measurements were performed after observing that the samples were not sensitive to the THz radiation alone. The results suggest that the photoexcited nanotubes exhibit localized transport due to Lorentz-type photo-induced localized states from 0.2 to 0.7THz. The THz transmission is modeled through the photoexcited layer with an effective dielectric constant described by a Drude …
