Travelling-Wave Sub-Doppler Excited Molecule Energy Transfer Spectroscopy, Khalid Iqbal, Shannon G. Lieb, J. W. Bevan Jan 1982

Travelling-Wave Sub-Doppler Excited Molecule Energy Transfer Spectroscopy, Khalid Iqbal, Shannon G. Lieb, J. W. Bevan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

A general formulation of traveling‐wave sub‐Doppler excited molecule energy transferspectroscopy is presented. The line profile analysis is applied to that determined experimentally for the R(22) ν3 HCN transition. Pn the noise equivalent power of the detector is demonstrated to be ⩽10−12 W. Finally, the technique is applied to resolve the KsR(7) ν1 transition head in NH3.

Effect Of Virtual 4d-Shell Excitations On Rare Earth Spectra, Anthony F. Starace Jan 1974

Effect Of Virtual 4d-Shell Excitations On Rare Earth Spectra, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Ab initio energies for electric dipole transitions 4d10 (1S0) → 4d94f J = 1 in triply-ionized lanthanum have been calculated by constructing an effective interaction, acting within the configuration 4d94f, that incorporates effects of virtual 4d-shell excitations to all orders of perturbation. Virtual 4d-shell excitations, included within the random phase approximation, and virtual excitations to singly-excited configurations 4d9εf are found to reduce the ordinary electrostatic interaction by 38% for the 1P1 term of 4d94f, by 6% for the 3D1 term, and by 3% …

Investigation Of The Alpha-Sub-Gamma Phase In Alnico 6, Cortez Samuel Sep 1970

Investigation Of The Alpha-Sub-Gamma Phase In Alnico 6, Cortez Samuel

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this research project was to study the αᵧ phase in Alnico 6. Other phases were studies for comparison. Also the effect of an applied magnetic field on the formation of the αᵧ phase was investigated.

Three single crystals of Alnico 6 were heat treated for one hour--one at 1250°C, one at 1000°C, and one at 800°C--and water-quenched. The microstructure of each sample was observed with the optical microscope, and X-ray diffraction patterns were taken to determine the crystal structure of the phases present.

Several single crystal samples of Alnico 6 were heat treated at 1000°C and furnace-cooled. …

Mechanical Effects Of Acoustic Transients On Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Philip Edward Hamrick Jan 1968

Mechanical Effects Of Acoustic Transients On Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Philip Edward Hamrick

Theses and Dissertations

The mechanical breakage of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) due to the action of acoustic transients has been investigated. The acoustic transients were produced by transient heating of a Prussian blue dye solution (attenuation coefficient of 1000 per cm) when a ruby laser light (20 x 106 watts) was incident on the dye surface. A quartz piezoelectric transducer was used to determine the amplitude and form of the acoustic wave. The production of acoustic waves by transient heating is discussed, and the theoretical form of the acoustic wave determined for various boundary and initial conditions are compared to the experimentally …

Calibration Of An X-Ray Unit As To Effective Wave-Lengths By Comparing Absorption Coefficients, Jerome James Woyci May 1950

Calibration Of An X-Ray Unit As To Effective Wave-Lengths By Comparing Absorption Coefficients, Jerome James Woyci

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this paper is to determine by the mass absorption coefficients of various substances, namely, aluminum, copper and iron, the effective wave-length of an X-ray beam which passes through particular thicknesses of the above materials. Since an X-ray tube does not emit a monochromatic wavelength but emits heterogeneous wave-lengths, we had to use a comparative method in order to obtain the desired results. It happens that the mass coefficient of absorption of carbon does not vary appreciably with an increase or decrease in wavelength, hence, we can use carbon as our standard or material to which we can …

The Construction And Use Of The Barrett Camera, Theresa Pauline Radermacher May 1947

The Construction And Use Of The Barrett Camera, Theresa Pauline Radermacher

Bachelors’ Theses

The study of the crystal structure of metals under various conditions of strain is at the present time the object of a great deal of scientific endeavor. A greater knowledge of the condition of strained crystals will be a tremendous aid in the future development of metallic construction for one can then predict the effect of any type of strain on a metal by the reaction of the individual crystals to that particular strain. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the construction and use of the Barrett camera which is used in experiments of this kind.

A Study Of Melting Points Of Various Binary And Tertiary Mixtures Of Waxes, Neil G. Goodrich Apr 1938

A Study Of Melting Points Of Various Binary And Tertiary Mixtures Of Waxes, Neil G. Goodrich

Bachelors’ Theses

The work undertaken in this thesis was done in cooperation with Joseph Sevenich and is a continuation of the work done by George Hable, Leonard Veranth and Lewis Wrangell. In this present work, the melting points of various trinary mixtures of waxes was studied, also the reliability of the method used in the determinations, and the effect of heat upon the mixtures. Graphs are used in the thesis in order to present a clearer picture of the work done and the results obtained.

A Study Of Melting Points Of Various Binary Mixtures Of Waxes, George John Hable Jun 1926

A Study Of Melting Points Of Various Binary Mixtures Of Waxes, George John Hable

Bachelors’ Theses

Waxes, chemically speaking, are a class of esters which consist of mono- or di-hidric alcohols united with the higher fatty acids. These waxes contain free fatty acids, free alcohols and hydrocarbons. A considerable quantity of free cerotic acid (C26H52O2) myricyl palmitate (C16H31O2. C31H63), and high melting point hydrocarbons are found in beeswax. The acids that occur in waxes appear to have an even number of carbon atoms. Paraffine, ceresine, and ozokerite are really not waxes at all according to the chemical conception. The latter two are esters of glycerine united with higher fatty acids.
