Taking A Deeper Look: Attributing Tonal Values Of Photolumens To Their Emulsions Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Anna M. Moore May 2026

Taking A Deeper Look: Attributing Tonal Values Of Photolumens To Their Emulsions Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Anna M. Moore

All Theses

This thesis examines whether tonal variation in photolumens made with historic silver gelatin photographic papers can be linked to differences in elemental composition. Photolumens are cameraless photographic images created by placing objects directly on light-sensitive paper and exposing them to ultraviolet light. Because expired and historic darkroom papers often produce unpredictable colors and tones, this study asks whether visually defined tonal groups also show measurable chemical differences.

Twenty historic paper samples were exposed, documented, and sorted into five tonal groups based on visible image characteristics. Each sample was then analyzed using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) …

Redesign Of X-Ray Irradiator To Expand Research Of Low-Dose X-Ray Radiation, Lauren Ulbrich May 2024

Redesign Of X-Ray Irradiator To Expand Research Of Low-Dose X-Ray Radiation, Lauren Ulbrich

All Theses

The effects of high-dose radiation are well-documented, and are understood to be harmful to the human body. On the other hand, the effects of low-dose radiation are much less understood. There is debate over whether or not there are negative, positive, or no effects at all from low-dose radiation. One of the reasons why these effects are not well known is because there aren't as many studies done on this type of radiation. It is a lot harder to classify the effects of radiation at low doses due to many external factors. However, the Clemson Medical Physics lab has been …

Prediction Of Pathogenic Mutations In Spermine/Spermidine Synthases, Shannon Bonomi May 2022

Prediction Of Pathogenic Mutations In Spermine/Spermidine Synthases, Shannon Bonomi

All Theses

As genetic technology and information become continuously more sophisticated and applied to the prevention and treatment of diseases, the need to understand the effects of genetic variants becomes an important task with regards to assessing disease risk. In the specific case of intellectual disabilities, prenatal screenings is an important diagnostic tool that prepares families and health professionals for the arrival of a child who may need immediate, specialized care. Cell Free DNA screenings are routine for determining sex and provide the opportunity to discover genetic anomalies. However, this has little value unless mutations can be recognized as pathogenic and are …

Protein Nano-Object Integrator: Generating Atomic-Style Objects For Use In Molecular Biophysics, Nicholas Smith Aug 2014

Protein Nano-Object Integrator: Generating Atomic-Style Objects For Use In Molecular Biophysics, Nicholas Smith

All Theses

As researchers obtain access to greater and greater amounts of computational power, focus has shifted towards modeling macroscopic objects while still maintaining atomic-level details. The Protein Nano-Object Integrator (ProNOI) presented here has been designed to provide a streamlined solution for creating and designing macro-scale objects with atomic-level details to be used in molecular simulations and tools. To accomplish this, two different interfaces were developed: a Protein Data Bank (PDB), PDB-focused interface for generating regularly-shaped three-dimensional atomic objects and a 2D image-based interface for tracing images with irregularly shaped objects and then extracting three-dimensional models from these images. Each interface is …

Understanding The Role Of Electrostatics On Protein-Protein Binding, Rooplekha C Mitra Aug 2010

Understanding The Role Of Electrostatics On Protein-Protein Binding, Rooplekha C Mitra

All Theses

Ionized groups carry net charge and thus play a major role in the electrostatic interactions between the ligand and receptor. So understanding the role of electrostatics on protein-protein interactions is crucial for understanding the contribution of ionizable groups to the binding. However, their ionization states depend on many factors including pH of water phase. The complexity comes from the fact that the pKa's of ionizable groups may be quite different from their standard values and even may change due to protein-protein binding. The main difficulty in modeling plausible ionization changes induced by the complex formation arises from the differences in …

Carbon Nanomaterials In Biological Systems, Sijie Lin Aug 2007

Carbon Nanomaterials In Biological Systems, Sijie Lin

All Theses

ABSTRACT

This thesis intends to present, from the biophysical viewpoint, my study on understanding carbon nanomaterials in biological and environmental systems. Carbon nanotubes and fullerenes represent a major family of carbon nanoparticles which possess distinct electrical, optical and mechanical properties. However, the major hurdle for making carbon nanomaterials bioavailable lies in their tendency toward bundling, driven by hydrophobic interaction, van der Waals force, and pi-stacking. To overcome this problem, we used non-covalent binding of zwitterionic lysophopholipids (LPL) onto the external surfaces of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). This method affords superior SWNT solubility in aqueous solution. The stability of SWNT-LPL complex …
